Music filled the air... the heavy, rhythmic thumping of skin drums, and the loud, energetic laughter of warriors drinking away the nightmare of battle.

The Veynar people ate, drank, and danced around the roaring flames, celebrating not just a victory, but the birth of a new era where their clan would no longer live as hunted prey.

This had always been the way of the Veynar.

In the Great Orrath, death was not an interruption of life... it was one of its oldest laws. Every hunter who stepped beyond the settlement walls understood that the forest did not promise return.

Every warrior who lifted a spear knew that the ancestors’ road was never far away. Because of this, the tribe had long refused to let grief become a quiet, private thing that hollowed out the living from within.

Despite the sadness and the empty places at many tables, the celebrations were not to be stopped.

It was an ancient tradition of the tribe... a deliberate act of defiance against despair. To fall silent after loss, to let the fires die and the voices grow quiet, was considered a second death: the death of meaning.

If the living stopped living, then the fallen had truly died for nothing. So the Veynar did the opposite. They feasted. They drank. They raised their voices beneath the open sky so that the souls of the fallen would hear them and know their sacrifice had not been in vain.

The roaring fires were more than light and warmth. They were signals sent upward into the dark, messages of continuity.

The laughter was not cruelty or forgetfulness... it was proof that the heart of the tribe still beat. Even the dancing, rough and unrestrained, carried a kind of sacred stubbornness: We are still here. We still draw breath. We still choose to face the night together.

At the same time, the celebration was also an act of mercy toward the living.

The roaring fires and the shared drink were meant to ease the sharpest edge of grief for the families left behind.

Mourning was not denied or hidden; it was simply not allowed to stand alone.

On this night, sorrow was given a place beside pride, memory, and the fierce relief of survival.

A widow could weep and still accept a cup of fermented juice.

A father who had lost his son could stand among the drums and feel, if only for a few hours, that the weight on his chest was shared by the entire tribe.

In this way, the Veynar refused to let death have the final word.

They answered it with fire, with voices, with the stubborn continuation of life... so that both the dead and the living would know the same truth:

THE TRIBE HAS LIVED AND WILL CONTINUE SO.

As the three great bonfires roared higher into the night, Sol remained near the edge of the central plaza, half in shadow, half in the warm wash of firelight.

He had accepted a heavy wooden cup of fermented mountain juice when it was pressed into his hands, but he drank sparingly.

The rich, slightly bitter liquid burned pleasantly on the way down, yet he had no desire to dull his senses.

Around him the celebration continued to swell... drums thundering, voices rising in rough songs, warriors stamping and spinning in the flickering light while children darted between the tables with sticky hands and bright eyes.

Kira stayed close to his left side, her shoulder occasionally brushing his arm. The earlier tears had dried, replaced by a quieter, more complicated emotion as she watched her people reclaim the night.

Every so often she would glance up at him, as if still reassuring herself that he was real and present among them.

Zeyra stood on his right, more at ease than usual, though her sharp eyes never fully stopped scanning the crowd. She had accepted a cup as well and drank with more enthusiasm than Sol, the firelight catching the faint curve of satisfaction that still lingered at the corner of her mouth.

”You’re not going to dance?” she asked at one point, her voice dry but not unkind.

Sol let out a low huff of amusement. ”I’d rather not give the entire tribe a new story about their savior making a fool of himself.”

Kira smiled softly at that. ”They would only cheer louder.”

Before Sol could reply, a familiar presence approached through the crowd.

Warchief Veylara moved with the same straight-backed authority she had carried all day, though the rigid tension of command had eased somewhat from her shoulders. High Shaman Zephyra walked a half-step behind her robes faintly luminous in the firelight. Both women stopped before Sol.

For a moment, none of them spoke. The noise of the feast washed around them like a living tide.

”You should be among them,” Veylara said at last, nodding toward the dancers and the laden tables. ”This night belongs to the living. That includes you.”

Sol met her deep blue eyes. ”I’m exactly where I need to be.”

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched Veylara’s mouth. She did not press the point. Instead, she raised her own cup slightly in his direction... a small, private acknowledgment rather than a public gesture.

”Then at least drink with us,” she said. ”The dead have been honored. The living must still face tomorrow.”

Sol inclined his head and raised his cup in return. The four of them drank together in the firelight while the drums continued to pound and the Veynar celebrated the simple, stubborn fact of their survival.

Above the settlement, the night sky stretched vast and cold, indifferent to the small circle of warmth and noise below. But within that circle, for one night at least, the tribe refused to bow to either grief or fear.

...

Slowly the night deepened around the settlement, but the three bonfires showed no sign of dying.

If anything, they burned higher as more timber was fed into the flames.

The drums shifted into a slower, heavier rhythm, and the dancing grew less frantic, more grounded... bodies moving with the stubborn endurance of people who had stared death in the face and chosen to keep living anyway.

Laughter still rang out, but it was interwoven now with quieter conversations, shared looks, and the occasional moment of silence when someone stared into the fire a little too long.
