The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Three Flames

The pills sat on the stone floor between them.

Aria stared at the two vials. One glowed golden — dense, warm, practically radiating alchemical potency. The other was paler. Still valuable. Still powerful. But visibly inferior.

”The golden one is yours,” Kael said.

Aria looked at him. ”You said—”

”I changed my mind.”

”Why?”

Kael picked up the paler pill and examined it. Even through the glass vial, he could feel the difference. The golden pill hummed with contained energy, each ingredient perfectly fused, the alchemical balance flawless. This one... wasn’t.

”Your combat ability matters more right now than mine,” he said. ”I can compensate for weaker foundations with technique and versatility. You can’t. You’re a pure shadow fighter. A stronger core amplifies everything you do.”

”What about you?.”

Kael said nothing.

”Kael.”

”Take the pill, Aria.”

She took it.

[System. Success probability with this pill?]

Analyzing...

Estimated success rate for Transcendent Core: 20%.

Contributing factors:

- Pill quality: Standard (not optimal)

- Void Body Refinement (Tier 1 Peak): +5%

- Mantra of the Void Sovereign (19% comprehension): +3%

- Soul Integrity (52%): +2%

- White Talent (Suppressed): Unknown bonus

Total: approximately 20% with wide margin of error.

Note: If you had consumed the higher quality pill, estimated success rate would be 35%.

Kael didn’t hesitate.

He swallowed the pale pill.

The breakthrough began thirty minutes later.

It started as warmth — the pill dissolving in his stomach, releasing alchemical energy that spread through his meridians like honey through water. The warmth intensified, building from comfortable to hot to burning, until every nerve in his body was screaming.

Kael sat motionless in the center of his sealed chamber, legs crossed, eyes closed.

The warmth reached his mana reservoir.

And the compression began.

Core Formation was fundamentally simple in concept: take the massive, diffuse lake of mana that constituted the Mana Gathering realm and compress it into a solid sphere. The quality of that sphere determined everything that followed. A Cracked core leaked mana constantly, limiting total capacity. A Standard core held but didn’t enhance. A Flawless core refined mana as it cycled, providing passive benefits. A Perfect core did all of that and resonated with the cultivator’s abilities.

A Transcendent core...

No one knew exactly what a Transcendent core did because very few had ever confirmed forming one.

The pill’s alchemical energy wrapped around his reservoir like a shell, providing structure for the compression. Without it, the mana would collapse chaotically — Cracked at best, catastrophic failure at worst. With it, the compression had guidance. Direction.

But guidance wasn’t enough for Transcendent.

The pill could create optimal conditions. It couldn’t force perfection.

That part was up to him.

Kael activated the Mantra of the Void Sovereign.

The ancient syllables filled his consciousness, and the pure mana — already refined beyond normal standards by months of mantra cultivation — began to separate from impurities that even the pill couldn’t address. Each thread of mana that passed through the mantra’s filter emerged cleaner, denser, purer.

The compression accelerated.

His reservoir shrank. The lake of mana collapsed inward, volume decreasing as density increased. The pressure mounted — physical pressure against his meridians, spiritual pressure against his will.

Kael gritted his teeth.

The first critical moment came when the reservoir had compressed to roughly half its original size. This was the point where most cultivators’ cores crystallized — the mana becoming solid, locking into whatever quality the compression had achieved.

Kael pushed harder.

The mantra intensified. His Void Body Refinement — Tier 1 Peak, every bone crystallized, every organ enhanced — provided a physical foundation that could withstand the increasing pressure. A weaker body would have ruptured.

The reservoir shrank further.

One-third. One-quarter. One-fifth.

The pressure was enormous now. His meridians groaned. Blood trickled from his nose. The sealed chamber’s walls cracked under the gravitational distortion his power was unconsciously projecting.

Compression at 78%, the System reported. Core quality is currently Flawless. Transcendent threshold has not been reached.

”What’s the threshold?”

Unknown. Transcendent cores are theoretical. The System can identify when quality exceeds known parameters but cannot define the exact boundary.

”Then how will I know?”

You’ll know.

Helpful.

The reservoir compressed further. Eighty-five percent. Ninety. Ninety-two.

And then something shifted.

Deep in his chest — beneath the reservoir, beneath the meridians, beneath everything that constituted his cultivation — something that had always been there stirred. The suppressed White talent. The locked Mythic-grade soul. It responded to the compression not as stress but as opportunity.

Like a key fitting into a lock.

The mana changed.

It transformed. The already-pure energy took on a quality that Kael had no name for. It was still mana. Still the fundamental energy of existence. But it was more. Denser in a way that had nothing to do with physical compression. Sharper. More real.

Ninety-five percent.

Ninety-seven.

Ninety-nine.

The reservoir was a marble now — tiny, impossibly dense, humming with power that made the air around Kael vibrate.

One hundred percent.

The core crystallized.

Kael opened his eyes.

The world looked different.

Not visually — the sealed chamber was the same cracked stone and shadow that it had been for five months. But spiritually, everything had changed. He could feel the core in his chest — not as a foreign object, but as a part of himself. An organ he’d been missing his entire life.

And inside the core...

He looked inward with Enhanced Mana Sight.

The core was spherical. Roughly the size of a marble. Translucent, with an inner glow that shifted between colors.

Blue flickered along the surface — threads of lightning energy that crackled and sparked, representing his Lightning Manipulation. The core would generate lightning-attuned mana naturally, reducing the cost of lightning techniques and increasing their power.

At the center of the core, something pulled.

A tiny point of absolute darkness. This was the absence of everything. A miniature singularity that warped the space around it, creating a subtle gravitational distortion even within the core’s boundaries. His Gravity Manipulation, given physical form.

And between the blue lightning and the black hole, something else burned.

A small purple flame.

Not bright. Not aggressive. A quiet, steady flame that seemed to consume the space around it without actually consuming anything. It was new. It hadn’t been there before the compression. It responded to his newly acquired Shadow Manipulation but wasn’t quite shadow.

It was something else.

Something that was still developing.

[TALENT UPGRADE DETECTED]

Previous: Orange (Uncommon) — Suppressed

Current: Green (Rare) — Partially Unlocked

Note: Core Formation has partially released the suppression on your true talent. Further realm advancements will continue the unlocking process.

Kael stared at the talent notification.

Green. Rare.

From Orange to Green in a single breakthrough.

Not because his talent had changed. Because the suppression was lifting. Every realm he advanced would unlock more of his true potential. Every step closer to his real power.

He closed the notifications and stood.

His body felt different. Stronger. More present. The Transcendent core wasn’t just a mana container — it enhanced everything. His physical movements were sharper. His senses were clearer. Even his thought processes felt faster.

Core Formation early stages didn’t require stabilization. The core would settle naturally over weeks of normal activity. No point sitting in a sealed chamber when he could be training.

He unsealed the entrance.

Moonlight flooded in.

Five months of darkness. Five months of pain. Five months of gambling everything on a twenty percent chance.

He’d won.

Time to keep moving.

THE EASTERN RUINS — DAWN

Kael resumed body refinement where he’d left off.

Tier 2 Early: Meridian reinforcement. Not the major meridians — those were already strengthened by the Void Body Refinement. This stage targeted the micro-meridians, the thousands of tiny channels that connected the main network to individual cells. Strengthening them increased the body’s ability to absorb and circulate mana passively.

He sat in his usual spot, activated the Body Refinement Accelerator, and began.

The mantra hummed.

The core pulsed.

His body grew stronger.
