The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

The quest changed while Kael was showering.

Kael stared at the notifications.

Water dripped from his hair onto the floor.

”A transcendent core,” he said flatly.

Correct.

”Transcendent cores are theoretical. No confirmed case in Vorn family history. Possibly no confirmed case in the entire Thirteen Worlds. The Patriarch has a Flawless core and he’s four hundred years old.”

Correct.

”You want me to form one in five months? I think you have finally lost it.”

The quest parameters are based on your actual potential, not your perceived limitations.

A new window opened.

[SHADOW SHOP — SPECIAL LISTING]

Transcendent Core Pill Recipe — 1050 SP

A pill specifically designed to increase the probability of forming a transcendent core during breakthrough. Note: Recipe only. Ingredients must be acquired separately.

Kael purchased it without hesitation.

The recipe flooded his consciousness — a complex alchemical formula involving seventeen different ingredients, specific temperature controls, precise timing sequences, and mana infusion patterns that bordered on art.

He read through it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

The ingredients list made him wince.

Starfall Lotus — Rared grade. Found only in high-altitude dungeons. Average black market price: 80,000 credits.

Abyssal Moss — Rared grade. Grows near dying world rifts. Average black market price: 45,000 credits.

Phoenix Marrow — Precious grade. Extracted from Phoenix-Kin beasts. Average black market price: 200,000 credits.

Heartblood Crystal — Precious grade. Formed in the chests of Rank B+ dungeon beasts. Average black market price: 150,000 credits.

The list continued. Seventeen ingredients total. Combined cost: roughly 700,000 credits.

SOPHIE’S QUARTERS — THIRTY MINUTES LATER

Sophie opened the door before he knocked.

She was wearing a nightgown. Thin. Pale. Her hair was loose around her shoulders. She looked like she’d been waiting for him.

Which she probably had.

”Kael.”

”I need money.”

Her expression flickered — surprise, then something warmer, then careful neutrality.

”How much?”

”Seven hundred thousand credits.”

The number didn’t make her flinch. The Mann family had been wealthy before absorption. Sophie had maintained personal accounts that the Patriarch didn’t bother monitoring because she wasn’t considered important enough to have secrets.

”What for?”

”Ingredients. For a pill that will help me form a transcendent core.”

Sophie’s eyes widened.

”Transcendent? Kael, that’s—”

”With the right resources, anything is possible.” He met her gaze. ”Can you get it?”

She disappeared into her quarters. Returned five minutes later with a credit chip.

”Eight hundred thousand,” she said. ”Extra for unexpected costs.”

Kael took the chip.

”Thank you.”

”Will I see you after?”

”No.”

Her face fell.

Kael turned and left.

ARIA’S QUARTERS

Aria opened the door without a word.

Kael handed her the credit chip and a data tablet containing the pill recipe.

”Find an alchemist. Someone skilled enough to handle Precious grade ingredients. Someone discreet. I need two pills from this recipe — one high quality, one standard.”

Aria glanced at the recipe. Her eyebrows rose slightly.

”This is—”

”Expensive. Rare. Complicated. I know.” He turned to leave. ”The higher quality pill goes to me. The standard one is yours. You’re close to Core Formation yourself. This will help.”

”You’re useful to me.” He glanced over his shoulder. ”Don’t make it weird.”

He left.

Aria stared at the closed door.

Then she looked at the recipe.

Then at the credit chip.

She got dressed and headed for the city.

Kael sealed the entrance to his cultivation chamber with gravity and shadow.

No interruptions. No visitors. No messages.

Five months.

The Mantra of the Void Sovereign hummed in his consciousness as he meditated, pulling pure mana into his expanding reservoir. Each cycle of the mantra refined the energy further, stripping impurities, compressing density, pushing his Rank 7 foundation toward its absolute limit.

Body refinement ran in parallel. Four hours of bone crystallization each morning, four hours of organ enhancement each evening. The Void Body Refinement accelerated both processes, but the pain was extraordinary. His skeleton felt like it was being dissolved and rebuilt simultaneously.

He endured.

Month one: Rank 7 peaked. Ready for Rank 8.

Month two: Rank 8 achieved. The barrier between 8 and 9 was thicker than any previous rank. Pure mana accumulation wasn’t enough. He needed comprehension — deeper understanding of mana’s fundamental nature.

Month three: The Starwhisper Tea helped. Aria delivered three more doses through a gap in his sealed entrance, along with food and water. He consumed them without acknowledgment and kept meditating.

Month four: Rank 9. The peak of Mana Gathering. His reservoir was massive now — three times larger than a normal Rank 9 cultivator, filled with mana so pure it shimmered faintly when he circulated it. The barrier to Core Formation loomed ahead like a cliff face.

Month five: Aria delivered the pills.

Two small vials. One contained a pill that glowed golden — warm, dense, practically humming with contained alchemical power. The higher quality one. The other pill was paler, less vibrant. Standard quality. Still potent. Still valuable.

Kael held the golden pill up to the light.

[System. Success probability?]

With the high-quality pill: 22%. Without: Less than 1%. The pill doesn’t guarantee a transcendent core — it raises the probability by creating optimal conditions during the compression process.

Note: Your Void Body Refinement and the Mantra of the Void Sovereign provide additional bonuses. Estimated combined success rate: approximately 28%.

Twenty-eight percent.

Nearly three in ten.

Terrible odds by any normal standard.

Kael swallowed the pill.
