The feast raged late into the night... a grand, triumphant celebration that marked the end of the bloody siege and prepared the Veynar clan for the next phase: the dawn march to claim the territories of the coalition.

Sol remained near the edge of the light, cup in hand, watching.

Veylara did not linger long after their brief exchange. Duty still clung to her even in celebration; she moved back into the crowd to speak with the remaining elders who had choose to stay back to defend, instead of joining the army to watch the spectacle, Veylara clasped the shoulders of surviving warriors, and ensure that the families of the fallen were not left isolated in their grief.

Zephyra drifted with her for a time before settling near one of the larger fires, where a group of younger Veynar listened quietly as she spoke of the ancestors and the weight of survival.

That left Sol with Kira and Zeyra once more.

Kira had grown quieter as the night wore on. The earlier brightness in her expression had softened into something more thoughtful. She stood close enough that her arm occasionally brushed his, as if the contact itself was a reminder that the nightmare had truly ended.

”They’re happier than I’ve seen them in years,” she said softly, eyes on the dancers. ”Even with everything we lost.”

”That’s the point of nights like this,” Zeyra replied. She took another drink from her cup, then added in a lower voice, ”If we only mourned, the dead would be the only ones left with a voice.”

Sol glanced between them. The firelight caught the faint sheen of drying tears at the corner of Kira’s eye and the rare openness in Zeyra’s usually guarded face. For a moment, none of them spoke. The drums filled the space instead, steady and insistent.

Eventually, the intensity of the celebration began to ease.

Some of the older warriors claimed seats near the fires and simply drank in silence. Children were gathered up and carried toward the longhouses, their energy finally spent.

Couples drifted away into the darker edges of the settlement.

The roar of the crowd softened into a living murmur, still warm, still present, but no longer overwhelming.

Sol finished what remained of his drink and set the empty cup on the edge of a nearby table.

”We should rest,” he said. ”Tomorrow will come whether we’re ready for it or not.”

Kira nodded almost immediately. Zeyra held his gaze for a second longer, then gave a small, accepting tilt of her head.

Together, the three of them turned away from the heart of the plaza.

As they walked toward the quieter paths leading to the feline spire that had been already prepared for them, the sound of the drums followed at their backs... slower now, like a heartbeat settling after a long and brutal race. Behind them, the Veynar continued to claim the night in fire and voice.

...

The path away from the plaza was quieter than the heart of the celebration, though the deep pulse of the drums still reached them in muted waves.

Torches fixed along the wooden walkways cast long, swaying shadows as Sol, Kira, and Zeyra walked side by side.

The night air had grown colder with the full descent of darkness, carrying the mingled scents of woodsmoke, roasted meat, and the clean sharpness of the forests beyond the settlement walls.

None of them spoke at first.

There was no need. The silence between them was comfortable, shaped by everything they had already shared... the blood of the battlefield, the fear by the stream, the weight of the tribe’s roaring gratitude, and the quieter understanding that had settled over them since.

Kira walked close enough that her shoulder occasionally brushed Sol’s arm.

Zeyra kept pace on his other side, her usual sharp awareness softened by the lateness of the hour and the lingering warmth of the fermented drink.

When they reached the house prepared for Sol in Feline spire, instead of going to their places both of the girls curtly stood besides him, Sol didn’t mind and pushed the door open and stepped in first.

The interior was much as he had left a few days ago : thick furs layered over the wooden platform, the faint scent of dried lavender still clinging to the blankets.

He unbuckled the scabbard and set the weapon within easy reach, then sat down on the edge of the furs to remove his shoes.

The simple actions felt heavier than they should have, as if the full weight of the last two days was only now settling into his bones.

Kira entered behind him and hesitated only a moment before crossing the small space.

She sat close, close enough that her knee rested lightly against his. Zeyra followed last, opening the windows to allow the night breeze roam in before taking her place on Sol’s other side.

For a while they simply sat there in the dim light that filtered through the canvas.

”Today still doesn’t feel entirely real,” Kira said at last, her voice quiet. ”This morning we were marching home with prisoners. This afternoon Mother was walking from door to door. And tonight... the whole tribe is singing.”

”It’s real,” Zeyra replied. She leaned back on one hand, eyes half-lidded. ”The dead are still dead. The prisoners are still bound. And tomorrow the work starts again. But tonight is real too.”

Sol listened to them both, his crimson eyes reflecting the faint light. The strange emptiness in his head... the place where all the harvested soul power had vanished... remained quiet for now.

Whatever it was, it had given him no further sign since the end of the battle. He set the question aside once more. There would be time later.

”Get some sleep,” he said eventually. ”Both of you. The march to other tribes won’t wait for exhaustion.”

Kira nodded and shifted closer without asking, settling against his left side and pulling one of the heavier furs over them both.

After a brief pause, Zeyra did the same on his right, her movements more measured but no less certain. The combined warmth of their bodies quickly cut through the night chill.

Sol let out a slow breath and rested his head back against the layered furs. Outside, the distant drums continued for a while longer, then gradually softened as the celebration finally began to ebb.

Inside the house, the three of them lay together in the dark, the steady rhythm of shared breathing slowly evening out.
