CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The subterranean training chamber of House Vel’drin had never opened its doors to an outsider. Hidden deep within the clan’s core territory, the vast basalt hall was reserved exclusively for the elite warriors of the house. Its stone walls had witnessed generations of dark elves learning the brutal arts of war, and its floor bore the deep scars of countless training bouts. No servant, noble visitor, or foreign warrior was ever permitted inside while the clan’s elite were training.

That ancient rule had not changed. Only now, a fourteen-year-old human stood in the center of the chamber.

Caius held a wooden training sword in both hands, his boots planted firmly against the cold stone. Across from him stood one of House Vel’drin’s elite guards, wearing light leather armor and holding an identical wooden weapon.

At the edge of the chamber, Old Bones stood leaning against a stone pillar, watching with his arms folded across his chest. He had been given total authority over Caius’s daily regimen. Every day, a different elite guard would step forward to face the boy. Each warrior possessed a distinct style, unique instincts, and decades of combat experience that Caius would be forced to overcome.

During a brief pause between rotations, Caius wiped sweat from his brow and looked toward the line of fifty elite guards waiting along the wall. A question that had lingered in his mind since entering the Underdark finally pressed to the surface.

”Old Bones,” Caius said quietly, keeping his voice low. ”Dark elves possess the gift of natural longevity, right? Sereth told me he is over three hundred years old. But when we arrived at the palace, more than half the warriors here did not even recognize him. Most of the dark elves in this clan look strikingly young. Why are there so few who live past three centuries?”

Old Bones let out a low, raspy chuckle, shaking his head slowly. ”The Underdark is a meat grinder, kid. Living long is a gift of our bloodline, but surviving long enough to enjoy it is a completely different matter.”

The old assassin motioned toward the grand cavern beyond the walls. ”It is not just the constant, grinding resource wars against the Arachne in the lower abyssal depths. It is the dark elves themselves. Our society is built on deadly games, house purges, assassination contracts, shadow feuds, and constant betrayals. Most of our kin never get the chance to die of old age.”

Old Bones glanced up at the high ceiling. ”Look at the High Elves on the surface. They live peaceful, sheltered lives in their ancient forests. They rarely wage war, and they refuse to meddle in the chaotic, bloody conflicts of men. That is why surface elves live out their full, natural centuries. But down here? Reaching three hundred years does not mean you are blessed. It means you are a lethal monster who has walked over a mountain of corpses.”

Caius absorbed the words, his gaze shifting back to the young, sharp faces of the guards lining the arena. The lesson was clear: survival in this realm was an anomaly, not a right.

Old Bones pushed off from the pillar and stepped into the center of the floor. When he had first emerged from his long retirement alongside the Patriarch, more than half of these Fifty Blades had not even recognized him. To this younger generation, born long after his legendary exploits had faded into quiet obscurity, he had looked like nothing more than an ancient, decrepit veteran in ragged clothes. But as his yellowed eyes swept across the line of warriors, the sheer, suffocating pressure of his presence made every guard stiffen.

Every single warrior in the hall heard the hard truth that fell from Old Bones’s lips.

”You will not treat this boy gently,” Old Bones commanded, his raspy voice cutting through the silent hall like a blade. ”If you hold back because he is human, you are wasting his time. And if you fail to take this training seriously, Caius will fail the Trial of Fate.”

His tone hardened into solid iron. ”If he fails, he dies. And when your young lord walks into that arena two years from now, there will be no wooden swords waiting for him. The executioner will be waiting.”

The guards remained motionless, listening to every brutal word.

”Sereth’s execution was delayed because of this trial, nothing more,” Old Bones continued coldly. ”Under our laws, his judgment has only been postponed. If Caius wins the Trial of Fate, Sereth goes free. But if Caius dies in that ring, the trial ends, and Sereth faces the executioner’s blade.”

Old Bones paused, letting his sharp, lethal glare bore into every guard along the wall.

”Do not fool yourselves into thinking you are merely doing this boy a favor,” Old Bones added, his voice dropping an octave into an absolute warning. ”Let this human kid be your whetstone as well. Sharpen your own blunt edges against his impossible growth. Because if you slacken, if you cling to your centuries of dark elf arrogance and treat him like a lesser creature, I promise you this: in less than a year, this fourteen-year-old child will beat every single one of you to a pulp.”

A heavy, suffocating silence blanketed the training hall. The Fifty Blades stood frozen, processing the harsh reality of his words. Lips thinned, knuckles whitened around wooden hilts, and several veteran dark elves narrowed their eyes in cold, burning disbelief. The ancient master whom they had initially failed to recognize had just laid bare their lord’s mortality, and challenged their very pride as warriors.

Old Bones raised his hand, completely indifferent to their rising indignation. ”Begin.”

The first few days went almost exactly as the guards had expected. They defeated Caius decisively.

The first warrior overwhelmed him with sheer, crushing pressure, forcing him backward until his foot slipped on the smooth stone. The second exploited Caius’s habit of tracking the opponent’s blade rather than their body. The third used blazing speed to strike from awkward angles Caius struggled to read.

Each defeat exposed another flaw. Each guard expected the next day’s match to be an easy victory.

Instead, Caius adapted.

By the fourth day, one of the elite guards found himself completely unable to force the boy backward. Caius had begun recognizing the subtle rhythm of dark elf footwork. When the warrior increased his pressure, Caius stopped meeting strength with strength, yielding just enough to slip the blow. When the guard changed his angle, Caius shifted his balance before the weapon even arrived.

The spar lasted far longer than anticipated. The dark elf eventually won, but when he stepped away, his face was pale with exertion. He had not expected a human child to make him fight for every inch of stone.

On the fifth day, the first unexpected victory occurred.

An elite warrior drove a high cut toward Caius’s neck. Caius blocked, absorbed the impact, and stepped backward. The dark elf immediately shifted his grip to deliver a follow-up strike, but Caius saw the opening before the blade even moved.

Invoking his internal sight, Caius stepped straight inside the warrior’s guard. His wooden blade came to a firm halt directly against the dark elf’s chest plate.

The training chamber fell dead silent.

The guard looked down at the wooden sword resting over his heart. For several long seconds, he did not move. Then he slowly raised his eyes to meet Caius’s gaze.

Caius lowered his weapon and stepped back.

The warrior had lost. Not because Caius possessed greater physical strength, but because the boy had anticipated the movement and reached the target first.

”Again,” the guard demanded through gritted teeth.

Caius raised his sword without a word. The second match lasted twice as long, and though the dark elf eventually claimed victory, it was a hard-fought struggle.

By the end of the first week, the entire dynamic inside the training chamber had transformed. Old Bones’s warning no longer sounded like crazy exaggeration. The guards stopped treating Caius as a child they had been ordered to tutor, and they began treating him as an active, dangerous threat.

They began discussing his rapid growth among themselves during rest periods.

”He is improving too fast,” one guard muttered, watching Caius stretch his shoulders. ”He watched your stance transitions once on Tuesday, and by Thursday he was using it against me.”

”He did not just copy it,” another veteran replied grimly. ”He understood the mechanics behind it.”

Pride entered the training floor. Losing a spar to a fellow dark elf was acceptable, but losing to a fourteen-year-old human was a stain no elite warrior of Vel’drin could tolerate. Remembering Old Bones’s taunt that the human would beat them to a pulp in less than a year, the guards began stepping into the arena with dark, absolute determination in their eyes.

Caius raised his wooden sword, his Black Core pulsing steadily in his chest as he met the glare of the next master warrior.

Old Bones watched from the sidelines, a faint, razor-thin smile touching his weathered face. The condescension was gone. The guards were no longer holding back, and now, the true training could finally begin.
