CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

Dawn broke cold over the Black Granite Citadel, casting long obsidian shadows across the grand council chamber.

At the center of the hall sat a massive, circular table carved from a single slab of dark basalt, inlaid with shimmering silver veins that mapped the rivers and mountain passes of the Shattered Steppes. At the head sat Caius, clad in immaculate black robes trimmed with silver thread. Resting quietly on the stone circle nodes behind his throne were the Black Flame Demon, the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger, and the Arachne Princess, their passive presence filling the air with a suffocating, ambient pressure that kept every diplomat’s back straight.

To Caius’s left sat the delegation of the Dual Sovereigns of Sun and Moon, flanked by senior elders of House Vel’drin. The Sun King sat silently behind his golden mask, while the Moon Queen leaned forward, her silver-threaded silks draped over the stone armrests. Standing stoically at her shoulder was the violet-haired dark elf warrior, her violet eyes remaining locked onto Caius with sharp, calculating intensity.

To Caius’s right sat the brutal diplomats of the Barbarian Forest Kingdom. Their leader, Grand Chieftain Vorn, a towering brute adorned with bear pelts and bone-carved armguards, rested his massive gauntlets on the basalt table, glaring across at the dark elves with open hostility.

On the table between them lay three pristine, obsidian-embossed message tokens.

”The Solarians are fleeing back toward their borders like whipped curs,” Grand Chieftain Vorn rumbled, breaking the heavy silence with a deep, booming laugh that echoed off the high vaults. ”A magnificent display, Sovereign Macrae. The Forest Kingdom respects strength above all. But let us speak plainly, we came here because of those tokens. The Steppes are unified under your banner, but our hunting grounds touch your eastern ridge. How do you propose to draw these borders without blood?”

”The borders are already drawn by the land itself, Chieftain Vorn,” Caius replied smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless authority that silenced the hall. He reached out, tapping a slender finger against the silver-veined map on the table. A thin thread of spatial mana rippled from his skin, lighting up the eastern riverways in a faint crimson glow.

”The Eastern Redstone River shall serve as the firm border between the Forest Kingdom and the Sovereign Steppes,” Caius stated. ”Your hunters may cross into the low valley during the winter migrations, provided you pay a fifteen percent tariff on all silver-ore and timber exports passing through our western trade roads. In exchange, the Black Obsidian Legion guarantees full protection against Solarian border patrols.”

Chieftain Vorn narrowed his eyes, examining the highlighted river line. ”Fifteen percent is steep for timber, Sovereign.”

”It is cheap compared to fighting my legion,” Caius said coldly, his pale eyes meeting Vorn’s gaze without flinching. ”And far cheaper than fighting the Solarians alone when they inevitably seek revenge for today.”

Vorn held Caius’s stare for three long seconds before a wide, fang-filled grin broke across his scarred face. He slammed a heavy fist onto the table. ”Agreed! The Forest Kingdom accepts the Redstone boundary!”

Caius shifted his gaze across the map, pointing toward the frigid, snow-choked ridges at the edge of the world.

The Moon Queen spoke, her voice like soft velvet masking razor blades. ”House Vel’drin has verified your lineage, son of Evelyn and Cullum. We respect the authority of House Vel’drin’s master. However...” Her golden-masked face turned slightly toward the Arachne Princess standing behind Caius’s throne. ”For thousands of years, our people have bled in the deep dark against the Arachne. You invite us to establish trade through the northeastern tundra passes, yet you keep the royal blood of our ancient enemy as a bound servant at your side.”

The violet-haired dark elf warrior stepped forward half a pace, her hand tightening visibly on the pommel of her curved blade. ”Tell us, Sovereign Caius,” she demanded, her tone laced with suppressed hunger and suspicion. ”By what ancient sorcery did a human break an Arachne Princess? If we are to share trade routes along the frozen waste, we must know if that creature can be controlled, or if she will turn on our supply caravans.”

The Arachne Princess let out a low, unsettling click from her chitinous mandibles, her four blade-like spider-arms flexing dangerously above Caius’s head. The room instantly grew ten degrees colder as a single droplet of corrosive shadow-venom dripped onto the stone floor, sizzling through the basalt with a hiss of white smoke.

Caius did not look back. He simply placed a single hand on the table, allowing a subtle wave of his Crown Core’s absolute domain to ripple across the chamber. The Arachne Princess instantly stilled, lowering her head in complete, docile submission.

”The Arachne are not wild beasts, dark elf,” Caius said smoothly, his voice cutting through the tension like a frozen blade. ”They have a mind of their own, an ancient, calculating intelligence that far predates your golden masks. They cannot be broken by force, nor can they be controlled or tamed like hounds. The Princess behind me is a unique, singular existence, and the secret to her loyalty belongs to me alone.”

He shifted his gaze to the Dual Sovereigns, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register.

”If you want to end a war that drains your kingdom’s blood every winter, hear my advice, even if your pride bleeds from it. Stop treating the Arachne as monsters to be exterminated. If you wish to secure the northeastern boundary permanently, let there be three absolutes in your domain: the Sun Sovereign, the Moon Sovereign, and the Arachne Queen, ruling side by side in a trinity of shadows.”

”Co-rulers?” the violet-haired dark elf warrior spat, her knuckles turning white. ”You ask the blood of the Moon and Sun to sit beside a beast of the deeps? To share the throne with their Queen is blasphemy!”

”They would tear down your gates for a human or an elf,” Caius countered, a dark, ruthless glint flashing in his eyes. ”But they will listen to their own blood. My Princess can serve as the bridge between your two races. She carries my mark, yet her royal lineage commands the respect of every nest in the deep dark. Allow her to sit at your council when border disputes along the frozen waste arise. She will speak with my authority, and enforce the peace with her blades.”

The Moon Queen raised a slender, silk-gloved hand, signaling her warrior to stand down. She stared at the Arachne Princess, observing the eerie, flawless discipline with which the lethal creature obeyed the young Sovereign. The strategic value of turning subterranean horrors into allies settled heavily upon the Dark Elf rulers.

”A trinity of shadows,” the Moon Queen murmured softly. ”If the Princess can command the nests to stand down, the Dual Sovereigns will grant her a seat at the high table. House Vel’drin will honor the pact.”

Before proceeding further, Caius raised a hand, addressing the elephant in the room regarding the old grievances between his family and the underground realm.

”Before we seal the trade and military terms,” Caius said, his voice lowering with solemn gravity, ”we must address the shadow of the past. Twenty-five years ago, my father Cullum Macrae defied the Nyx’ari domain, infiltrating the deepest vaults of the royal palace to rescue my mother, the daughter of the Duke of Alban. That legendary breach birthed an eternal blood feud, one that culminated in the Great Hunt when your vanguard legions and shadow trackers tried to claim my life at sixteen.”

The Dual Sovereigns stiffened behind their masks, and the elders of House Vel’drin watched closely.

”When I fled through the spatial rift,” Caius continued, his pale eyes steady and clear, ”I crossed blades with ten of your elite Moon Palace Shadowblades in the mountain ravines. I did not spill their blood. I broke their stances and sent them back bruised with wooden training swords, as a reminder that the debt of the past had reached its limit. House Vel’drin gave me shelter, and though the Dual Sovereigns once decreed that my blood must stay in the dark, that chapter is finished.”

Caius leaned forward slightly, his gaze meeting the glowing eyes behind the golden masks. ”My father’s war is over. The blood feud between the Macrae bloodline and the Sun and Moon Sovereigns is hereby settled and forgiven. Let us bury the ghosts of the past beneath this basalt table.”

A profound, heavy silence filled the hall as the weight of Caius’s words settled over the dark elf leaders. The Moon Queen gazed at him for a long moment, recalling the cheeky human boy who had humiliated her elite squad with mere wooden toys before vanishing onto the surface. A faint, raspy chuckle seemed to echo from behind her veil, acknowledging the sheer audacity and strength of the young man.

”The past is buried, Sovereign Caius,” the Moon Queen formally declared, her voice carrying the official weight of the Nyx’ari realm. ”Let the blood feud between our domains be washed away by the dawn of this new alliance.”

The Sun King nodded in solemn agreement, sealing the reconciliation with a wave of his golden-gauntleted hand.

”Good,” Caius said, his tone turning crisp once more. ”The northeastern waste routes will remain open to the Dual Sovereigns, tax-free for five years, on one condition.”

The Sun King finally leaned forward, his golden mask catching the ambient flame of the wall torches. ”Name the condition, Sovereign Macrae.”

”When I march on Castle Precipice to claim my birthright from the Solarian Crown,” Caius declared, his pale eyes burning with cold, vengeance-driven light, ”your shadow-curtain spellcasters and House Vel’drin’s assassins will seal the northern mountain passes. Ensure no Solarian reinforcements reach the Duke before I am finished with him.”

The Moon Queen exchanged a brief, silent look with the Sun King and the elders of House Vel’drin. The violet-haired warrior smirked, relaxing her grip on her sword.

”A debt incurred twenty-five years ago in the Misted Valley shall finally be settled,” the Moon Queen murmured softly. ”The Dual Sovereigns accept your terms, Sovereign Caius. The northeastern routes are yours, and the northern passes shall bleed shadow when you give the word.”

Caius leaned back against his throne, resting his forearms on the basalt table as his gaze swept across both delegations. ”Now that the boundaries and alliances are sealed, there is one final matter to establish, the military core that will safeguard this alliance.”

He raised a hand, tapping the silver veins of the map to illuminate a precise tactical battle layout across the Steppes and its borderlands.

”To ensure that this treaty is not merely ink on parchment, I propose the creation of a brand-new, elite tri-race legion,” Caius revealed, his voice echoing with absolute authority. ”A quick-reaction force standing on permanent standby. Should any of our territories or allies come under attack, this legion will deploy immediately as our joint hammer.”

The diplomats leaned in, intrigued by the bold strategic shift.

”The composition and formation shall be absolute,” Caius detailed, tracing the lines on the basalt map:

2,000 Orc Heavy Infantry: Positioned at the absolute center as the immovable, iron-clad vanguard line.

700 Barbarians: Stationed on the left flank as savage, high-impact shock skirmishers.

700 Dark Elf Warriors: Formed on the right flank as agile, lethal martial combatants.

600 Mixed Units: Stationed in the rear formation, comprising scouts, dark elf mages, shamans, and elite archers to weave shadow magic, provide artillery cover, and fire precision salvos from safety.

1,000 Orc Wolf Riders: Divided evenly into two 500-strong cavalry wings on the outer left and right flanks, flanking both the barbarians and dark elves to sweep around enemy lines and crush any pincer attempts.

Chieftain Vorn grunted in approval, nodding slowly. ”A brutal layout. Heavy armor in the gut, berserkers and elves on the sides, wolf riders screening the wings, and magic raining from the back, a truly vicious balance.”

”Exactly,” Caius continued. ”A full year will be allotted for recruitment, joint integration, and rigorous tactical training across all three factions. Once that year concludes, the quick-reaction legion will be fully mobilized and ready for war.”

With a flick of his wrist, Caius summoned three obsidian trade scrolls onto the table. The foundational treaties of the Sovereign Steppes, and the blueprint for the new tri-race force, were sealed in blood and mana, setting the grand stage for the ultimate reckoning against the Solarian Kingdom.
