CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

From the shadowed mouth of the cavern, Isilra and her three squadmates watched the slaughter unfold. They had been ordered to observe, but nothing in their centuries of underground warfare could have prepared them for this scale of carnage.

Out in the open clearing, Caius stood planted with his warbow drawn, his eyes locked onto the surging wave of arachne. These weren’t the small, scouting pests from the outer tunnels; these were heavily armored brutes, their bulbous bodies encased in thick, overlapping black chitin that glistened with a sickening, oily sheen.

Snap.

The bowstring sang. An arrow whipped across the cavern, a streak of lethal intent that slammed into the forward-rushing monster.

The shaft didn’t merely pierce the armor; it blew clean through the beast’s eye socket with a sickening crunch, driving deep into its brain. Thick, acidic green-black ichor burst from the wound in a pressurized geyser, sizzling as it hit the stone floor. The massive spider shrieked, its eight legs thrashing wildly before it collapsed into a twitching heap of broken limbs.

Caius didn’t hesitate. His fingers already gripped another shaft.

Release.

Another arachne staggered, its throat-plate shattered, dark fluid pooling in the dust.

Release.

A third dropped mid-stride, its momentum sending it skidding across the blood-slicked rock, leaving a dark, viscous trail in its wake.

The human boy was not shooting blind. Every single arrow was a masterclass in anatomical destruction, tracking the unpredictable shifts of the horde and landing precisely where the armor thinned.

Isilra stared, her breath hitching in her throat. ”He isn’t missing.”

The younger warrior beside her gripped his weapon so tightly his knuckles turned white, his gaze glued to the carnage. ”Not once.”

The older veteran remained silent, his eyes wide as he watched the boy effortlessly empty quiver after quiver into the surging tide of flesh.

Then their attention snapped toward Sereth.

The veteran had already plunged into the heart of the swarm. A deep, abyssal blue aura raged around him like a howling gale, shielding him from the snapping jaws and razor-sharp limbs. His curved blade didn’t just cut; it tore through the horde with terrifying, industrialized efficiency.

A sweep of his sword sheared off three thick, hairy legs from a charging beast, sending it crashing sideways in a spray of dark blood and flying chitin. As another arachne lunged from above, Sereth spun, his blade bisecting the creature vertically. Viscera, tangled organs, and torrents of dark gore spilled across the stone, instantly painting the cavern floor in a horrific mosaic.

He moved through the sea of monsters not as a lone swordsman fighting for his life, but as a scythe through ripe wheat—except the wheat shrieked, bled, and fought back. Limbs flew, carapaces shattered into jagged shrapnel, and the air filled with the choking, copper stench of fresh blood and burning acidic ichor.

The younger dark elf swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly. ”Senior Sereth...”

”Watch,” the older veteran commanded, his tone iron-clad.

Caius’s arrows finally ran dry. The extra quiver Sereth had given him was completely emptied, the leather straps dangling loose against his hip.

Caius lowered the warbow. The dark elves expected him to retreat, to fall back behind the defensive lines.

Instead, he put his warbow inside his storage ring, his hands flashing to his waist.

Steel hissed from leather. Twin short swords materialized in his grips, catching the dim cavern light.

He didn’t charge headlong into the center of the meat-grinder like Sereth. Instead, he slipped along the blood-soaked flank of the swarm, where the arachne were disorganized and overextended.

Then he moved.

His style was entirely different from Sereth’s brutal, overwhelming dominance. It was fluid, surgical, and terrifyingly fast. Caius utilized the Flow Step, but enhanced it far beyond a basic drill—every motion blended seamlessly into the next, his form blurring as he danced through the chaotic melee.

An arachne whipped its heavy tail-end toward him. Caius dropped low, sliding across the slick, gore-covered stone. As he passed beneath the creature’s guard, his left blade slashed upward, opening a massive, ragged gash across its soft underbelly. Warm, reeking entrails spilled out into the dirt. Before the beast could even register the fatal blow, his right blade severed its primary nerve cluster at the neck.

He didn’t stop. A second spider lunged, snapping its massive mandibles. Caius vanished in a blur of motion, reappearing directly behind its blind spot. Both swords crossed in a clean, blinding X-shape, shearing clean through the thick joints of its thorax. The creature dropped dead before it could even hit the ground.

As he moved, a faint, wispy veil of black mist began to cling to his skin, swirling around his blades like smoke. It was the residue of the Black Flame, radiating an oppressive, chilling pressure that made the nearby arachne recoil in primal terror.

Isilra’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. ”He’s using the Flow Step...”

”That’s impossible,” the younger warrior breathed. ”That’s just a basic movement drill taught to novices!”

”Look at him,” Isilra whispered, watching the black mist trail behind the boy’s flashing steel. ”He isn’t just moving. He’s rewriting it.”

The older warrior said nothing, transfixed by the terrifying grace of the human boy carving his way through a battlefield that should have crushed him in seconds.

Beside them, the younger warrior took an involuntary step forward, raising his bow. ”We have to help them. There are too many—”

The older veteran caught his arm with a bruising grip, yanking him back. ”No.”

”They’re going to be overwhelmed!”

”Our orders are to observe,” the veteran growled, his eyes fixed on the slaughter. ”We do not interfere unless commanded.”

Reluctantly, the younger warrior lowered his weapon, his chest heaving as he watched the human and the veteran tear through the swarm.

The battle was rapidly shifting from a desperate siege into a rout. Sereth’s blue tempest cleared the center, Caius systematically dismantled the flanks, and finally, the defenders within the tavern could no longer hold back. Heavy wooden doors burst open, and a tide of dark elf warriors poured out onto the platforms and the cavern floor, joining the fray with battle cries that echoed off the stone.

Then, a new figure stepped out from the tavern’s threshold, drawing Isilra’s immediate attention.

He was old. Deep, jagged scars crisscrossed his weathered face, disappearing beneath heavy leather armor. His hair was stark white, and his movements lacked the explosive, raw speed of the younger warriors.

Yet there was a terrifying lethality in his unhurried stride.

He held a long, gleaming saber in his right hand and a reverse-grip dagger in his left. As he waded into the remaining swarm, he didn’t waste an ounce of energy. The saber handled sweeping, decapitating arcs, while the dagger remained tucked close to his chest, parrying lunging fangs and instantly sliding into the soft joints of any creature that got too close.

Isilra recognized the fighting style instantly. ”The tavern keeper...”

The retired assassin moved with the ghost-like precision of a shadow that had spent a lifetime killing things in the dark.

Slowly, the three focal points of the battle converged. Sereth held the center with his roaring blue aura; Caius worked the left flank, his twin blades dripping with dark ichor and black flame; and the old assassin held the right, stacking piles of twitching, headless arachne in his wake.

The swarm broke. The remaining spiders began to scramble backward, turning tail and fleeing back into the dark tunnels from whence they came.

The defenders cheered, lowering their bloodied weapons. The worst was over.

Then, a sound cut through the celebration.

It wasn’t a roar. It was a piercing, razor-sharp shriek that rattled the very bedrock of the mountain. The sound was so physically oppressive that several of the dark elf warriors dropped their weapons, clutching their ears as blood trickled from their noses.

Every combatant froze.

Sereth stopped mid-swing, his blue aura flickering. Caius lowered his blades, his breath pluming in the suddenly chilled air.

Even the fleeing arachne stopped their retreat. Instead of scattering further into the dark, they turned around, crowding protectively around the deeper tunnel openings as if awaiting a master.

Sereth’s gaze locked onto the absolute blackness at the far end of the cavern.

The ground groaned. Massive, rhythmic impacts shuddered through the stone, each step heavier than a falling boulder.

Out of the darkness, something colossal stepped into the dim light.

Eight towering legs, thick as ancient tree trunks and spiked with jagged black chitin, clicked against the stone. Its massive, bulbous abdomen was marked with pale, glowing patterns, and its upper torso rose higher than any ordinary monster they had faced.

It was young, yet it stood nearly fifteen feet tall—a towering nightmare of muscle, venom, and armored plates.

The Queen Mother had arrived.

Caius tilted his head back, staring up at the towering monstrosity as its dozens of unblinking, multifaceted eyes locked directly onto them.

The remaining arachne swarmed around its base, hissing and clicking their mandibles, instantly emboldened by her presence. The retreat was over.

Sereth shifted his grip on his curved blade, his expression turning into absolute stone.

Caius raised his blood-soaked short swords, the black flame flaring a fraction brighter along the edges of the steel.

To their right, the old assassin lowered his saber and dagger into a lethal, ready stance. Behind them, nearly twenty dark elf survivors formed a tight, desperate line, raising their weapons once more.

For the first time since the slaughter began, they weren’t hunting the swarm anymore.

They were standing before its heart.

The young Queen Mother reared back on its hind legs, spreading its massive front limbs, and let out another earth-shaking shriek.

The true battle was about to begin.
