Genetic Ascension

Chapter 1798: Fine

Zayreus didnʼt seem to react like someone who had just had their throat sliced. In fact, he was still kind of... hovering there. Well, he was still on his knees, trying to stand, or fall. It wasnʼt quite clear which one.

As for this red blood, it only seemed to grow darker and darker.

And then high above, the crimson eye split the skies.

The Rat hadnʼt expected to be suddenly healed by the grace of a Demi-God. Honestly, he had expected that it would take him decades more before he was back at full health.

Every day, he thought of that kid who had outplayed him and ground his teeth, but to think that he would get a chance at revenge so quickly.

Of course, he knew that he would eventually bite himself in his own ass with his Greed for more... but he couldnʼt exactly help it. If he wasnʼt the Rat, then who would be, exactly?

But in all this time, he had also thought of how to avoid this situation happening again.

The thing about being Greedy was that you wanted it all, to have your cake and to eat it too. He didnʼt want to compromise.

When he had been directed to Earth, he knew he was being used, but he went anyway because it was an opportunity. And when he was directed to go to the Golden Grove this time, he saw it as much the same.

But that didnʼt mean that he would make the same mistake twice.

This time, when he sensed his false Greed Seed detected once again, he frowned and shook his head, then he looked into the skies... And did absolutely nothing.

He knew for a fact that it wouldnʼt blow back on him again, but this was unfortunate. This Zayreus had been a very good candidate, the closest he had ever been to succeeding.

What pissed him off, though, was that it was the same person who had thwarted him once again. He had sensed it... but somehow they felt different.

Hadnʼt they smelled like a Glutton before? Why was that scent gone?

Beneath his hood, the Ratʼs nose twitched, what looked like whiskers peeking out for a short instant before vanishing.

There was nothing Rats hated more than the Gluttons. As far as the Rat was concerned, Gluttons were just Greedy fools who couldnʼt see the full scope of what the world had to offer.

Why focus on food when there was money and wealth, when there was life and immortality, when there were women and love?

You could have it all.

Every Sin was redundant and worthless before Greed.

And he was losing too many of his things to this Sylas Grimblade.

Sylas looked up into the skies and his eyes narrowed.

The connection he expected to be formed wasnʼt this time. He knew that the Rat was behind this, and expected to use the Crimson Eye to deal with him once again, but it actually didnʼt work.

The Crimson Eye that appeared in the sky this time gazed around for a moment and then locked eyes with Sylas.

However, Sylas only looked back at it, his gaze much the same as always. After seeing the ceiling of the universe, it would probably be remarkably difficult to find something that fazed him.

”Are you going to continue to be useless?” Sylas asked.

The Crimson Eye shook and a floating ruby aura hung in the air. It seemed to be a warning, but Sylas didnʼt seem

to care.

The system had the ability to wipe out a Demi-God Clan instantly from across the Heavens on a whim. Distance wasnʼt a problem, and scope wasnʼt a problem.

If it had an aura to sense, there was no reason it couldnʼt kill them outright. Even if it meant scanning the entire universe planet by planet first, the system was more than capable of doing it with a small bit of effort.

But it seemed unable to right now, even though Sylas was holding a dagger full of the Ratʼs aura right this moment.

The curved blade had already been used as the vessel for one of the Ratʼs false Seeds before. As for the Scorned Wraps, their purpose was to hide and suppress the existence of the Seeds from the system.

Essentially, it was all too easy for Sylas to use the latter to force the appearance of the former. The hardest part of it all was just noticing what had happened to Zayreus in the first place.

But even that, though it had been subtle, wasnʼt all that difficult for Sylas. When Zayreus first appeared, his eyes flashed with crimson.

The problem with making someone a Vessel of a Seed was that they wouldnʼt have the Scorned Wraps, and so long as someone was familiar with the aura, exposing them was too easy.

Sylas had once had this false Seed within him, so how could he not recognize it when he saw it?

Something told Sylas that this hadnʼt been part of Rhykanʼs plans at all. But maybe Rhykan didnʼt care what methods the Rat used in the first place and just unleashed all of his enemies in this place.

Rhykan was probably more focused on the Seeing Eye Guild right now. He was more interested in making sure Sylas didnʼt interfere with him for the time being, and if that led to Sylasʼ death, all the better.

But now Sylas was playing a game of chess with the Rat, and though he had taken one of the latterʼs bishops, the Ratʼs King wasnʼt even in check yet.

It seemed that no one involved here could be underestimated.

Sylas pulled back the dagger, spinning it in his hands. The blood flung off and Zayreus collapsed to the ground.

Sylas didnʼt spare the Crimson Eye another glance. It was indeed as they said... it was impotent.

But that was fine. If this plan wasnʼt going to work, then he would just need another.

For now, he had other matters to attend to.

BOOM.

Niafonʼs palm descended from above.
