Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 395: Chapter 395: The Bizarre Mother-in-law

Qi Fenglian had finally managed to convince Zhang Jisheng with a mix of emotion and reason, a hard and soft approach. The next day, she told his parents about the arrangement.

”What, going to Qing City to work? Abandoning the family?” Mother Zhang said, glaring at Qi Fenglian as she spoke.

In her eyes, it was definitely this daughter-in-law who had bewitched her son into neglecting their home to seek his own pleasures.

Qi Fenglian pretended not to notice her mother-in-law’s glare and just played with her son.

”Dad, Mom, our child has grown up, and now we have Baobao. We all want to earn some savings for him, to provide for his education later on, so he won’t have to worry about getting married and having children,” Zhang Jisheng said with an apologetic smile, though inside he was somewhat resentful towards Qi Fenglian.

”Can’t find a job in Flower County, have to go so far away?” Mother Zhang snorted, ”If something happens at home, will you be able to handle it quickly?”

Qi Fenglian couldn’t help but speak up, ”Mom, isn’t Jiguang and his wife working in the county?”

The Zhang family had three children. The eldest was Zhang Jisheng, followed by their daughter Zhang Zhenzhu, and then the youngest, Zhang Jiguang, who were all married.

Zhang Jiguang, having studied up to high school and being educated, became a teacher in a county elementary school through his wife Wang Li’s connections. His wife was a salesclerk in a supply and marketing cooperative. With the help of the Yue family, they had bought a small house and moved out to the county just two months ago.

Qi Fenglian’s point was that the Zhang family didn’t only have one son, why should only Zhang Jisheng be responsible for everything? Couldn’t Zhang Jiguang, being a son as well, bear some of the burden?

Upon hearing Qi Fenglian’s words, Mother Zhang’s face became long, and she said, ”Jiguang is so busy at the school, where does he find the time? Do you think everyone has nothing better to do?”

At these words, both Qi Fenglian and Zhang Jisheng’s expressions turned sour.

It was precisely because they were deemed idle that they wanted to go out and work.

”Mom, we’re not as capable or educated as our younger brother, that’s why we want to go out to work, so we’re not just sitting idle at home,” Qi Fenglian said through clenched teeth.

Mother Zhang knew she had misspoken, yet when Qi Fenglian finished, her face was not pleased at all and she said, ”What can you do out there? It’s a long way to go, and it’s all just labor. Isn’t it the same wherever you work?”

”Mom, Fenglian’s brother’s wife is now doing business and wants us to help out. We’re thinking of working anyway, and it doesn’t matter who we work for. Working for relatives would at least save face!” Zhang Jisheng said, ”We also want to earn more money to support you and Dad!”

Qi Fenglian frowned slightly, opened her mouth, but said nothing.

Mother Zhang, upon hearing it was for Qi Taiguo’s wife’s work, was taken aback and perked up, asking, ”Working for her, how much does she pay?”

”This...” Zhang Jisheng looked towards Qi Fenglian.

Qi Fenglian lowered her eyes and said, ”We haven’t even asked for your blessing to go yet, let alone asked about all that.”

”What kind of work is it, the kind where you just supervise others and don’t have to do anything yourself? It’s like...” Mother Zhang nudged Jisheng’s father, who was smoking on the side, ”What’s that kind of job like Brother Xiang’s daughter Meimei has?”

”It’s an official position, I guess. Anyway, she just directs people to work, she’s a leader!” Jisheng’s father thought for a moment.

”Right, right.” Mother Zhang looked at Qi Fenglian and asked, ”If you go, will they make you officials or leaders?”

If that were the case, it would be more than good; she’d just direct others to work without doing any herself, easily earning a salary, comfortably.

Qi Fenglian was taken aback by her mother-in-law’s bizarre suggestion and said agitatedly, ”Where is there work that doesn’t need doing? We’re just going there because it’s our own people, it’s easier to talk.”

She suddenly regretted her decision to speak out, wondering if going to work might bring trouble for Taiguo’s wife and her family.
