CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The Patriarch stood before the closed fifty-foot gates of the Moon Palace, his gaze shifting back to the five hundred clan veterans standing in silent formation behind him. His expression remained composed, but the cold intensity in his blood-red eyes left no room for doubt.

”Only two Elders will accompany me inside,” the Patriarch commanded smoothly. Two of the ancient dark elves stepped forward without a word. He then turned to the remaining four hundred and ninety warriors filling the thoroughfare. ”The rest of you will hold this line.”

His voice lowered, carrying a frigid edge that echoed off the stone walls and reached the ears of the guarding Shadowblades. ”If anything happens to Sereth, or if they attempt to detain any of us within those walls, tear the palace down.”

The command hung heavy in the static air. Even the two hundred Palace Shadowblades blocking the avenue visibly stiffened, their knuckles tightening on their hilt guards. The order was an explicit act of high treason against the Dual Sovereigns. The Moon Palace was the supreme seat of subterranean authority, commanding the realm’s executioners, spies, and shadow legions. To command an open assault upon its gates was unthinkable, yet the Patriarch had uttered it without a second of hesitation.

None of the palace guards dared to challenge him.

With a deep, resonant groan of grinding iron, the massive gates parted. Caius crossed the threshold alongside the Patriarch, the two chosen Elders, and Old Bones, leaving an army stationed like a loaded siege engine at the threshold.

The moment they passed into the interior, the sheer scale of the palace took Caius’s breath away. Built within a gargantuan cavern far larger than any district in Vel’drin territory, the palace comprised towering basalt spires, arching bridges, and hanging aqueducts carved directly from the ceiling. Above, massive silver lunar crystals cast a cold, spectral light across the central amphitheater.

Hundreds of dark elves filled the terraced galleries. Representatives of the Great Houses, battle-tested warlords, high mages, and elite assassins looked down from their perches, eager to witness the trial.

High above the floor, situated upon a grand throne balcony cut into the cliff face, sat the Dual Sovereigns.

The Absolute Sun occupied a throne bathed in golden light, her radiant aura casting an intimidating pressure across the entire cavern. Beside her sat the Absolute Moon, enveloped in a devouring shadow that absorbed the surrounding light. Her face remained hidden behind a veil, leaving only her piercing, luminescent eyes visible. As Caius stepped into the center of the court, those silver eyes locked onto him, making his skin prickle as though she were scanning his very soul.

At the center of the stone arena stood Sereth.

Heavy suppression chains wrapped around his arms, torso, and legs, every link glowing with faint violet runes that crushed his dark blue core into complete dormancy. Despite the spiritual binding, Sereth stood tall and unbent. He turned his head slightly, his eyes meeting Caius’s across the stone floor. Neither spoke, but the unspoken recognition was instant.

Caius instinctively took a step toward him, but the Patriarch laid a steady, firm hand on his shoulder. ”Wait,” the old dark elf whispered quietly.

A tall figure stepped to the edge of the high tribunal platform overlooking the floor: the Judge of the Moon Court. He raised a carved bone staff, demanding complete silence.

”Sereth of House Vel’drin,” the Judge proclaimed, his voice amplified by spatial magic to fill every corner of the vast cavern. ”Fourteen years ago, you were dispatched on a covert contract to eliminate Cullum Macrae. You failed.”

Sereth remained silent, his expression unreadable.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

”You did not return to account for your failure,” the Judge continued coldly. ”You remained within human territory for over a decade without permission from the council. And now you return to the Underdark carrying the son of the very target you were ordered to slay.”

An angry wave of murmurs rippled through the upper galleries.

”The Macrae bloodline has spilled the blood of our kin for generations!” a noble from a rival clan shouted, rising to his feet.

”Cullum Macrae slaughtered our scouts!” another added fiercely. ”He was an enemy to the realm, and his offspring carries that same wretched blood!”

The accusations grew increasingly chaotic as representatives shouted down from the balconies. Caius tightened his hands into fists, wanting nothing more than to defend his father’s memory, but the Patriarch stepped forward into the crystal light.

”Caius Macrae does not stand here as an enemy,” the Patriarch stated, his voice easily cutting through the noise. ”He enters this court as a recognized ward of House Vel’drin.”

Outraged protests erupted immediately.

”The boy is a human!”

”He has zero standing in the Court of the Moon!”

”Why should the spawn of Cullum Macrae enjoy the protection of a Great House?”

The Patriarch remained unmoving as stone. ”He resides under our house flag. The law is absolute.”

One of the Elders beside him stepped forward, adding coldly, ”Under the foundational accords of our ancestors, harming a ward of Vel’drin is a direct declaration of war against our entire clan.”

The Judge struck the floor with his staff, generating a pulse of force that hushed the gallery. He turned his stern gaze back to the prisoner. ”Explain yourself, Sereth.”

”I have already submitted my report,” Sereth replied plainly.

”Then explain why you accepted the son of your target as your ward,” the Judge demanded.

Sereth fell silent, his jaw set. Caius knew the truth behind that silence. He knew about the deathbed oath, about his father’s final request, and the honor Sereth refused to abandon.

Caius stepped past the Patriarch. ”I can explain it.”

Before the words fully left his mouth, an invisible, crushing force clamped down around his throat, completely sealing his vocal cords. Silence magic.

The Judge did not even glance at him. ”Only those recognized by this tribunal may speak.”

Caius grit his teeth, the pressure on his windpipe threatening to suffocate him. He looked toward Sereth, who gave a subtle, warning shake of his head: Do not interfere.

”Sereth of House Vel’drin,” the Judge pressed on, the chains around the prisoner rattling as the suppression runes flared brightly. ”You abandoned your mission, lived among surface dwellers, and adopted the son of an enemy. State your reason.”

Sereth raised his chin, his dark eyes locking onto the Judge. ”Because I gave my word.”

A heavy silence blanketed the arena.

”Your word?” the Judge repeated.

”To Cullum Macrae,” Sereth answered steadily.

Several noble representatives let out bitter, contemptuous scoffs, but the Judge did not laugh. ”You prioritized a personal promise to a surface warrior over the absolute directive of your house.”

”I fulfilled the debt I owed,” Sereth replied quietly.

The Judge turned toward the Patriarch. ”And House Vel’drin recognizes this foolishness?”

”We do,” the Patriarch replied without hesitation.

Another wave of frantic whispering swept through the high galleries. Caius surveyed the hostile court, taking in the blood-feud clans, the glares of the noble lords, and the silent Palace Shadowblades ringing the floor. Above it all sat the Dual Sovereigns, observing the proceedings like distant deities.

Caius realized that mere words or clan politics would never be enough to save Sereth from execution.

He remembered a quiet, late-night lesson during their long trek down into the subterranean abyss. Sereth had once offhandedly spoken of an ancient, forgotten tradition known as the Trial of Fate. It was an archaic clause in dark elf law, a microscopic glimmer of hope that could bypass house standing and force the High Tribunal to hear a challenge. Sereth had called it a desperate gamble, warning him that no human in recorded history had ever dared invoke it, nor was there any guarantee the court would even entertain an outsider’s claim. Yet it remained the only legal weapon capable of halting an immediate execution.

Bolstered by the ancient knowledge awakened within his Crown Core, Caius seized that single thread of possibility.

Focusing his internal mana inward, Caius called upon his Crown Core. A surge of pure intent flared within his upper core, radiating outward to shatter the silence spell clamped around his throat like brittle glass.

Taking a deep, sharp breath, Caius stepped into the center of the ring, his voice echoing across the entire cavern like a ringing bell.

”I invoke the Trial of Fate!”

The entire Court of the Moon froze in sheer shock, the ancient words ringing off the basalt walls as dark elf nobility, executioners, and sovereigns alike stared down at the fourteen-year-old human who had just challenged the law of the Underdark.
