Bear School Astartes

Chapter 93: 93. Belengar

”Don’t, don’t kill... this place is very close to the trade district! If you kill us, you’ll definitely be in trouble!”

The thug in his grasp was trembling, trying to turn his already small brain.

Lann’s fierce style, grabbing someone like a ragdoll and beating them up before saying a word, made the small-time thug genuinely feel he could be crushed to death at any moment.

Although reason told him that this place was close to the trade district; if someone were to commit murder here, neither Vizima’s city defense force nor the security force would let it slide.

But fear, that is something not governed by reason.

Moreover, the [Yakxi Rune] intensified it.

”Do the dock workers and the unloaders near the city gate have any management organization? Either official or unofficial.”

”The King’s... the King’s accountant only cares about the tax, nothing else. The workers... the laborers are under our Snake Fang Gang, and we take a fifth of every copper they earn.”

Snake Fang Gang? What a cliché name.

This tacky name even made Lann feel a discomfort from the inside out, grinding his teeth.

”Who handles the accounting in your gang, and where do they usually appear?”

”Rong Ge... I only remember him giving me money, as for the gang’s accounts... I don’t know.”

Under the hood, a pair of long, beautiful eyebrows slightly furrowed.

Come to think of it, the accounts of a gang are indeed a top secret.

So, who manages the accounts is not something these low-level hoodlums on the street would know.

”Then just tell me about Rong Ge, where can he be found?”

”Once he gets the money, he’ll go to the House of Night. That’s the best brothel in Vizima! But right now, it’s impossible to find him there.”

”Why?”

”It’s still about the accounts... Five days ago, all gang accountants were taken away for a big reconciliation, regardless of their size.”

This time, the eyebrows under the hood weren’t just slightly furrowed but knit tightly into a knot.

Five days ago... to say that this coincidental timing has no hidden tricks, Lann might as well worship Meretelli.

In other words, the traffickers have even the lowest laborers managed seamlessly?

... Could a national espionage agency really achieve this level!

The deeper the investigation, the more terrifying the scale of the opposing force becomes.

This is also why, in this world, Warlocks who have extraordinary powers must negotiate friendly terms with Kings and even submit to them.

The power of the extraordinary is limited.

Even someone as powerful as Alzur, whose summoned giant centipede can destroy half a city block!

But when faced with truly all-pervasive power and money, and behind those two, what really works - human desire.

Even Mana seems insignificant.

Manipulating human hearts triumphs over manipulating magical power.

This is the truth of the world.

But Lann is not from this world, and he has witnessed the terrifying extent of what true power can achieve.

So far, the young Demon Hunter is not disheartened.

”Then give me the name of a worker, one who works the most, with the highest frequency of work.”

Since the management organization of laborers is well-handled, why not explore deeper!

I’ll directly find the people who transport the goods!

”Be-Belengar... that guy, like you, doesn’t like looking up at people. He lives in the Temple District...”

Under the hood, slender lips curled into a satisfied arc.

Moments later, a tall and robust cloaked man walked out of the alley. As he stepped from the shadows into the sunlight, he instinctively brushed off his not-dirty clothes.

Behind him in the alley, two dazed thugs were piled on a puddle of vomit.

When they wake up, they’ll just think they had a quarrel and, in a fit of emotion, fought in the alley.

The willpower of two city thugs pales in comparison to blood-faced warriors.

Following the thug’s information, through the chaotic and winding self-built houses, Lann quickly found the target’s house.

But when he reached the door, the noise inside the house made him stop with pursed lips.

”Oh! My warrior! Oh!...”

This is obviously a bachelor’s place, and the bold voice inside belongs to a woman.

”Mentos... block it out.”

”Sir, I do not recommend you doing this. Firstly, it helps in overcoming your shy mentality. Secondly, it is evident that this worker’s physical condition is extraordinary just by listening; we should not abandon this clue for emotional reasons.”

This time, starting his path in the patching-up business, even without greetings, the biological smart brain spoke on its own volition.

Under the hood, Lann had no expression.

”It sounds like your second reason was just made up?”

”Sir, not at all, you cannot unfoundedly speculate against a loyal and devoted smart brain!”

Alright, I’ll truly listen then.

The lady inside had decent skills, at least in terms of ”satisfying a customer with voice alone”.

Fortunately, the noise that made the young man want to dig at his nails ended in less than two minutes.

A barely clothed woman, trying to put on the little clothing she had, eagerly left before fully dressed.

Still clutching a money bag, she shouted back at the room while smiling, ”Call me again next time; I’ll give you a discount, my warrior!”

Lann stood against the wall the whole time, breathing long and quietly.

Due to the angle, the woman didn’t even notice his presence.

The woman turned and left, as a hand clad in studded leather gloves kept the door from automatically closing.

Turning around, the tall figure slipped smoothly into the room.

The room was very simple, and a man of indiscernible age lay shirtless on the bed, his skin covered in many hideous scars.

At first glance, Lann’s eyebrows slightly furrowed.

These scars... were they left by monsters?

”Why are you still here? What I gave should be enough...”

This man recognized someone else had entered his home without opening his eyes.

Belengar is no ordinary laborer.

Lann couldn’t believe that in such a delicate time, under such a conspiratorial net, this unusual character could appear purely by coincidence?

So the young man simply charged straight up.

He didn’t draw a sword or use the pyramidal spikes on the front of his gloves.

Instead, he opened his palm, aiming the heel towards the opponent’s throat.

The man lounging lazily on the bed in reminiscence of the afterglow suddenly awoke the instant Lann made his aggressive move.

In the surprised face of the young man, he opened his glowing, cat-like eyes.

... Demon Hunter?!

”Alder!”

”Boom!”

Lann’s hand, responsible for the strike, jerked back and raised to guard his face.

The intense impact hit him, almost causing his 200-kilogram frame to lift off the ground!

This guy’s rune-casting speed... is a level faster than mine?! So proficient!

While Lann marveled at the opponent’s proficiency in rune-casting, the opponent was even more surprised.

Belengar maintained the rune-casting gesture while trying to prop himself up from the bed and adjust his battle stance.

This was a spell variant of the Wolf School Demon Hunter, able to transform [Alder’s Rune] into a method for providing sustained forward force.

Meanwhile, the young cub of the Bear School opposite... he blocked it with just his arm... and was fine?!

Surprise had no time for expression as Belengar’s cat eyes contracted into a thin line from something even more absurd.

Damn it!

This kid is charging through [Alder] head-on!
