CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The morning sparring ended near midday.

Caius stood at the edge of the subterranean training grounds, breathing heavily as he leaned both hands against his wooden sword. Sweat dripped from his chin, soaking the collar of his training clothes. Across from him, the elite guard lowered his weapon, his chest heaving with exertion. Neither had spoken during the final exchange, but the dark elf’s eyes burned with silent shock. He had expected to overwhelm the human child; instead, Caius had pushed him to the brink of defeat.

Old Bones watched from the shadow of a stone pillar, his arms folded across his chest. ”Enough for today,” the old master grunted.

The guard bowed formally toward Caius before stepping back into the ranks of the Fifty Blades. Caius returned the gesture, his muscles throbbing with deep exhaustion. Every passing day brought fiercer resistance from the guards, but martial drills were only half of Caius’s design.

He had two years, and he intended to weaponize every single day.

After washing the sweat and grime from his skin, Caius dressed in clean clothes and navigated the dark, cavernous thoroughfares deeper into Vel’drin territory. He reached the grand clan library, a massive chamber carved directly into the heart of the basalt mountain, its towering shelves vanishing into the upper darkness. Thousands of ancient manuscripts, parchment scrolls, and leather-bound codices rested in silent rows.

Caius approached the stone desk where the library steward sat reviewing a ledger. The older elf looked up, his crimson eyes sharp and evaluating. ”Can I help you, human?”

”I need a child’s primer,” Caius said plainly. ”Something to teach me your language, reading, writing, and speech in the Nyx’ari tongue.”

The steward stilled, his hand pausing over the ledger. He looked at Caius with a flicker of genuine surprise, clearly unaccustomed to hearing a surface human use the proper name of his people rather than the crude labels forced upon them by outsiders.

”You know our true name,” the steward noted softly.

”Master Sereth mentioned it when we traveled to the Nyx’ari realm,” Caius replied, meeting the elder’s gaze directly. ”He shared only a small amount of knowledge with me, but I desire to learn about your culture and the history archived in your library.”

The steward studied Caius for a long moment. The usual disdain in his eyes gave way to a quiet, solemn respect. A human boy who not only respected their heritage, but actively sought to understand their history and language, was an anomaly within these stone halls.

”Master Sereth taught you well,” the steward said, closing his ledger. He turned toward a young archivist sorting scrolls nearby. ”You. Come here.”

The young scholar approached and bowed deeply. ”Steward?”

”Teach this boy our fundamentals,” the steward commanded. ”Start with the primer, then grant him access to our historical texts as he progresses.”

The young archivist hesitated, casting a nervous glance past Caius. A few paces behind the boy, Old Bones had slouched into a corner, sitting against the cold stone with his eyes closed. To an untrained observer, the old assassin appeared fast asleep, but the subtle, rhythmic pulse of his presence warned everyone in the room that he remained fully aware.

”At once, Steward,” the young archivist replied, pulling a thin, worn volume from a lower shelf and motioning Caius toward a reading table.

They sat across from one another, opening the primer. ”We begin with the glyphs,” the archivist said, pointing to the first character. ”Our script is structural. Each symbol represents both a sound and a concept.”

What followed was a quiet display of terrifyingly rapid mental consumption.

As a student of the threads, Caius possessed a unique way of perceiving structure, tension, and flow. Where an ordinary scholar saw static ink strokes on parchment, Caius saw interlinked strands of intent and energy. The complex, sweeping lines of the Nyx’ari script resembled the delicate geometry of woven threads. His mind—already tuned to isolate, track, and manipulate spatial patterns—treated the written language like an intricate tapestry waiting to be unraveled.

Utilizing his Crown Core alongside his instinct as a thread-weaver, Caius cataloged every glyph, phoneme, and structural rule directly into his consciousness. He did not merely memorize characters; he mapped their tension, their root connections, and how each subtle stroke pulled the meaning of a sentence in a new direction. While his physical body sat at the table, his upper core archived these linguistic strands into a vast, organized vault.

By the third day, Caius had completely bypassed basic primers. He was no longer reading simple texts; he turned his ravenous attention to the deepest vaults of the library—a treasury of intelligence far greater than Caius had anticipated.

Because House Vel’drin operated as the premier scouts, pathfinders, and assassins of the Underdark, their warriors frequently offered their lethal services as mercenaries across both realms. For millennia, whenever Vel’drin blades returned from contracts on the surface, every road mapped, fortress scouted, troop movement observed, and kingdom fallen was meticulously reported and archived. The clan’s records held not only the brutal history of the Nyx’ari, but an astonishingly detailed chronicle of the surface world—from ancient human empires that had crumbled into dust to the modern military doctrines of rival surface kingdoms.

Caius devoured these reports with frightening intensity. He analyzed campaign maps, tactics, and battle formations, dissecting how ancient kingdoms rose through decisive chokepoint defenses and resource domination, and how they shattered due to internal feuds, economic starvation, and sudden surface invasions.

To Caius, a battlefield was simply a larger, deadlier web of threads. Troop movements were strands of momentum; defensive phalanxes were knots of tension; flank maneuvers were sudden cuts through an enemy’s line. Through the power of his Crown Core, he didn’t just read the reports of past Vel’drin scouts—he reconstructed the battles inside his mind, simulating vanguard charges, subterranean ambushes, and surface sieges.

The young archivist watched in stunned disbelief as the fourteen-year-old human stacked centuries of cross-realm intelligence on his reading table, turning pages with methodical, unbroken rhythm.

”You are reading confidential scout debriefs from surface wars three centuries ago,” the young archivist whispered, looking at a dense folio detailing a human kingdom’s collapse. ”Most scholars spend decades analyzing these records.”

”A sword only cuts what is in front of it,” Caius replied, his eyes never leaving a scout’s map of a fallen surface fortress. ”Strategy decides who gets to survive the battle before it even begins. History—whether surface or Underdark—is just a blueprint of mistakes to avoid.”

Over the next week, Caius absorbed every major war recorded in the archives, mastering conversational nuances, military jargon, and high-court terminology, speaking exclusively in the native tongue of his hosts.

At the end of another long afternoon, Caius closed a thick chronicle on mercenary deployment strategies and stood, gathering his notes.

In the corner, Old Bones had not moved a muscle all day. His breathing remained slow, his eyes closed in apparent slumber. But as Caius stepped past him toward the archive exit, a low voice drifted from the old assassin’s lips.

”Your syntax in that last passage was slightly too formal for street talk, but your grasp of battle lines is terrifyingly sharp.”

Caius stopped, a faint smile touching his lips. ”You were listening the entire time?”

Old Bones grunted quietly, not bothering to open his eyes. ”I hear everything, kid. Now go get some sleep. Tomorrow, the Fifty Blades won’t be using soft wood, and they won’t fight you like a book.”

Caius nodded, stepping out into the torchlit corridor. Behind him, the young archivist watched the boy’s receding shadow with a quiet chill. Caius was no longer just learning how to fight the Nyx’ari; he was mastering their language, studying the rise and fall of surface and subterranean empires alike, and mapping the very geometry of war. And when a human began to weave the threads of global military history, he ceased to be prey altogether.
