CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The following morning, the small stone courtyard lay quiet beneath the pale, azure illumination of the crystal vaults embedded high above the cavern. Caius stood across from Old Bones in the center of the arena, his wooden practice swords resting at his sides as he waited to learn the high-level movement technique that had been promised to him.

Old Bones looked considerably less amused than he had the previous afternoon. He had spent the better part of the previous evening experimenting with the mana-thread technique Caius had fabricated, and although he had managed to force his dark elf mana into a crude, functioning version of the slowing effect, his intense curiosity had far from been satisfied.

Now, however, it was Caius’s turn to receive a lesson.

”Today, I will teach you Shadow Steps,” Old Bones stated plainly, his voice devoid of its usual lazy cadence.

Caius straightened his shoulders, bowing his head slightly. ”Old Bones teacher.”

The old assassin’s expression immediately went flat, his features freezing into a completely blank stare. ”Just keep the ’Old Bones.’”

Caius blinked, keeping his face perfectly innocent. ”Teacher?”

”Don’t,” Old Bones warned, rubbing his weathered forehead with two bony fingers as a heavy sigh escaped his chest. ”Just call me Old Bones.”

Caius nodded solemnly. ”Yes, Old Bones teacher.”

Old Bones stared at him in absolute silence for three long seconds. ”Arrghh,” he muttered, turning his head away in exasperation. ”I should have taught you nothing.”

A faint, suppressed smile flickered across Caius’s lips before he smoothed his expression back into strict neutrality.

The old assassin eventually turned his gaze back to the boy, his tone shifting into one of quiet, stern gravity. ”Shadow Steps is nothing like the baseline movement arts you have been practicing. It is one of the most demanding executioner arts a dark elf assassin can ever hope to master. It does not simply make your feet move faster across the floor; it fundamentally alters how your physical body interacts with the space around you.”

Old Bones took two slow steps toward the nearest patch of deep shadow where the crystal light failed to reach the granite floor. ”Most warriors think of shadows as merely the absence of light,” he said, looking down at the dark outline cast by the stone wall. ”An executioner knows better.”

Caius listened intently, absorbing every word.

”Shadow Steps treats darkness as a physical medium,” Old Bones explained. ”Your internal mana must recognize the shadow, merge with its structural properties, and then drag your physical mass along its boundary.”

The old assassin raised his sharp red eyes, locking them onto Caius. ”This is a strictly guarded secret art,” he said softly, his voice dropping an octave. ”I have never taught it to another living soul.”

Caius grasped the weight of the statement immediately. ”And I cannot teach it to anyone else?”

”Correct,” Old Bones replied, his gaze unyielding. ”What I pass down to you today stays strictly between the two of us.”

Caius bowed his head firmly. ”I understand.”

”Then sit,” Old Bones instructed, stepping toward the center of the courtyard.

Caius lowered himself onto the cold stone floor, crossing his legs into a comfortable meditative posture. Old Bones sat directly opposite him, extending his right hand and placing his thumb directly against Caius’s forehead.

Caius recognized the transfer method immediately. It was similar to the direct soul-transmission technique Sereth had used when imparting the baseline forms of his dual-blade style. However, the mana radiating from Old Bones’s hand felt completely different from Sereth’s sharp, crystalline energy. The old assassin’s internal power was bone-chilling, vast, and silent, resembling an endless, empty void. The shadows surrounding his physical body seemed to stretch and gather toward his outstretched palm.

”Do not resist the flow,” Old Bones commanded softly.

Caius closed his eyes, relaxing his spiritual defenses.

A wave of icy, concentrated mana surged through his crown point and flooded his consciousness. The physical courtyard dissolved instantly from his perception.

For a terrifying second, Caius felt as though he were falling through an endless, starless night. Then, a vivid vision materialized within his mind’s eye.

He saw a tall silhouette standing upon an expansive stone floor under the light of a single moon: Old Bones. The assassin lowered his lead foot, sending a pulse of black-gray mana down through his leg. The shadow beneath his boots instantly intensified, becoming dense and liquid-like as his physical footprint merged seamlessly with the darkness.

Then his body moved.

Caius watched in fascination as Old Bones’s physical form stretched into an elongated, dark silhouette across the floor before suddenly reassembling its solid state several yards away without making a single sound.

Shadow Anchor.

The foundational knowledge of the first stage flooded Caius’s mind. The technique did not rely on brute-force acceleration; instead, the practitioner anchored their mana directly into a nearby shadow, shedding physical friction and atmospheric resistance for a split second to slide through connected darkness before restoring their physical state. It was an elite art designed to evade incoming strikes, shift angles instantly, or slide directly into an opponent’s blind spot.

The mental vision shifted once again.

Old Bones moved a second time, but this time his entire physical structure began to collapse inward. His flesh, clothes, and weapons dissolved into a fluid, flowing mass of dark mist. An enemy sword swept through the exact space where his chest had been, but the steel passed through the mist without encountering the slightest resistance. There was no physical collision and no blood.

The dark mist glided across the floor, climbed effortlessly up the vertical stone wall, and moved like liquid shadow before condensing back into a solid human shape behind the attacker.

Umbral Veiling.

Caius comprehended the principle instantly. The user’s physical body became semi-corporeal while in motion, allowing physical weapons and non-magical strikes to pass harmlessly through their central mass. However, the internal strain was immensely higher, requiring the practitioner to maintain absolute spiritual focus while dispersing their flesh and reassembling their physical body at the exact microsecond of emergence.

Finally, the vision expanded into a breathtaking, final stage.

The surrounding darkness grew vast and interconnected. Every shadow within line of sight seemed to vibrate in harmony, with Old Bones standing at the absolute center of the web.

His body slowly faded from existence. There was no sudden burst of speed, no lingering mist, and no displaced air. He simply ceased to exist in his original location, emerging instantaneously from a completely separate shadow forty paces away as if space itself had been folded through the dark.

World-Shade Merge.

Caius witnessed the pinnacle of the art. At its ultimate level, the practitioner did not merely slide through shadows or turn into mist; they synchronized their internal mana with the fundamental element of darkness itself, turning every connected shadow into a potential point of instantaneous emergence.

The stream of raw information continued to pour into Caius’s mind, but Old Bones did not simply provide the visual forms. He transmitted the internal meridian routing, the precise mental frequencies required to alter physical density, the critical warnings regarding premature transitions, and the subtle mistakes that could trap a user’s limbs between physical states. Above all, the transmission impressed upon Caius that Shadow Steps could never be mastered through academic understanding alone; it had to be woven directly into the body’s subconscious instincts.

The spiritual link slowly dissolved, and the mental vision faded back into blackness.

Caius opened his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath as Old Bones withdrew his hand.

He remained motionless on the stone floor for several moments, letting the vast blueprint of the three stages settle into his consciousness. He understood the theoretical framework completely, but he knew that intellectual comprehension was a far cry from practical execution.

Old Bones watched him closely, his red eyes assessing the boy’s spiritual state. ”You have received the true foundation.”

Caius looked down at his palms, feeling the newly opened circulation pathways tingling beneath his skin. ”How long does it typically take to master the first stage?”

Old Bones gave a short, dry laugh. ”That depends entirely on whether your body survives the initial training process.”

Caius met his gaze, finding no trace of humor in the old man’s face.

”Shadow Anchor is difficult,” Old Bones warned sternly. ”Umbral Veiling is significantly harder. And World-Shade Merge?” The old assassin narrowed his eyes into dangerous slits. ”Most dark elf executioners live their entire lives without ever reaching it.”

Caius fell silent, his eyes drifting toward the scattered patches of shade lying across the stone courtyard. For the first time in his life, those dark spots no longer looked like simple empty spaces where light failed to reach. They looked like open doors, fluid pathways, and places to vanish without a trace.

Old Bones stood up, dusting off his robes. ”Do not attempt to force the second or third stage yet. Master the first stage until your muscles can execute Shadow Anchor without a single conscious thought. Once you can do that, we will see whether your body is worthy of learning the rest.”

Caius rose slowly to his feet, his gaze still fixed on the dark corners of the yard. Another deadly secret now resided within his soul, one that not even Sereth knew he possessed. And this time, Caius intended to guard the knowledge fiercely. Between him and the old assassin, the secrets of Shadow Steps would remain buried deep within the shadows.
