CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

Morning light filtered quietly into the subterranean courtyard as Orven arrived, carrying two heavy spell-scrolls encased in black iron tube containers.

Caius stood near the temple steps, rolling up his sleeves. Before Orven could speak, Caius looked past the elder mage toward the empty archway.

”Master Orven,” Caius said, his voice calm and curious. ”It has been days since I last saw Old Bones. Has he left the estate?”

Orven paused, setting the iron cases down on the stone bench. He let out a low, dry chuckle. ”Ah, the old assassin. Yes, he departed a few days ago. Whatever business he has, only he and the Patriarch know the details. He merely mentioned he would be back in no more than three months, right on schedule.”

”I see,” Caius replied, keeping his expression neutral as he nodded.

”Whatever secret errand those two are plotting, do not let it distract you,” Orven said smoothly, uncapping the first iron container. ”We have work to do. The Patriarch ordered me to teach you the forbidden arts reserved exclusively for the inner sanctum of House Vel’drin.”

Orven pulled out a dark parchment scroll etched with glowing, deep-violet runes that seemed to writhe like living threads across the page.

”Until now, you have learned how to move through space—using Void-Stride and shadow-stepping,” Orven explained, his tone shifting into absolute severity. ”The inner sanctum techniques deal with the exact opposite: Spatial Locking.”

He unrolled the scroll onto the stone bench.

”Spatial Locking is the art of completely freezing a localized coordinate in physical reality,” Orven continued, pointing to a central, complex rune diagram. ”When you deploy a Spatial Lock, you do not merely erect a wall of mana. You bind the fabric of space itself. Anyone trapped inside cannot teleport, cannot phase through shadows, and cannot use spatial acceleration. Their movement is anchored to the physical world, rendering all spatial escape methods utterly useless.”

Caius stepped closer, his pale eyes instantly absorbing the complex geometric patterns on the parchment.

”To master this,” Orven said, raising his hand, ”you must learn to weave your mana into microscopic spatial nails—anchoring the three pillars of Density, Distortion, and Inversion simultaneously into a single point in space.”

Orven snapped his fingers. Instantly, a ten-foot sphere around Caius snapped shut with a subtle, resonant thump. The ambient air turned extraordinarily dense, and when Caius tried to extend a thread of dark mana into the shadow beneath his boots, the shadow refused to yield—frozen solid like sheet metal.

”This is Domain-Seal: Initial Lock,” Orven commanded, his eyes glowing with violet power. ”Break out of it, Caius—or spend the rest of the day trapped in place.”

Caius didn’t panic. Looking at the invisible lattice of spatial pressure pinning his limbs, a cold, familiar understanding washed over him.

This... is the exact same underlying concept.

Months ago, Caius had independently developed his own thread-based binding art derived from the Arachne. By manifesting physical black mana threads through his Eye of the Loom, he could anchor them into the surrounding atmosphere—using them to slow enemies, hold them in place, or snap the threads to slice through targets with terrifying destructive force.

Old Bones, with his sharp assassin instincts, had caught a glimpse of the technique during an early spar and had relentlessly pressed Caius to teach him the secret. Caius had agreed, but he was far too cautious to hand over his true power. He carefully crafted a modified, diluted version on paper—stripping away every single trace or mention of his Crown Core, which remained his absolute bloodline secret.

Caius had framed the skill to Old Bones as a crude thread-manipulation trick powered purely by standard, raw mana core energy. He altered the core pathways, forcing the technique to rely on manual spatial pressure rather than the liquid obsidian mana of the Crown Core.

Even that diluted ”bullshit version” had thoroughly stunned Old Bones. The legendary assassin had spent weeks studying Caius’s hand-drawn diagrams, dissecting the raw mana flow until he successfully learned it himself. However, without the Crown Core’s liquid obsidian energy to empower the threads, Old Bones’s version was strictly limited to slowing down and trapping targets in physical space—completely lacking the brutal, tissue-shredding destructive properties Caius commanded.

Now, looking at Orven’s grand inner-sanctum spatial lock, Caius realized the elder mage was simply using complex runes to achieve the exact same anchoring effect he had already been weaving by hand—and had already passed down to Old Bones in a diluted form.

Caius smiled thinly. His Eye of the Loom flared to life with pale, piercing intensity.

He didn’t struggle against the spatial density. Instead, he extended five slender, pitch-black threads from his fingertips—a seamless blend of his Arachne thread art and Orven’s spatial lock theory. Without needing a single rune chant, Caius drove those five black threads directly into the structural nodes of Orven’s domain seal.

Snap. Snap. Snap.

The microscopic spatial nails holding Orven’s barrier in place were instantly intercepted, re-bound, and inverted by Caius’s threads. The ten-foot sphere of frozen space collapsed into nothingness in less than two seconds.

Caius didn’t stop there. With a flick of his wrist, he redirected those same five black threads outward. They latched onto the spatial coordinates surrounding Orven, weaving a flawless, razor-sharp Spatial Lock around the elder mage himself.

The ambient air around Orven froze instantly.

Orven stood paralyzed in the center of the yard. His jaw slackened, his eyes bulging as he felt his physical body locked in place, unable to twitch a finger, channel a shadow-stride, or summon a single spatial rune.

Orven’s mind went completely, utterly numb. His raspy throat worked silently, but no sound came out. He stared at the fourteen-year-old boy in front of him, entirely mute, his brain refusing to process what he had just witnessed.

Caius gently twitched his fingers, snapping the black threads back into his skin. The suffocating pressure binding Orven vanished, allowing the elder mage to gasp violently for air as his boots hit the stone floor.

Orven swallowed hard, his throat working as he stared at Caius with wide, bloodshot eyes.

”What... what in the three realms was that?” Orven rasped, his voice trembling slightly as he rubbed his wrists. ”You didn’t cast a single rune. You didn’t even use a sanctum formula!”

”I merely applied the logic from the scroll to an existing thread framework I developed,” Caius replied smoothly, keeping his posture calm and respectful. ”It seemed faster to anchor space directly rather than drawing the full matrix.”

Orven stared at him in utter disbelief, pointing a shaking finger at the boy. ”Faster?! You just re-bound an inner-sanctum domain seal in two seconds flat! Where did you even learn the foundation for spatial thread-anchoring?!”

”Old Bones and I experimented with some crude version months ago,” Caius said, tossing out the half-truth with a straight face. ”I gave him the general concept of raw-mana thread binding back then. He learned to use it to slow down targets, but today, your scroll provided the missing piece to make it freeze space entirely.”

Orven froze, his breath catching in his chest as his mind frantically pieced the information together.

”Wait... you mean Old Bones’s strange new shadow-trap trick... that was your diluted theory?” Orven whispered, his face turning pale. He slowly shook his head, letting out a dry, breathy laugh of pure absurdity. ”By the ancestors... the old assassin thought he picked up a secret technique, and it was just your rough draft.”

Orven looked down at the dark parchment scroll in his hand, then back up at Caius, his expression a mix of awe and deep exhaustion.

”I came here to teach you the basics over the next three months,” Orven said quietly, rolling the scroll back up. ”Instead, I think you just turned our inner-sanctum forbidden art into a toy.”
