Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 29: Go to the county on the 29th

While waiting, Su Yuanyuan asked Hu Chunhua to take the pig’s blood back home. ”Aunt, you can make blood tofu with it.”

”Alright, I’ll do that after you and your father leave.”

After Yang Minggang finished making the makeshift sled, the three of them struggled to get the wild boar onto it.

”Chunhua, I still think you should go see the village head.”

Su Yuanyuan was indifferent, but Yang Minggang thought it was too much trouble to drag it to the county by himself.

”Alright, you call for him, it’s not appropriate for me to go at this time.”

The two of them went inside. ”Aunt, you should go back, it’s too cold outside. Can you carry the pig’s blood by yourself? Do you need my help to carry it back?”

”No need, I’ll wait for the village head to come before I leave.”

Yang Hongwen heard the knocking and then Yang Minggang’s voice, so he hurried to open the door.

”What’s going on? So late?”

”A wild boar ran into Su Yuanyuan’s yard. That girl has already killed it. I was thinking we should take it to the county now. The ox cart isn’t usable, so I just made a sled.”

”The wild boar came down from the mountain? And it went into the yard?”

”Yes, although it doesn’t seem as big as last time, it’s still about 400 pounds.”

”Alright. Let’s go now.” Yang Hongwen mainly feared trouble. If those opportunistic villagers knew about this, wouldn’t it cause chaos? It’s better to sell it, less hassle.

The two of them soon gathered at Su Yuanyuan’s home again.

”Uncle. Should I go with you?”

”If you can manage the walk and want to come along, then come along.”

Su Yuanyuan decided to go with them, or else she’d feel embarrassed. Before leaving, she gave the sheep some hay. It would have to do for now.

Seeing the young girl dressed warmly, the three of them set off, while Hu Chunhua went home.

Along the way, Su Yuanyuan tied a rope to the sled and helped pull. Although they stopped for breaks, it was still useful.

Yang Hongwen and the others were quite satisfied with this.

Honestly, being woken up for such work in the night was unwelcome.

But seeing the young girl not shy away from the task, the little resentment faded away.

The three of them arrived in the county, and Su Yuanyuan invited the two of them for fried dough sticks and tofu pudding.

”Uncles, don’t decline, I already feel very guilty.”

”Girl, you’ve been here more than once, right?” Yang Minggang joked.

Everyone else who had finished eating looked at the big wild boar on the ground.

”Yes, I’ve been here twice, and the trap and groove have already been retrieved.”

”Your aunt told me. I think your efforts were in vain; the sheep aren’t strong enough to pull this at all.”

”Uncle, I don’t have the strength either, just giving it a try. If it works, I won’t have to worry about the spring planting.”

Old Yang came daily for breakfast. The first thing he noticed was the large wild boar on the ground.

”Girl?”

”Uncle? Here for breakfast?”

”Yes, is this wild boar yours?”

”Yeah. It ran into my yard yesterday, so I took care of it.”

”Give it to me, I’ll find some people to divvy it up because some folks especially like this kind of meat.”

Su Yuanyuan looked at Yang Hongwen without responding to Old Yang’s words.

”Hmm, Old Yang, if you can handle it, that would be great.”

”Ha, I didn’t even notice it was you from behind before.

Hurry and eat, then let’s head over to my place.”

Turns out they knew each other. Su Yuanyuan felt relieved.

She felt besides her ability to curse, she could sense others’ intentions toward her.

Old Yang, the blacksmith, had no ill will toward her whatsoever.

He ate quickly. The four of them finished eating together, then they dragged the sled to Old Yang’s place.

”This wild boar isn’t as big as the last one.” Old Yang called his apprentice to gather some people.

Uncle Wu was the first to arrive.

”Uncle Wu.”

”Little girl, is this wild boar yours?”

”Yeah, it ran into my yard last night.”

”Girl, you’re quite bold to actually take action.”

”If I hadn’t struck it, I would’ve been the unfortunate one.”

Uncle Wu nodded, agreeing, ”This one’s not as large as the last one.”

Old Yang invited the three of them to sit by the iron stove in the house as their cotton shoes were wet, so they took them off to dry.

After a short while, a few more people came, and Uncle Wu wielded the knife.

Su Yuanyuan didn’t go outside to watch since she wasn’t interested in the spectacle.

However, Yang Hongwen went outside, leaving only Yang Minggang and her.

”Girl, were you scared at the time?”

”Honestly, no. I was startled awake by the sheep’s cries. I went out to hear what was happening. At first, I thought it was someone’s pig that had gotten out. Who knew it pushed the door open? That’s when I realized it was a wild boar.

I immediately ran back inside, took out the hatchet Master Yang had sold me with a steel blade tip last time.”

”You sure have guts.”

”Uncle, can I say I’m scared now?” Su Yuanyuan gave a bitter smile. If not for the electric baton, she would’ve had to run.

I wonder how much power is left in this electric baton? Most of the county doesn’t have electricity, so recharging it is troublesome, considering even if there is electricity, there might not be sockets.

I did study electrical engineering and practice it. But after all these years, I wonder if I can still manage?

Yang Minggang saw Su Yuanyuan in a daze and guessed she was frightened.

”Alright, the wild boar is dead now.”

”Yes, I know. Uncle. Next year, I’ll definitely raise the mud walls and fix the yard. If this happens a few more times, I probably wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.”

”I have the molds at my house.”

”Hmm.”

The wild boar in the yard was already dealt with. The people who came were all competent folks from the county.

”This boar is about 41 pounds of net meat. Seventy cents per pound, not easy work in the snow,” said Uncle Wu.

”Alright. I’ll take 100 pounds.”

”With so many people, taking 100 pounds for yourself isn’t very fair. Here’s what we’ll do: eight people came today, fifty pounds each. The rest goes to Old Wu and Old Yang, can’t let them work for nothing.”

”Alright then. Uncle Wu, it’s up to you. Just give me the ribs.”

”You’re sly, huh? Old Wu, divide it equally into eight shares.”

When the noise outside subsided, Yang Hongwen came in with money and handed it to Su Yuanyuan. ”Today’s rate is seventy cents a pound. Here’s 280 yuan. Take the viscera back with you.”

Uncle Wu came in, gave ten yuan to Su Yuanyuan, and said, ”Here you go, little girl, it wasn’t easy. Take the pig’s viscera back with you.”

Su Yuanyuan nodded with a smile and didn’t refuse. Still, she expressed her gratitude many times.

The three of them pulled the empty sled back home this time.

They walked back in silence, even letting Su Yuanyuan ride, wishing to pull her, but she refused.

”Uncles, please come to my house.”

”No, I’ll go back to rest.” Yang Hongwen shook his head, declining.

”Uncle, I still need to visit your house. I don’t like going to others’ homes. In this harsh winter, I don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable.”
