CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The cold mountain wind howled against the heavy iron-reinforced doors of the outer gatehouse, its distant whistle echoing down into the depths of Castle Precipice. High above on the battlements, the war horns remained silent, but deep within the stone heart of the fortress, the subterranean training chamber burned with torchlight and smelled of sweat and old timber.

Caius stood in the center of the hall, his feet planted wide on the icy stone slabs, shifting his weight slightly to test his footing. At fourteen, he was lean and wire-thin, fast on his feet, but still lacked the dense muscle mass needed to comfortably absorb heavy impact. His palms were slick inside his padded leather gloves as he held a short wooden arming sword in a high guard.

Opposite him stood his father, Sir Cullum Macrae. The veteran knight held a heavy wooden longsword in one hand, resting its tip casually against the floor.

”Your guard is slumping, Caius,” Cullum said, his voice hard as flint. ”You are letting the tip drop because your shoulders are tired.”

”My guard is fine,” Caius muttered, tightening his grip and raising the point back up to eye level.

”Show me, then. Come.”

Caius moved first. He pushed off his back foot, driving forward to cut toward his father’s collarbone. Cullum did not bother with a heavy parry; he simply Voided the attack, shifting his back foot a half-step off the center line. The short wooden blade sliced through empty air, pulling Caius off-balance.

Before Caius could reset, Cullum used the flat of his heavy wooden longsword to slap Caius’s lead wrist.

”Focus,” Cullum commanded. ”You threw your entire upper body into that strike. If I had stepped inside your guard, you would have taken a dagger to the armpit.”

Caius gritted his teeth, spinning his hips to reset his stance and immediately throwing a quick diagonal bind toward Cullum’s ribs.

CLACK!

Cullum caught the blow on the crossguard of his wooden longsword, binding the weapons together. The violent jarring force traveled straight up Caius’s forearms, rattling his elbow joints.

”Push through it!” Caius gasped, trying to lever his wooden blade down Cullum’s to win the center line.

”You cannot win a contest of pure leverage against someone thirty pounds heavier than you,” Cullum said coolly. With a sudden twist of his hilt, Cullum executed a sweeping winding action, catching Caius’s crossguard and ripping the smaller sword sideways out of his alignment.

Caius’s blade clattered to the stone. Before he could recover his balance, Cullum hooked his front ankle behind Caius’s lead leg and shoved his shoulder forward.

Caius fell hard, the breath exploding from his lungs as his back hit the freezing stone floor.

”You are watching my blade again,” Cullum said, standing over him with his wooden longsword held low.

Caius winced, rolling onto his elbow and dragging air back into his chest. ”I was watching your shoulders, Father! I saw you start the bind!”

”That is precisely the problem,” Cullum replied. He lowered his wooden point until it rested an inch from Caius’s neck. ”You saw what I wanted you to see. I gave you a subtle tell, dropping my shoulder on purpose, so you would push into the bind, leaving your lead foot planted.”

”I am trying to read your body cues like you taught me!” Caius protested, slapping the heavy wood away with his gloved hand as he scrambled back up to his feet.

Cullum didn’t give him time to dust off his padded gambeson. He raised his longsword and executed a rapid series of light, probing thrusts. Caius scrambled backward, barely parrying the first two with panicked, wide swings of his recovered sword. The third thrust slipped easily beneath his guard, the blunted wooden tip thumping hard into Caius’s sternum and knocking him back two steps.

”Your eyes are deceiving you,” Cullum said. ”Your opponent’s body can lie. His shoulders can feign exhaustion. His stance can fake a weakness. Even the direction of his sword tip can be a lure.”

Caius wiped a mix of sweat and grime from his forehead with his sleeve, breathing heavily. ”If I cannot trust my eyes to read your body or your sword, then what am I supposed to watch?”

Cullum’s expression softened slightly, though his eyes remained sharp. ”Everything. The space between us, the rhythm of your breath, and things you have not yet been taught to feel.”

He stepped back and held the wooden longsword at his side.

Caius blinked, lowering his weapon. ”Why are you stopping? We haven’t finished the drills.”

”Because you have reached the limit of what conventional footwork and swordplay can teach you against a superior opponent,” Cullum said, walking toward the center of the subterranean chamber. ”Your instinct is good. Your speed is fine. But you are fighting like an ordinary warrior, relying entirely on physical sight.”

”What else is there?” Caius asked, following his father.

Cullum stopped and turned around. ”Your training changes tonight, Caius. You are fourteen. You are old enough to learn what belongs to the Macrae family alone.”

Caius felt a sudden cold chill that had nothing to do with the draft in the room. ”The family art?”

”The art we do not write in the castle archives,” Cullum confirmed. He raised his right hand and touched two fingers to the skin just beneath his eyes. ”The bloodline legacy passed strictly from parent to child.”

”What is its name?”

”The Eye of the Loom.”

The words seemed to hang heavy in the quiet, torchlit hall. Cullum pointed to the floor. ”Sit.”

Caius set his wooden sword aside and crossed his legs on the cold floor. Cullum knelt directly across from him, sitting back on his heels.

”Close your eyes,” Cullum instructed.

Caius obeyed, the red glow of the torches fading into darkness behind his eyelids.

”Slow your breathing. Empty your mind of the sparring match, of your aching shoulders, and of the noise of the wind outside.”

Caius took a long, steady breath through his nose, letting his heart rate settle. ”I’m ready.”

”The Eye of the Loom is not simply a trick to sharpen your physical vision,” Cullum said quietly. ”It is the opening of your awareness to the internal network of mana pathways that thread through every living creature. From the central core, mana circulates along these channels like blood through veins, nourishing the flesh, fueling motion, and broadcasting intent.”

Cullum reached out and pressed two fingers firmly against the center of Caius’s forehead, right over his third eye. A sudden prickle of heat blazed at the point of contact, sinking deep into Caius’s skull.

”This is the transfer of our bloodline key,” Cullum murmured, his voice strained as a subtle vibration passed between them. ”I am unsealing the ocular pathways in your brain that have remained dormant since your birth.”

Caius gasped as the heat surged through his optic nerves. ”It burns, Father!”

”Hold firm,” Cullum commanded softly. ”Do not force your eyes open. Do not resist the fire. Let the bloodline legacy align itself with your own mana channels.

Caius focused entirely on enduring the sensation. At first, there was only blinding white heat, but as Cullum channeled his own energy to forge the connection, the sensation settled into a pulsing, rhythmic beat. In the pitch blackness behind his eyelids, a faint spark ignited. The spark branched outward, expanding into intricate, glowing web-like roots of soft, pale-blue light.

”Good,” Cullum whispered, his fingers easing away. ”The seal is broken. The legacy is yours. Now open your eyes.”

When Caius opened his eyelids, the subterranean chamber looked radically transformed. The stone walls, the flickering torches, and the wooden weapon racks were muted, as if pushed into the background. Superimposed over his father’s body was a breathtaking, luminous grid of vibrant blue channels. Intricate mana pathways crisscrossed through Cullum’s flesh, throbbing in sync with his heart.

”I can see them,” Caius whispered, his breath catching. ”The pathways... they look like rivers of light inside you.”

”This is the foundation of our line,” Cullum said, standing up and stepping back. As he moved, the major pathways in his torso pooled inward, converging into a dense, blinding sphere of blue fire sitting directly behind his sternum. ”Every Macrae begins by mastering the First Thread: Far Sight.”

”That sphere in your chest...” Caius said, scrambling to his feet.

”That is my mana core, the central reservoir feeding every pathway in my body,” Cullum explained. ”Far Sight locks your perception onto an opponent’s core through their internal network. Once locked, you do not need to search for your target with physical eyes. You anchor your mind directly to their presence in space.”

Caius concentrated on the bright pulse in Cullum’s chest. An invisible, elastic tether snapped into place within his mind, linking his awareness directly to that burning center. He knew instantly that even if the torches went out, he would know his father’s exact position down to the millimeter.

”I feel it,” Caius said, swallowing hard. ”It feels like an unbreakable anchor.”

”It has a maximum range at your level,” Cullum noted, stepping back until he reached the far wall. ”Twenty meters is the standard limit for an unrefined First Thread. As your own pathways widen and mature, you will lock onto multiple cores at once. One core at the beginner stage. Two or three as an intermediate. Four or more once you reach mastery.”

”So no one can hide their core from me in a fight?” Caius asked, staring at the bright node shining through his father’s chest.

”Not unless their suppression technique can choke off their own pathways,” Cullum replied. ”But Far Sight is only the anchor. The real lethal advantage comes from reading the circulation through the Second Thread.”

Cullum took a combat stance, leaving his arms loose. ”Observe my pathways now. Activate Inner Sight.”

Caius narrowed his focus, pushing past the core to examine the smaller, branching channels running down Cullum’s legs and arms. The pale streams grew razor-sharp, illuminating every major meridian line.

Before Cullum moved a muscle, a surge of brilliant blue light rushed violently down the primary pathway feeding his left quad and calf.

”You’re stepping left!” Caius blurted out.

A fraction of a second later, Cullum lunged to the left.

Caius’s eyes widened in awe. ”The mana flooded your leg pathways before your foot even shifted!”

”That is Inner Sight,” Cullum said, easing out of his stance. ”Physical movement requires physical muscles to contract, which takes time. But mana must travel through the internal pathways to fuel those muscles before the flesh can act. Inner Sight reveals the intent at the source, long before the strike manifests in physical space.”

”That means I can counter any blow before it happens,” Caius said, excitement swelling in his chest.

”Do not mistake reading mana pathways for absolute prediction,” Cullum warned sternly, his tone instantly crushing Caius’s excitement. ”If an opponent possesses master control over their pathways, they can divert mana mid-stroke, or flush false signals into decoy channels to trick your vision. Furthermore, reading another person’s pathways places an enormous strain on your own nervous system. Overload your eyes, and your vision will burn out, leaving you completely blind.”

Caius nodded slowly, taking in the gravity of the warning. ”Far Sight anchors the core. Inner Sight reads the pathways.”

”Correct,” Cullum said.

”You mentioned three Threads,” Caius remembered, looking up. ”What is the final one?”

Cullum fell silent. The luminous light tracing his pathways dimmed as his expression hardened, the pride in his posture giving way to solemn caution.

”The Third Thread is called Fate Sight,” Cullum said softly.

”Fate Sight?” Caius repeated. ”How does it use the pathways?”

”Inner Sight reads the mana moving inside the body,” Cullum explained, staring up toward the dark stone ceiling. ”Fate Sight projects those readings outward into the air itself. It allows a master to see the ghostly trails of mana bleeding off an opponent’s weapon before the swing even completes. It maps the physical trajectory before the blade arrives.”

Caius took a step forward. ”Why haven’t you transferred that part of the legacy to me?”

”Because your pathways cannot handle it,” Cullum said bluntly, tapping his own chest over his core. ”The Third Thread requires a rare, mutated core structure: a Crown Core.”

Caius stared at his father. ”A Crown Core... the legendary core from the ancestral records?”

”It is no myth,” Cullum said grimly. ”A Crown Core possesses secondary valves that regulate the terrifying volume of energy Fate Sight demands. Without a Crown Core, forcing your pathways to process Fate Sight will rupture your internal channels and permanently shatter your mind. The energy burden alone would kill you in seconds.”

Caius looked down at his gloved hands, feeling the lingering heat deep within his forehead. ”Do I have a Crown Core?”

”Neither of us will know until your main core matures,” Cullum answered quietly. ”Until then, Fate Sight remains strictly sealed.”

Silence returned to the cavernous hall, broken only by the crackle of the wall torches. Caius looked at his father, finally understanding the secret behind Sir Cullum’s legendary combat record. It was never just superior strength or raw reaction time; he had been reading his enemies’ internal mana flows before they could even complete a thought.

”You’ve been watching my pathways during every spar,” Caius realized softly.

Cullum allowed a faint, rare smile to touch his lips. ”Since you were old enough to hold a stick.”

Caius bent down, picked up his short wooden practice sword, and gripped it tightly with both hands. ”Then teach me how to master these channels.”

Cullum stepped forward, his expression turning stern once more. ”I will. But remember this, Caius: the Eye of the Loom is a tool, not a replacement for iron discipline and physical power. If you rely on seeing pathways while neglecting your footwork and swordcraft, your vision will become a crutch that gets you killed.”

Cullum extended a hand, pulling Caius to his feet.

”Tomorrow at dawn, we begin conditioning your pathways for Far Sight,” Cullum said, walking toward the weapon rack to rest his wooden longsword against the pegs.

”And Inner Sight?” Caius asked.

”You will train them together,” Cullum replied without turning. ”You will practice maintaining a lock on my core while reading the mana surges in my legs.”

”And if my Crown Core awakens?” Caius asked, his voice steady.

Cullum stopped at the rack, his hand lingering on the wooden frame. He looked back over his shoulder, his dark eyes locking onto Caius’s.

”If that day comes, we will unseal Fate Sight,” Cullum said softly. ”Until then, focus on the first two Threads. Pick up your sword. We have one more hour of drills before breakfast.”
