CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The wind howling through the Iron-Spine Canyon sounded like the dying groans of an ancient beast.

Rising hundreds of feet on either side were sheer walls of black, iron-rich rock that jutted out at jagged angles like exposed ribs. The narrow canyon floor was a death trap, cluttered with sharp scree, dry bone piles, and unpredictable thermal vents that belched sulfurous steam into the freezing mountain air.

Caius moved through the shadows of the canyon like a specter, his boots making no sound against the loose gravel. His dark traveler’s cloak snapped in the gale-force winds, but beneath the frayed fabric, his liquid obsidian core hummed with constant, quiet precision.

His Eye of the Loom remained fully active, overlaying his sight with threads of ambient mana. Across the jagged canyon ridges, the threads pulsed in jagged, aggressive patterns.

He was not alone.

The Iron-Spine Canyon was notorious for two things: the Iron-Skull Ridge-Runners, who served as scout vanguards loyal to Krag’gath, and the Iron-Mane Wyverns, territorial beasts that nested in the high basalt spires.

High above, a sharp, reptilian shriek cut through the howling wind.

Caius didn’t break stride. His perception expanded, tracing a massive, leathery silhouette dropping at terminal velocity from a thermal vent five hundred feet up. An Iron-Mane Wyvern, its scales coated in metallic sheen, aimed its iron-hard talons straight for his head.

Caius waited. Four hundred feet. Two hundred feet. Fifty feet.

At the final second, as the beast’s shadow engulfed him, Caius executed a micro-burst of spatial displacement.

FZZT.

He vanished. The Wyvern’s talons shattered the basalt floor where he had stood a millisecond before, sending a shower of sharp stone fragments exploding outward.

Before the beast could roar or re-orient its massive wings, Caius materialized directly on its thick nape. He didn’t draw the Sabre-Twin Fangs. Instead, he placed his open palm against the joint where the monster’s skull met its spine.

CRACK-BOOM!

A concentrated blast of spatial-lightning detonated internally, bypassing the thick metallic scales entirely. The Wyvern let out a stifled gasp, its body going instantly limp as its nervous system fried. It collapsed onto the rock face, sliding ten feet before coming to a complete halt.

Caius stepped off the corpse, adjusting his cloak collar.

From the high ridges surrounding the kill, half a dozen guttural gasps echoed down through the rocks.

The ridge-runners had been watching. A squad of eight heavy-armored Orc scouts, clad in bone-reinforced iron and wielding heavy repeating crossbows, lowered their vantage perches. They had intended to let the Wyvern soften up the hooded intruder, but instead, they had just watched him execute a top-tier apex predator in the span of two heartbeats without even unsheathing a weapon.

”What... what kind of monster is that?!” an Orc scout hissed from two hundred feet up the cliff face.

”Signal the stronghold!” another barked, reaching for a horn. ”Tell them a spatial-user is coming through the pass!”

Before the horn could touch the scout’s tusks, Caius’s pale eyes flashed with dark purple static.

He vanished from the canyon floor.

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

In three lightning-fast blinks of spatial flash, Caius flashed up the vertical cliff wall. The scouts didn’t even have time to swing their heavy crossbows before a wave of kinetic pressure slammed into their line.

Four scouts were hurled off the ledge, plunging into the canyon below. Caius landed lightly on the remaining narrow ledge, standing directly in front of the lead scout who held the warning horn.

The Orc scout froze, his single hand trembling against his iron horn, staring into the liquid obsidian depth of Caius’s eyes beneath his hood.

Caius reached out, his gloved hand calmly taking the horn from the Orc’s paralyzed grip.

”Save your breath,” Caius whispered softly, his voice colder than the canyon wind. He crushed the iron horn into a twisted ball of scrap in his bare fist and let the pieces fall into the abyss below.

Without another word, Caius stepped off the ledge, dropping gracefully back toward the canyon floor and resuming his march north.

Behind him, the surviving scout collapsed against the stone wall, shivering not from the mountain frost, but from pure, unadulterated terror.

The canyon was breached. Beyond the northern ridge lay the vast, ominous jagged peaks of the Crag of the Skull-Throne.
