CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The basin of the Ashen-Crags had become an apocalyptic theater of slaughter.

For three hours, the two allied clans had torn each other apart in a desperate struggle for survival. Fourteen-foot rock giants smashed through ranks of skeletal ghouls, reducing undead bodies to clouds of bone dust, while dark necromantic plagues crawled across the giants’ stone bodies, eating through their armor and corroding the mana cores buried beneath their rocky flesh.

Neither side was fighting for victory anymore. They were fighting simply to survive.

Caius stood upon a rising ledge of black obsidian with his arms folded across his chest, watching the carnage below with cold, emotionless eyes. Beside him stood his three blindfolded puppet warlords: Krag’gath, Borgath, and Gor’muka. Their enormous bodies remained perfectly still as dense energy hummed within their cores, waiting for their master’s command.

At the center of the battlefield, Giant King Thrum finally broke through the inner ring of undead guardians. With a thunderous roar, the massive warrior drove his obsidian fist forward and punched directly through Grand Necromancer Mal’kor’s chest. Black blood sprayed across his arm as Mal’kor convulsed, his withered fingers clawing desperately at the giant’s wrist before his body went limp.

Thrum ripped his arm free and raised the glowing, pale-green essence bead of the dead necromancer above his head. He turned toward the obsidian ridge where Caius stood and roared across the ruined basin.

”I won! The Ashen-Crags stand! I have fulfilled your command. I am your second-in-command!”

Caius looked at him for several seconds before stepping from the ledge. Spatial energy gathered beneath his feet, forming a cushion of violet distortion that carried him gently toward the crater floor. He landed ten paces from the exhausted giant and allowed his pale eyes to sweep across the battlefield.

Thousands of corpses covered the ground. Broken weapons and shattered armor were scattered across the ash, while pools of black blood collected between the rocks. The survivors of both clans were barely standing, too exhausted to raise their weapons again.

The battle was over.

Caius looked back at Thrum. ”You did.”

Relief briefly crossed the giant’s face. He had survived. He had won. He had earned the position that Caius had promised him.

Thrum lowered his arm and stepped forward. ”Then I...”

Caius’s hand moved before he could finish.

A streak of violet spatial lightning flashed across the short distance between them and pierced directly through Thrum’s chest.

The giant froze.

His eyes widened as his mind struggled to comprehend the betrayal. Blood poured from the wound as his enormous body staggered backward before crashing heavily onto the ash-covered ground.

Caius approached without haste. Thrum’s fingers twitched against the stone as he struggled to raise his head. ”You promised.”

Caius looked down at him without a trace of pity. ”I said your life would be spared, and your core would remain intact. I never said you would keep your free will.”

He reached down and plunged his hand into Thrum’s chest. A moment later, Caius tore out the giant’s glowing mana core and held it briefly in his palm before placing it beside Mal’kor’s pale-green Necromantic mana core.

Thrum’s massive body went still.

The battle had given Caius exactly what he wanted: two powerful essences, two additional warlords, and two more weapons for the army he was building.

Within the hour, the final rituals were complete. Dark energy flooded across the battlefield as the dead bodies of the fallen rose beneath Caius’s command. Stone cracked and bones shifted while waves of necromantic and spatial energy surged through dead flesh and ancient rock.

When the shadows finally parted, two new figures stood behind Caius. One was the massive rock-skinned construct of Giant King Thrum, while the other was the withered skeletal husk of Grand Necromancer Mal’kor, still gripping his ancient staff. Both stood motionless beneath black blindfolds, waiting for Caius’s command.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Five Grand Chieftains.

Five immortal warlords.

Five mindless servants bound to a single will.

Caius turned toward the survivors of the five tribes. Five thousand elite veterans remained, standing shoulder to shoulder across the ruined basin in absolute silence. No one challenged him. No one dared question the fate of their former leaders.

The Shattered Steppes had been conquered.

The Orc lands were no longer divided among rival tribes. Their chiefs were dead, their armies belonged to Caius, and their territories had been forged beneath a single ruthless will.

Caius had come to the Steppes seeking the orc responsible for his father’s death. Instead, he had created something far more dangerous than a simple blood feud. He had built the foundation of an army, and the blood debt that had brought him here was beginning to transform into a campaign of conquest.

Weeks later, thousands of miles away...

Deep beneath the surface, within the sprawling subterranean territories of the dark elves, a tavern remained crowded despite the late hour. The air hung thick with the scent of fermented mushroom wine, burning moss, pipe smoke, and stale sweat, while mercenaries, shadow-weavers, and underground brokers filled the wooden tables and whispered nervously over their drinks.

News from the surface had finally reached the deep trade routes. It had traveled from merchant caravans to smugglers, from smugglers to mercenaries, and from mercenaries to taverns like this one, spreading through the border realms like a venomous plague.

Behind the scarred wooden counter stood Old Bones, the grizzled veteran who had become the tavern’s owner. His mechanical eyepatch glinted beneath the dim lanterns as he wiped down a wooden mug, his permanent scowl making it clear that the noisy patrons had already tested what little patience he possessed.

The swinging doors suddenly burst open.

Two cloaked messengers stumbled into the tavern, both covered in dust. One of them hurried toward the counter and slammed a leather map onto the wooden surface before grabbing a flagon of wine.

”Have you heard the news from the Steppes?”

Old Bones did not look up from the mug. ”Unless someone finally found a way to make you two useful, I don’t care.”

The messenger ignored the insult and took a hurried drink before leaning across the counter. ”The Orc clans. They’ve been united.”

Old Bones finally raised his head. ”Orcs don’t unite. They kill each other over scraps of meat by Tuesday, and by Wednesday they are probably eating the ones they killed.”

”Not this time.”

Old Bones resumed wiping the mug. ”Who bought them off? A northern warlord?”

”No.” The second messenger leaned closer, lowering his voice. ”A human.”

The cloth in Old Bones’s hand stopped moving. ”One human?”

The messenger nodded. ”One human.”

Old Bones slowly placed the mug on the counter. ”Explain.”

The messenger glanced around the tavern before continuing. ”They say he appeared in the Steppes weeks ago. At first, the tribes thought he was simply another outsider looking for trouble. Then the fighting began.”

”And?”

”The Grand Chieftains tried to destroy him.” The messenger swallowed. ”All five are dead.”

Old Bones’s single visible eye narrowed. ”All five?”

”Aye.” The first messenger leaned closer. ”But that is not the worst of it.”

Old Bones said nothing.

”He did not simply kill them. He brought them back.”

Several mercenaries nearby turned their heads.

The messenger lowered his voice to a whisper. ”Five of the most powerful warlords of the Steppes now serve him. Blindfolded. Bound to his will. They say the creatures cannot disobey him.”

Old Bones stared at the messenger. ”Necromancy?”

”Maybe.”

”Maybe?”

”Some claim he is a sorcerer. Others say he is a spatial mage. There are stories of violet lightning, armies disappearing in flashes of distortion, and entire groups of warriors being slaughtered before they can even see him move.”

Old Bones narrowed his eyes as a wave of realization washed over him. That really hid his secrets well, he thought to himself, his mechanical eye glinting in the dark shadows of the tavern. Where on earth did he learn how to weave flesh and command souls? Could old Elder Orven have secretly taught him some forbidden magic when no one else was watching?

The second messenger looked toward the other tables before continuing. ”They have given him a name.”

Old Bones’s expression hardened. ”What name?”

”The Sovereign of the Steppes.”

The tavern seemed quieter for a moment.

Old Bones stared at the messengers without speaking. The title itself meant little to him, but the description was undeniable.

A human. A spatial mage. Violet lightning. A warrior who could overwhelm entire groups before they could react, with five powerful warlords reduced to obedient puppets.

Old Bones knew instantly who it was. The signs were far too distinct for it to be anyone else.

A crooked smile slowly appeared across the old veteran’s scarred face. ”So the brat finally conquered something.”

The messenger looked confused. ”You know him?”

Old Bones gave a low, raspy chuckle. ”Know him?” He leaned back against the counter, his smile widening as he raised his gaze toward the cavern ceiling. ”Good hunting, Caius.”

For a moment, the old assassin’s expression softened before his familiar mischievous grin returned. ”Just wait until I tell the Patriarch and Sereth about this.”

He began laughing again. ”I cannot wait to see their faces when they hear what you have done, brat.”

With another booming laugh, Old Bones pushed himself away from the counter. Before anyone in the tavern could react, his figure blurred into the surrounding shadows and vanished without a trace.

The two messengers stared at the empty space where he had been standing, thoroughly baffled by the old tavern keeper’s reaction.
