CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The abode prepared for Caius was modest by the grand standards he had imagined for a sovereign dark elf house.

It was a compact dwelling carved directly into the dark granite of the cavern, consisting of a single sleeping chamber, a simple dining area, and a small training courtyard enclosed by smooth rock walls. High above the courtyard, clusters of naturally glowing blue crystals had been embedded into the ceiling vault, casting a cool, ambient illumination over the paved stone floor.

It was comfortable enough, but Caius quickly learned that he was a prisoner in all but name.

Two elite Vel’drin warriors stood permanently outside the heavy wooden entrance, positioned on either side of the archway with their hands resting on spear shafts. Their orders were absolute: no one was permitted to enter or leave the quarters without direct authorization from the clan head or the patriarch.

The guards were sentinels, but they were also intelligence gatherers. Their task was not merely to prevent escape, but to continuously observe the human boy, monitor his energy output, record his habits, and report anything unusual to their superiors.

Old Bones, however, was entirely exempt from the restriction. The retired assassin came and went as he pleased, unbothered by the guards. He spent most of his time lounging inside the abode, sleeping soundly, eating cold meat, or sitting in absolute silence against the stone wall with his long saber resting across his lap.

Caius had five days to remain inside the compound before he would be escorted to the Absolute Moon Palace to stand at Sereth’s trial.

On the first morning, Caius was served a simple dark elf meal. The bread was dense and dark, baked from ground subterranean tubers and cavern fungus. It possessed a firm texture with a faint, surprising sweetness beneath its earthy flavor, making it exceptionally filling.

Beside the bread sat a steaming wooden cup filled with a dark green liquid. Caius lifted the vessel and inhaled the vapor. The scent was sharp and herbal, resembling strong green tea but carrying a far more potent, medicinal edge.

He took a careful sip. Bitter, astringent notes immediately coated his tongue, clearing his sinuses and sending a subtle, invigorating spark through his throat meridians.

Caius paused, letting the liquid settle, then took another long drink. He found he genuinely enjoyed it. There was something clean and stabilizing about the bitter flavor, especially after spending weeks consuming dry rations on the road.

Old Bones watched him drain the cup from across the room, but the old assassin offered no comment.

After finishing his meal, Caius stepped out into the enclosed courtyard. He drew his two shortswords from their sheaths across his back. The Warden rested in his left, off-hand grip, while The Executioner sat firmly in his dominant right hand.

Caius settled his feet into a balanced, shoulder-width stance, lowered his center of gravity, and began his daily forms.

The fundamental movements of the Umbral Twin-Edge style had already become second nature to his muscle memory. The martial art was built around calculated asymmetry: one blade was dedicated to jamming, trapping, and disrupting the enemy’s guard, while the second blade delivered the lethal thrust. Every technique was designed to flow fluidly into the next, using the opponent’s kinetic momentum rather than opposing it directly.

Caius practiced the Horizon Cast first, rehearsing the deceptive, low-sweeping motion of his off-hand blade to draw an imaginary block before transitioning into a sharp forward drive with his main weapon.

Next came Shadow Bind. He visualized an incoming vertical strike, channeling a brief pulse of black mana through his forearm conduits into The Warden. His off-hand blade swept up to intercept and redirect the strike while his feet pivoted, shifting his entire body into his opponent’s blind angle.

Finally, he executed Twin Arc, moving both blades in a cross-cutting motion where one blade pinned the target’s weapon while the second carved through the opening.

Caius repeated the sequence again and again. The quiet courtyard filled with the crisp, rhythmic hum of steel slicing through the air as he refined his posture and regulated his breathing.

Old Bones lay propped against the far courtyard wall with his eyes closed. After several flawless repetitions, one of the old man’s bloodshot eyes cracked open, watching the boy’s execution.

Hmm, the old assassin noted silently. He has mastered the baseline forms flawlessly.

Caius kept moving, but as his body warmed up, he began experimenting. He integrated his cultivation movement art directly into the sword forms.

His body suddenly accelerated in a blur of motion. Channeling a compressed burst of black mana into his leg meridians, he executed a short-range Vel’drin Step, exploding forward across the stone floor. The moment his feet touched the ground, he seamlessly flowed into Shadow Bind, trapping the air before delivering a rapid Twin Arc.

The transition was unscripted, blending high-speed displacement with dark elf assassination forms. His movement became unpredictable and difficult to track.

Old Bones’s eye opened completely. That sudden modification caught his interest.

The old assassin slowly sat up, resting his knuckles on the stone floor. Caius brought his blades to a halt when he noticed the movement.

Old Bones gestured lazily with his chin toward a wooden training rack set against the courtyard wall. ”Choose a weapon.”

Caius glanced at the rack, which held various blunted practice weapons.

Old Bones stood up, stretched his stiff joints with a series of loud pops, and walked over to the stand. He picked up a solid oak wooden sword and a heavy wooden practice knife.

He turned toward Caius. ”Take whatever you want.”

Caius walked to the rack, holstered his steel blades, and selected a matching wooden sword and wooden knife.

The two stood facing each other across the small stone courtyard.

The old assassin’s posture was completely relaxed, almost careless. There was no visible tension in his narrow shoulders and no outward flare of mana from his skin. His wooden sword hung loosely at his right side, while the wooden knife sat low in his left hand.

Caius raised his practice weapons, entering a tight defensive guard.

Old Bones looked at him calmly. ”Attack.”

Caius exploded forward. Utilizing the Vel’drin Step, he surged into range, sweeping his primary wooden blade toward Old Bones’s flank while positioning his wooden knife to catch any incoming counter-strike.

Before his sword could complete its arc, the old assassin simply vanished from the line of attack.

Caius’s eyes widened. His strike hit empty air, and before he could process the shift, a blunt impact slammed viciously into his left floating ribs.

Pain exploded through his side, knocking the breath from his lungs. He stumbled three steps forward, barely keeping his footing.

Old Bones had slipped behind his blind spot with effortless efficiency, tapping him hard with the wooden knife.

Caius gritted his teeth, his side throbbing with a dull ache. He forced his lungs to take in air, ignoring the pain, and turned back to face his mentor. He reset his guard.

Deciding to rely on his sensory arts, Caius activated Far Sight.

His perception shifted instantly as black mana surged into his optic nerves. He attempted to peer into Old Bones’s body to read his lower dantian and track the flow of internal energy through his meridians.

To his shock, he saw almost nothing. The mana around Old Bones’s core was a shifting, chaotic blur, distorted like static on an unaligned mirror.

Caius narrowed his eyes and activated Inner Sight, pushing more energy into his perception to force a clear read. The result was no better. Old Bones was deliberately scrambling his external mana signature, a high-level assassin technique that rendered his internal movements completely unreadable.

Caius tried to anticipate the old man’s next step, but he could not read a single movement thread.

Old Bones let out a quiet, gravelly chuckle. ”Can’t read my mana flow?”

Caius froze, realization settling in. He had never encountered a warrior whose internal energy was so thoroughly masked.

Old Bones lowered his wooden sword slightly. ”Again.”

Caius steadied his stance, but as he regrouped, his awareness drifted toward his upper Crown Point at the apex of his head.

He remembered the vast inner sea, the ancient stone temple, and the Arachne Thread Art knowledge he had assimilated into his Crown Core’s first socket.

Caius concentrated his willpower, reaching deep into his Crown Point.

Something dormant answered his call.

For a brief, blinding instant, his spiritual perception transformed. He did not see standard elemental mana flows; instead, translucent, thread-like lines of pure intent manifested across his field of vision.

He saw several faint threads tracing through the air between them, connecting directly to key points on Old Bones’s body, revealing the potential trajectories of the old man’s next physical movement.

Caius saw one thread near Old Bones’s right shoulder twitch. He knew instantly where the blow was aimed.

However, the moment Caius attempted to maintain that level of spiritual sight, an immense, terrifying drain struck his mind. His Crown Core burned through his mental energy in an instant.

His vision blurred violently, his head throbbed as if pierced by an iron needle, and his knees buckled.

Caius dropped to the stone floor, catching himself with his left hand as his breath came in ragged, heavy gasps. The spiritual threads vanished, and the connection to his Crown Core snapped shut.

He shook his head, clearing the dark spots swimming in his vision. My mental foundation is still too weak, he realized. I cannot sustain the Crown Core’s sensory sight in active combat yet.

Old Bones stood over him, looking down with a curious expression. ”Are you all right?”

Caius forced himself back onto his feet, leaning on his wooden sword until his legs stabilized. ”Yes.”

He raised his guard once again.

Old Bones stared at him for a long moment, searching the boy’s exhausted face. Then a faint, dangerous smile touched the corners of his thin lips. ”Good.”

Caius locked his focus on the old assassin’s upper body.

Old Bones attacked.

This time, as the old man moved, Caius caught a microscopic split-second flash of an intent thread snapping straight toward his left collarbone. He did not try to hold the spiritual vision, relying entirely on the brief impulse.

Caius shifted his weight and thrust his wooden sword upward to intercept.

THOCK!

The wooden weapons collided in a sharp, sudden crack. Caius successfully blocked the strike.

Old Bones’s eyes widened slightly in genuine surprise. Without pausing, the old assassin instantly altered the angle of his attack, whipping his wooden knife toward Caius’s ribs.

Caius pivoted, dragging his wooden knife across to parry the strike.

CLACK!

Another attack came instantly from the right. Caius moved aside, letting the wood graze his tunic.

Old Bones accelerated his pace, his wooden weapons turning into a blur of dark strikes. Caius could no longer see every movement, but whenever a brief flash of intent registered, he adjusted his position just enough to survive.

He blocked one. Parried another.

On the third exchange, an attack slipped past his guard. The wooden blade slammed heavily into Caius’s shoulder, shooting a sharp bolt of pain down his arm.

Caius gritted his teeth and held his ground.

Old Bones showed no mercy, driving forward with relentless pressure. Another hard blow struck Caius’s thigh, followed by a jab to his chest that made him stagger back two steps.

Caius gasped for air, his vision swimming, but he raised his weapons again.

”Pain is our best teacher,” Old Bones called out, his voice sharp as he stepped forward once more. ”Remember every strike!”

The wooden sword came sweeping in from the left. Caius focused on the subtle shift of intent, planted his feet, and threw himself into the parry.

Outside the heavy wooden entrance of the abode, the two elite Vel’drin guards remained standing at their posts, their spear shafts held tight.

They could hear every heavy impact echoing through the stone walls.

THOCK. CLACK. THUD.

Every harsh impact was accompanied by the sound of heavy breathing, shuffling boots, and suppressed groans of pain.

The younger guard shifted his eyes toward his partner, keeping his head completely still. Neither spoke a word, but the concern in their eyes was obvious.

They had been ordered to watch the human boy and evaluate his capabilities. They had certainly not expected to listen to him receive an absolute, uninterrupted beating from a legendary dark elf assassin inside the courtyard.

Another heavy, bone-jarring impact echoed through the heavy door, followed by the sound of a body hitting the stone floor, only to scramble back up a second later.

The younger guard winced slightly, his fingers tightening on his spear. He almost felt a flicker of sympathy for the human boy.

Almost.

Inside the courtyard, the sound of splintering wood and striking limbs continued long into the afternoon. And no matter how many times he was struck down, Caius refused to stay on the ground.
