CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The morning air in the training yard felt heavy, damp with the quiet chill of the deep caverns.

Orven stood in the center of the yard, his dark robes falling perfectly straight, his pale eyes fixed on Caius. A short distance away, the captive Arachne warrior remained crouched near the cavern wall, its multiple eyes darting between the two figures before settling back into a wary, motionless watch.

”You spent the night with the mantra,” Orven said, his voice as neutral and flat as the surrounding stone. ”Show me what you aligned with.”

Caius did not answer with words. He adjusted his posture, taking a slow, controlled breath, and reached inward to awaken his newly transformed Black Core.

Instead of the gentle, fluid mist of dark mana Orven expected from a novice, the ambient air within the training hall violently dropped several degrees.

The light illuminating the stone floor dimed dramatically, drawn inward toward Caius’s chest as if sucked down a drain. A subtle, high-pitched hum vibrated through the foundation of the room—not a sound, but a physical frequency that made the stone beneath their feet shudder.

Orven’s eyes widened slightly. His calm demeanor faltered for the briefest fraction of a second.

Caius raised his right hand, extending his fingers.

From his palm, a tendril of dark mana seeped outward. But it did not billow like smoke, nor did it flow like water. It condensed instantly into a thick, jet-black liquid that solidified in midair, forming a narrow, three-foot spike of pure shadow construct.

It was impossibly dark—an obsidian needle that swallowed the torchlight around it entirely.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

”That density...” Orven murmured, taking half a step backward. His hand instinctively hovered near the hidden mana runes inside his sleeve.

He wasn’t looking at a novice’s shadow spell; he was looking at an absolute anomaly. The construct didn’t possess the unstable, shifting structure of ordinary shadow magic. It looked forged, heavy, and dense enough to puncture heavy armor with zero resistance.

”Throw it,” Orven commanded, his voice dropping into a sharp, clinical edge. He raised his left hand, weaving a defensive barrier of shimmering blue-grey spatial mana to form a thick, layered shield in front of his chest. ”Strike my barrier with full force.”

Caius flicked his wrist.

The obsidian spike shot forward, leaving a black streak in the air that seemed to cut through space itself rather than simply travel through it.

The instant the construct struck Orven’s defensive barrier, there was no loud impact, no explosion of shattered energy.

Instead, a horrific screech rang out as the razor-sharp intent embedded within Caius’s core mana made contact with the mage’s spell pathways. The obsidian spike didn’t just hit the barrier—it sliced straight through the spatial weave like a hot blade through silk, while its corrosive erosion intent began devouring the surrounding blue-grey mana on contact.

The barrier collapsed into useless sparks.

Orven flinched, stepping sharply to the side as the black needle buried itself three inches deep into the solid granite wall behind him, where it remained pinned—solid, unyielding, and completely motionless.

Orven stared at the wall, then slowly turned his head back to Caius.

For a moment, the elder mage felt a phantom pain slice across his own inner mana pathways, a subtle spiritual ache echoing from the terrifying sharpness of the core that had produced such a spell. It was an energy so sharp, so impossibly compressed, that merely observing its full release felt like standing too close to a spinning blade.

”That was not standard shadow manipulation,” Orven said, his voice tight, his usual detachment completely shattered. He stared at the fourteen-year-old boy sitting calmly before him. ”What did you do to your core overnight?”

Caius simply met his gaze, his expression unreadable as the obsidian spike in the wall dissolved back into harmless shadow.

”I followed the mantra, Elder,” Caius replied softly. ”Just as you taught me.”

Orven remained silent, looking from Caius to the mark on the granite wall, realizing with a growing chill that the Patriarch had not sent him to teach a pupil with a ”tiny affinity”—he had sent him to feed a monster.
