The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Ranking Tournament

The tournament arena was a crater.

Literally. Some previous generation had carved a massive bowl into the planet’s surface, lined it with ward arrays that could withstand Spirit Soul-level attacks, and called it a competition ground. The stands rose in concentric rings around the fighting floor, already packed with thousands of students from every tier.

Iron Tier occupied the lowest section. Rust Tier sat above them. Bronze above that. Silver and Gold at the top, close enough to look down on everyone else with appropriate disdain.

”Cozy,” Kira muttered beside Kael. ”I love the smell of inferiority in the morning.”

”You’re in Iron Tier too.”

”Temporarily. This tournament changes things.” She stretched her arms overhead, lightning crackling between her fingers. ”Watch and learn, Vorn.”

”I’ll try to contain my excitement.”

The tournament structure was simple, brutal and efficient.

Four brackets: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold. Each bracket fought internally. The top three from each bracket advanced to a cross-tier elimination round. The final winner received a permanent tier upgrade and access to the inner planets.

Kael’s name appeared on the Iron bracket board.

Thirty-two names. Single elimination. Five rounds to the finals.

He scanned the list.

Most names meant nothing. A few he recognized from the past week — Glyx, the fire-starting green-haired girl, a werewolf who’d punched through a training dummy by accident.

Kira’s name was on the bracket too.

They were on opposite sides. They wouldn’t meet until the finals.

Assuming they both made it.

”First match!” The announcer was a vampire woman with a voice that carried across the crater without amplification. ”Glyx versus Thorne!”

Glyx practically sprinted to the arena floor. His opponent — a hulking human with arms like tree trunks — followed at a leisurely pace.

The match lasted twelve seconds.

Thorne grabbed Glyx by the throat and threw him out of the ring.

The crowd laughed.

Glyx didn’t get up for several minutes.

”Next match! Kira Storm versus Brennan!”

Kira vaulted the arena wall and landed in the center, fists raised, yellow eyes blazing. Her opponent — a nervous-looking elf with a sword — approached cautiously.

The match lasted four seconds.

Kira closed the distance before the elf could draw his weapon and hit him with a lightning-enhanced uppercut that launched him three meters into the air. He landed outside the ring.

The crowd roared.

Kira raised a fist and pointed directly at Kael.

”Next time, that’s you.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”Match seven! Kael Vorn versus Marcus Chen!”

The crowd murmured. Nobody knew that name. Orange talent. Standard core. Iron Tier.

Kael stood.

Walked to the arena floor.

His opponent was already there — a wiry human with a spear, Core Formation Rank 6, hands trembling slightly. Marcus Chen had drawn the short straw and he knew it.

”Listen,” Marcus whispered as Kael approached. ”I don’t want to fight you. The Bronze Tier guys are offering money to anyone who hurts you. But I’m not—”

”Stop talking.”

”I’m just saying—”

Kael moved.

His hand caught the spear shaft and then pulled. Marcus stumbled forward. Kael’s knee met his stomach.

Marcus doubled over.

Kael pushed him gently.

He toppled out of the ring.

The arena went silent.

”That’s it?” someone in the crowd shouted. ”That was nothing!”

”He barely touched him!”

”Fixed match! Has to be!”

Kael walked back to his seat without acknowledging any of it.

Kira stared at him.

”You didn’t even use your power.”

”Didn’t need to.”

”You’re insufferable.”

”Thank you for the compliment, my lady.”

The tournament ground on.

Iron Tier students fought and fell. Some were talented — a fox-kin girl with illusion abilities made it to the quarterfinals before Kira dismantled her. A dwarf with enhanced strength lasted three rounds before being outmaneuvered by a werewolf.

Kael advanced through each round without effort.

Round two: He tripped his opponent and let momentum do the rest.

Round three: He caught a sword bare-handed and squeezed until the blade snapped.

Round four: He didn’t move at all. His opponent ran at him, tripped on a gravity distortion he’d placed on the ground, and knocked himself unconscious against the arena wall.

The crowd had stopped laughing.

They’d started whispering instead.

”Who is he?”

”He’s not using any power. How is he winning?”

”Maybe he’s hiding his realm?”

”Nobody hides their realm in a tournament. The wards detect everything.”

”Do they?”

The whispers grew louder.

THE FINALS — IRON TIER

Kira Storm versus Kael Vorn.

The arena fell silent.

Two thousand students watched. Bronze Tier leaned forward. Silver Tier stopped their conversations. Even a few Gold Tier students glanced down from the highest seats.

Kira bounced on her heels, lightning wreathing her body, eyes bright with anticipation.

”I’ve been waiting for this.”

”You’ve been waiting to lose.”

”Cocky.”

”I keep saying it, It just pure confidence.”

”Those are the same thing when you’re wrong.”

Kael smiled.

Kira attacked.

She was faster than before. The week of tournament fights had sharpened her already-keen instincts. Her lightning-enhanced strikes came from impossible angles — feints within feints, each one designed to create an opening for the killing blow.

Kael didn’t dodge.

His gravity sense mapped every movement before she made it, and his body responded without conscious thought.

Kira grew desperate.

She poured more mana into her fists. Lightning blazed. The air smelled like ozone. Her strikes came fast enough to blur.

Kael caught one.

Then the other.

Then both.

He held her fists in his palms, lightning crackling harmlessly against his skin, and looked at her with those silver eyes.

”You’re good,” he said.

”Let go of me.”

”No.”

”Kael—”

”You’re fast, aggressive and also creative. Your weakness isn’t technique — it’s mindset.” He released her fists and stepped back. ”You fight like you have something to prove. That makes you predictable. Every attack says the same thing: look at me.”

Kira’s face flushed.

”Shut up.”

”The moment you stop trying to impress and start trying to win

, you’ll be dangerous.” Kael turned his back on her. ”I’m done here.”He walked out of the ring.

The arena exploded.

Not with violence. With noise. Thousands of voices shouting, arguing, demanding. Disqualification. Forfeit. What was he doing? Who did he think he was?

Kira stood in the center of the ring, fists clenched, lightning dying around her.

Her yellow eyes burned.

”You think you can just walk away from me?”

Kael didn’t turn around.

”I just did.”

”I’ll find you. I’ll fight you again. And next time—”

”Next time,” Kael said over his shoulder, ”bring something worth my time.”

He disappeared into the crowd.

Kira screamed in frustration and hit the arena floor with a fist that cracked stone.

Lightning erupted outward, scorching a ten-meter circle around her.

The crowd backed away.

In the Bronze section, Percival Smith watched with a broken wrist and terrified eyes.

In the Silver section, Cassian Vale closed his pocket watch and smiled.

In the Gold section, Karacus the Ice Dragon-kin opened one eye, then closed it again.

LATER — IRON TIER DORMITORY ROOF

Kael sat on the roof.

Aria materialized beside him.

”You forfeited the finals.”

”I won Iron Tier.”

”You didn’t win anything. You walked out of the ring.”

”Same result.”

”It’s not.” Aria’s voice was tight.

”What is the plan?”

Kael looked at her.

”Dominate.”

Aria said nothing.

”The Vorn family thinks I’m nothing. The academy thinks I’m nothing. Sebastian thinks I’m a joke.” His silver eyes gleamed. ”I’m going to show every single one of them exactly how wrong they are.”

”That’s not a plan. That sounds more like your ego.”

”Same thing when it works.”

Aria sighed.

She sat beside him.

They watched the stars in silence.
