CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The Judge slammed the base of his iron-bound staff onto the stone floor, the resonant shockwave echoing off the basalt arches and forcing the roaring gallery into a tense, icy silence. The central amphitheater of the Moon Palace seemed to drop several degrees as every dark elf gaze turned downward, converging upon the solitary human boy standing in the center of the arena floor.

Above the arena, perched upon high thrones carved directly into the cliff face, sat the two supreme rulers of the Underdark. The Absolute Sun sat upon her seat of radiant gold, her body emitting a shimmering brilliance that cut through the cavern’s violet shadows. Beside her sat the Absolute Moon, enveloped in dark, light-devouring silver silk, her expression veiled and completely unreadable as she looked down at the proceedings.

Caius had never imagined standing beneath the judgment of the two ultimate rulers of the dark elf realm. Yet he stood his ground, his upper core still humming with lingering mana from shattering the silence spell.

The Judge’s solemn voice cut across the silence. ”The human child has invoked the Trial of Fate.”

Instantly, several noble lords in the upper galleries rose in furious protest, their silk robes rustling sharply.

”This is an absurd desecration!” a representative from a blood-feud clan spat, pointing a trembling finger down at Caius. ”He is fourteen winters old!”

”He is a human surface-dweller!” another shouted. ”He possesses zero standing, zero right, and zero privilege within this sacred tribunal!”

”His bloodline is stained with the deaths of our kin!” a third noble chimed in. ”House Vel’drin cannot weaponize ancient legal technicalities to shield a target from execution forever!”

The wave of outrage cascaded down the stone amphitheater. Some representatives demanded that the ancient law be dismissed outright on account of the boy’s age, while others argued that accepting a human’s challenge would set a disastrous legal precedent across the Underdark.

Through the tempest of angry shouts, the Patriarch of House Vel’drin stood motionless, flanked by his two Elders. They did not utter a single word to defend Caius. They did not need to. Behind the heavy iron gates of the palace, five hundred war-ready Vel’drin veterans waited in silent formation, prepared to turn the highway into a slaughterhouse if the tribunal attempted an extrajudicial execution.

The Judge struck the stone floor once more with his staff, the resonant boom rattling the stone benches and driving the shouting nobles back into quiet fury.

”Enough!” the Judge thundered. He turned his eyes upward toward the high balconies. ”Under the foundational charters of the Trial of Fate, this court may recognize the challenge only if the Dual Sovereigns and the seated council permit it.”

His sharp gaze swept across the gallery of Great Houses and warlords. ”Therefore, the tribunal shall hold a vote.”

A low murmur rippled through the spectators.

”The representatives of the Great Houses shall cast their judgment,” the Judge declared. ”The Elders of the high clans shall cast theirs. The outcome of this vote shall determine if the Trial of Fate may officially proceed.”

Caius remained still, his fists clenched at his sides. He had half-expected the court to strike him down or laugh him off the arena floor. Instead, they were legally backed into a corner, forced to debate the challenge.

”If the majority accepts the challenge, the trial shall be recognized under ancient precedent,” the Judge continued, his eyes narrowing. ”If the majority rejects it, the challenge is nullified instantly.”

A representative of a blood-feud house stood immediately, his voice cold and cutting. ”I reject it.”

A second noble stood beside him. ”As do I. A human child has no right to cross blades with a master Shadowblade.”

Arguments broke out across the tiers. Some houses wanted Caius executed immediately to wipe out Cullum Macrae’s bloodline once and for all. Others argued that executing a recognized ward of Vel’drin without proper trial could trigger a catastrophic civil war with the Vel’drin army waiting outside the gates.

Then, a raspy voice spoke from the upper shadows of an ancient clan balcony. ”The ancient text of the law does not state that the challenger must be of dark elf blood.”

A younger noble turned sharply toward the shadowed balcony. ”The law was written by dark elves, for dark elves!”

”The law was written before your house even existed,” the elder replied coldly, his eyes gleaming beneath a dark cowl. ”You cannot dismantle sacred, unyielding law simply because the challenger is inconvenient to your politics.”

The fierce debate raged across the high gallery. Caius listened in silence, feeling the heavy gaze of Sereth upon his back. Bound in suppression-rune chains at the center of the ring, Sereth watched him with dark, unreadable eyes.

For the first time, Caius fully grasped the sheer magnitude of what he had done. This was no longer just about saving Sereth from an executioner’s block. It was about House Vel’drin’s honor, the lingering legacy of his father’s name, and the mysterious Crown Core bloodline humming beneath his skin.

The shouting reached a fever pitch until a single word cut through the vast cavern.

”Enough.”

The word was spoken softly, almost as a whisper, yet it possessed a crushing, suffocating authority that instantly smothered every voice in the arena. Atmospheric pressure spiked. Nobles froze mid-sentence, lower-house representatives bowed their heads, and even the guarding Shadowblades stood at absolute attention.

Caius looked upward toward the cliffside throne.

The Absolute Moon had spoken.

She leaned forward slightly from her seat of silver darkness, her veiled face turning down toward the fourteen-year-old human boy standing alone beneath the grand tribunal. For several long, agonizing seconds, no one dared to breathe.

Sereth remained motionless in his chains. The Patriarch of House Vel’drin stood like carved stone. Beside the Moon, the Absolute Sun remained radiant and silent, observing the scene.

The Absolute Moon finally looked toward the Judge.

”Proceed.”

The Judge bowed his head deeply. ”As you command, Sovereign.”

Caius tightened his hands, taking a slow, steady breath as the formal voting mechanism began. The verdict of the Court of the Moon was about to decide his life, Sereth’s freedom, and the fate of the Macrae bloodline.
