CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

Two days passed after Caius and Sereth left the northern forest. The land gradually changed as they continued north. The dense trees became thinner, giving way to rugged hills blanketed in frost. The air grew progressively colder with every mile, and the biting wind carried the sharp scent of snow from the mountains ahead.

By the second afternoon, Caius noticed something rising beyond the hazy horizon. At first, they appeared to be dark clouds resting against the pale sky. Then he realized they were mountains.

A vast mountain range stretched across the northern boundary, its peaks rising like enormous stone walls between the lands they had crossed and whatever waited beyond. Some summits were jagged and black, while others were completely buried under thick sheets of snow and ice. Great frozen formations clung to the cliffs, catching the pale, weak light of the distant sun. Glaciers choked the valleys between the peaks, and massive shelves of ice hung from the higher cliffs like frozen rivers suspended in midair.

Caius stopped walking and stared at the towering range. They seemed impossibly massive.

Some of the highest summits disappeared into the clouds, their upper slopes hidden behind swirling curtains of blinding snow. Even from this distance, Caius could tell the mountains were not simply cold. They looked deeply hostile, as if the land itself had been shaped to prevent anyone from ever crossing them.

Caius looked over at Sereth. ”Are we walking to those mountains?”

Sereth glanced toward the looming range without breaking stride. ”Yes.”

Caius looked ahead again. ”There are ice formations everywhere.”

”The mountains are not where we are going.”

Caius frowned slightly. ”We are going under them?”

Sereth continued walking. ”Above ground, the wind will kill you long before the cold does. Once we reach the higher elevations, the storms become strong enough to strip the warmth from your body in minutes. Ice can form over exposed skin instantly, and a traveler can disappear beneath a snowdrift without leaving a trace.”

Caius fell into step behind him. ”So we go underneath.”

”We do.”

Sereth led him along a narrow, winding path between the frozen hills. They traveled for several hours until the colossal mass of the mountains loomed directly before them, blocking out the sky. Caius expected to see a paved road or perhaps a heavily fortified gatehouse carved into the rock face.

Instead, Sereth approached a cluster of massive, natural-looking rock formations. As they drew closer, Caius noticed the subtle touch of artifice. The heavy stones had been arranged purposefully around a dark, gaping opening hidden deep beneath a massive stone overhang.

It was a cave. But it was far too vast to be a simple natural shelter. The entrance was wide enough for a dozen warriors to march through abreast, and the granite walls showed clear signs of having been shaped by ancient hands. Faint, weathered runes covered portions of the stone, gleaming with a dull, residual energy.

Sereth stopped at the threshold. Caius peered into the profound darkness within, unable to see anything past the outer shadows.

Sereth turned his head toward the boy. ”Inside is the territory of the dark elves.”

Caius straightened his posture.

Sereth’s expression hardened into a severe mask. ”When we enter, do not say a single word.”

Caius nodded.

”Understand?”

Caius nodded again.

Sereth stepped across the threshold into the cave. Caius followed closely behind.

The moment they crossed into the passage, the howling wind vanished. The difference was instantaneous. Outside, the cold had been biting viciously at Caius’s face and hands. Inside, the air remained cold, but it was still and far more bearable. The temperature stayed low enough that every breath produced a faint white mist, yet it was a merciful reprieve from the freezing gales outside.

The tunnel descended gradually into the gloom. Caius’s eyes quickly adjusted to the dim light. The walls were formed of solid black stone, worn smooth in places by centuries of passage. Faint, cryptic markings appeared occasionally along the rock face, some chiseled deep into the granite while others were nearly erased by time.

Sereth marched onward without hesitation. Then, abruptly, he stopped. Caius nearly collided with his back.

A voice rang out from the shadows ahead. ”Sereth of House Vel’drin.”

The voice echoed hollowly through the damp passage. ”You have finally returned.”

Caius scanned the darkness, but the speaker remained entirely hidden.

The voice continued, cool and detached. ”And who is this human child?”

Sereth did not turn around. ”This child is my ward.”

Silence stretched through the tunnel. For a moment, even the draft seemed to halt. Then the unseen guard answered. ”You may pass.”

Sereth resumed walking, but before they could move further into the depths, the hidden voice spoke once more. ”Sereth.”

Sereth paused, his foot hovering over the stone.

”The arachne ferals have become far more active while you were gone. Several packs have been spotted near the outer tunnels. Be careful.”

Sereth turned his head slightly toward the hidden alcove. ”When I was away, did you all become lazy?” His voice carried a dry, unmistakable edge of amusement. ”Have you forgotten how to cull the arachne ferals?”

The hidden warrior offered no reply. Sereth let out a quiet breath through his nose and continued down the path.

Caius followed him deeper into the subterranean world, the words echoing in his mind. Arachne. He wondered what manner of creatures could make an entire settlement of dark elf warriors uneasy enough to issue a warning to a returning veteran.

Neither of them spoke again as they walked.

Further back near the entrance, once Sereth and Caius were well out of earshot, one of the younger guards stepped out from the shadows of the rock wall. He looked toward his older companion with a furrowed brow. ”Who is this Sereth, that he thinks the arachne ferals are so easy to cull?”

The older warrior gave him a sharp, warning glare. ”Fool.”

The younger guard frowned. ”What?”

The older warrior lowered his voice to a harsh whisper. ”Fifteen years ago, Sereth was one of the most lethal swordblades among all the clans.”

The younger warrior’s eyes widened in sudden recognition. ”Sereth of House Vel’drin?”

”Yes.” The older warrior glanced down the dark passage where the traveler and his ward had vanished. ”Your clan only recently moved to the outer fringe. You would not know the old stories.”

”What happened to him?”

The older warrior was silent for a long moment. ”There are many stories.”

”Which one is true?”

The older warrior’s gaze narrowed. ”The one that says he was defeated by a human.”

The younger warrior stared at him in disbelief. ”A human defeated Sereth?”

”So the tale goes.” The veteran looked deeper into the tunnel. ”The human’s name was Cullum Macrae.”

”And what happened to Sereth after that?”

”He vanished from the clans without a word.” The older warrior turned back toward his concealed post. ”No one truly knows why.”

The younger guard glanced once more into the absolute blackness of the inner tunnel. ”And now he returns leading a human child.”

The older warrior fixed him with a stern look. ”That is not our concern.” He turned toward the deeper stairwell. ”I need to report to the captain. Sereth has returned.”

The younger warrior watched him disappear into the shadows before returning to his silent vigil. Neither of them knew the true identity of the human child walking through their halls.

Deeper inside the mountain, Caius continued following Sereth, entirely unaware that his father’s name had just been spoken within these ancient stone walls.

The further they traveled, the more signs of habitation emerged from the dark. Narrow side passages branched away from the main tunnel, some descending steeply into the mountain’s fiery depths while others were sealed behind heavy, rune-etched stone doors. Faint blue lights pulsed from crystals embedded in the rock, providing just enough illumination for dark elf eyes to navigate the complex labyrinth.

Caius activated his Far Sight.

The visual landscape of the tunnel instantly shifted. The passage that had appeared empty to ordinary eyes suddenly revealed subtle traces of movement.

One. Two. Three.

More figures materialized within his enhanced vision. Dark elves. They were positioned strategically throughout the entranceway, concealed entirely within the natural shadows and alcoves of the cave. Some stood rigidly against the cold walls, while others crouched on high ledges above.

Caius mentally tallied them. Twenty. At least twenty armed dark elves guarded this single passage. Their weapons were already gripped in their hands, their bodies motionless. They had not spoken, nor had they moved. They had simply watched.

Caius slowly deactivated his Far Sight and continued following Sereth into the heart of the mountain.

He understood the truth now. They had not been granted entry because they were expected guests. They had been allowed to pass solely because Sereth’s name commanded authority.

Somewhere beyond the darkness lay the hidden domain of House Vel’drin. Yet far beneath those same frozen roots, deeper than any road trodden by the dark elves, another dark power stirred within the permafrost.

The dark elves called them arachne. They were no ordinary beasts.

Deep beneath the jagged peaks of the mountain range, vast networks of crystalline web stretched through solid granite and frozen earth. These webs pulsed with strange psionic signals through the pitch-black tunnels, binding distant creatures into a unified hive mind. At the heart of the deepest abyss rested the creature the dark elves feared most: the arachne queen mother, an enormous queen encased in thick ice and jagged black chitin.

Thousands of abominations answered her silent call. Some were massive brutes capable of shattering fortified stone barricades, while others were sleek predators designed to stalk prey silently across sheer walls and ceilings.

Among them were the arachne feral war-packs that prowled the outer territories. A towering Skein-Brute often commanded several Shadow-Thread Stalkers, extending the hive’s awareness deep into the peripheral tunnels. If one beast spotted an interloper, every creature connected to the web shared that exact sight.

For generations, the dark elves had waged a brutal war against these horrors for control of the mountain’s geothermal depths.

Now, after fifteen years of exile, Sereth had returned. And he had brought a human child with him.

Neither of them yet knew what horrors waited for them in the deep dark below.
