CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

The journey toward the heart of the dark elf territories continued beneath the mountains.

For several days, Caius and Sereth traveled with the Shadowblades and the warriors accompanying them. The deeper they went, the more the natural tunnels gave way to passages shaped by generations of dark elf habitation. Ancient roads had been carved through the stone, wide enough for entire formations of warriors to march through, while enormous caverns served as crossroads connecting the territories of the great noble houses.

Eventually, they reached one of the largest crossroads Caius had ever seen. The cavern stretched farther than his eyes could follow. Massive stone pillars rose from the ground, each carved with the symbols of different noble houses. Great passages opened between them, disappearing into the darkness in different directions.

One road led toward the heart of Clan Vel’drin. Others led toward the territories of the other noble houses.

The Shadowblades and the warriors accompanying them slowed as they reached the crossroads. Sereth was given a short period of privacy with Caius before they continued.

They moved into a secluded chamber carved into the cavern wall. The distant sounds of warriors and travelers faded behind them until only the quiet of the stone remained.

Caius noticed that Sereth had become unusually quiet. The veteran warrior had remained composed since the arrival of the Shadowblades, but Caius could sense that the coming summons weighed heavily upon him.

Sereth finally turned toward him. ”There is something I must teach you.”

Caius straightened. ”My secret art?”

Caius looked at him with interest. ”You have a secret art?”

”I have been a scout, a pathfinder, and an assassin for hundreds of years.” Sereth sat down. ”During that time, I developed an art that was never formally taught within the clan.”

He looked at Caius’s weapons. ”It was built from what I learned in the field. It is meant for situations where a swordsman must fight in confined spaces, against opponents who are stronger, faster, or more numerous.”

Caius listened carefully. ”What kind of art is it?”

”A dual-blade art.” Sereth studied him for a moment. ”But you will not learn it the way you learned your previous techniques.”

Caius tilted his head.

Sereth extended his hand. ”Sit.”

Caius sat opposite him. ”Close your eyes.”

Caius obeyed. Sereth placed two fingers against his forehead. Mana began to flow.

It was different from ordinary instruction. Sereth did not explain the movements first. Instead, he allowed his mana to enter Caius’s consciousness, carrying the memory of the art with it.

Caius suddenly felt as though another world had opened inside his mind. He saw a longsword. Then a shortsword. He saw the stance required to wield them together, the different positions of the hands, the distribution of weight, and the way the body shifted when moving between offense and defense.

Then the first form appeared. Shadow Cross.

Caius saw the longsword sweeping outward, creating an outer guard that controlled the opponent’s weapon. The longer blade occupied space and forced the enemy’s attack onto a predictable line. The wielder then stepped inside. The shortsword moved beneath the bind. A quick thrust.

The vision changed. The second form appeared. Split-Stream Cadence.

The longsword moved with deliberate, sweeping cuts while the shortsword attacked with a completely different rhythm. One weapon created pressure while the other exploited the openings that pressure produced.

Then came the third. Twin Meridian Cut.

The wielder stepped beyond the opponent’s center line. The shortsword hooked and dragged the enemy’s weapon or shield downward. The chest opened. The longsword followed. A decisive horizontal strike.

The three forms flowed through Caius’s consciousness. Not as written instructions. Not as spoken explanations. As movement. As timing. As body positioning. As instinct waiting to be refined through practice.

The art had been built from hundreds of years of Sereth’s experience as a scout, pathfinder, and assassin, and the mana imprint carried more than the techniques themselves. Caius could sense the principles behind the movements, the subtle changes in balance, the distances at which each weapon became useful, and the transitions that allowed one form to flow into another.

Then the transmission ended. Sereth slowly withdrew his hand.

Caius opened his eyes. For several moments, he remained still. The art was already inside his consciousness.

Sereth watched him. ”The imprint gives you the forms.”

Caius looked at him. ”But it does not give you mastery.”

Caius nodded.

Sereth began explaining the first form. ”Shadow Cross is built around control. The longsword establishes the outer guard and forces the opponent’s weapon onto a line you can manage. You are not merely blocking. You are controlling where their weapon can go.”

He demonstrated the movement slowly. ”Once the weapon is bound, you step inside their reach and bring the shortsword beneath it. That is where the kill comes from.”

Caius followed the movement carefully. ”But there is a weakness.”

Sereth lowered his sword. ”If the opponent is strong enough to overpower the bind, you lose the control the form depends upon. If they are fast enough to withdraw before you step inside, the shortsword has nothing to exploit.”

Caius nodded. ”So I should not force it.”

”Exactly.” Sereth moved to the second form. ”Split-Stream Cadence is different.”

His longsword moved slowly through a broad sweeping cut. ”The longsword creates pressure. Its movements should be large enough to draw the opponent’s attention and force their guard to react.”

Then his other hand moved sharply. ”The shortsword does the opposite. It remains fast and compact, attacking the openings below while the opponent is still dealing with the longsword.”

Caius watched closely. ”The two weapons must never feel synchronized.”

Sereth looked at him. ”If both move with the same rhythm, the opponent will begin reading them as one attack. The entire purpose of this form is to make your opponent divide their attention.”

Caius considered the principle. ”What is its weakness?”

”Your own impatience.” Sereth’s answer came immediately. ”Most swordsmen naturally want both hands to move together. You must resist that instinct. The longsword must remain deliberate while the shortsword changes tempo.”

He paused. ”If you lose that separation, the form becomes predictable.”

Sereth then explained the final technique. ”Twin Meridian Cut is the execution form.”

His movements became slower as he demonstrated the sequence. ”You step past the opponent’s center line while the shortsword hooks their weapon or shield and pulls it downward. The movement creates the opening.”

His longsword followed the imagined line. ”The longsword finishes the attack.”

Caius understood immediately. The first blade did not kill. It created the condition for the second.

”But this form has the greatest risk.” Sereth lowered his weapon. ”If the shortsword fails to control the enemy’s weapon, you have already committed your body forward. Against a stronger opponent, that mistake can get you killed.”

Caius nodded.

Sereth continued explaining the relationship between the three forms. Shadow Cross could be used to establish control and force the opponent into a predictable position. Split-Stream Cadence could then break the rhythm of an opponent who had begun adapting to the longsword. Twin Meridian Cut could finish the fight once the defensive structure had been compromised.

But Sereth made one thing clear. ”The forms are not a sequence that must always be followed.”

Caius listened. ”You may begin with Shadow Cross and abandon it halfway through. You may use the footwork of Twin Meridian Cut without completing the strike. You may use the shortsword to defend while the longsword attacks.”

Sereth’s eyes narrowed. ”Never become a prisoner of your own technique.”

Caius remained silent.

”These forms are tools. They give you possibilities. They do not dictate what you must do.” Sereth looked toward the passage outside. ”You have already learned how to adapt your movement with Flow Step. Combine that discipline with this art, but do not allow one technique to interfere with the other.”

Caius looked down at his hands. ”How long will it take to master?”

Sereth gave him a faint smile. ”Years.”

Caius frowned. ”Perhaps decades.”

He allowed the words to settle before continuing. ”But you do not have decades.”

Caius looked at him. ”Then I will practice until I can use it.”

”Not occasionally.” Sereth’s voice became firm. ”Every day.”

Caius nodded. ”Every day.”

”Practice the footwork even when you do not have your swords. Practice changing the rhythm of your hands. Practice making one weapon slow while the other remains fast. Your body must learn the difference until it becomes natural.”

Caius nodded again.

Sereth looked directly into his eyes. ”And when you finally think you have mastered it, find someone who can defeat you with it.”

Caius raised an eyebrow. ”Why?”

”Because that is how you discover its weaknesses.” A faint smile appeared on Sereth’s face. ”Every art has weaknesses. The best swordsman is not the one who believes his art has none. It is the one who knows exactly where they are.”

The room became quiet. Then Sereth spoke again. ”Use this as you will.”

Caius looked at him. ”If the day comes when you need to escape after you reach sixteen, use everything I have taught you.”

Caius frowned. ”Why would I flee?”

Sereth said nothing.

Caius looked directly at him. ”You have been my mentor since my father died.” His voice was quiet but firm. ”Before I reach sixteen, I will become stronger. And I will find a way to free you.”

For several moments, Sereth remained silent. Something passed through his eyes, but Caius could not understand it. Finally, Sereth looked away. ”Come.”

Caius stood. They stepped out of the chamber together.

The enormous crossroads awaited them, its many roads disappearing into the darkness toward the territories of the great noble houses. One road led toward Clan Vel’drin. Beyond it waited the clan’s territory. And somewhere farther still waited the Absolute Moon.

Caius walked beside Sereth, carrying the knowledge of another secret art within his consciousness. The techniques had been given to him in an instant, but Sereth had made the truth clear. Receiving an art was not the same as mastering it.

Caius would have to practice. Every day. Until the movements ceased to be techniques he remembered and became movements his body could perform without thought. Only then would the secret art of Sereth Vel’drin truly belong to him.
