Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 139: Chapter 139 Switched the Tracking Target

The squad leader outside the space stood in place for a while, then doubled back, repeatedly checking for anything suspicious. Only then did he continue forward.

Fortunately, she could see outside from within the space. Seeing him move forward, Yunyi exited the space and resumed her pursuit.

After leaving the cemetery, Squad Leader Xu Wenchang went straight into the Lin Zi ahead.

Yunyi’s skills were not for naught. With the cover of the large trees, she dared to follow even closer. Even though she was in the Lin Zi, she made not the slightest sound.

Whenever the squad leader stopped for counter-surveillance, Yunyi would instantly slip into the space.

The squad leader didn’t stop until he reached an old elm tree.

As he turned his head once more to ensure it was safe, Yunyi had already leaped onto a nearby sand pine tree and slipped into her space.

After another cautious inspection, the squad leader finally put his fingers to his lips and whistled a few times.

Anyone listening carefully would realize these whistles weren’t random; they were a coded message.

Shortly after, two men emerged from the opposite direction. One of them asked, ”What took you so long?”

The squad leader hurriedly explained, ”I ran into someone on my way out, which delayed me a bit.”

Hearing his reply, Yunyi couldn’t help but scoff internally.

Then she heard one of the men say, ”We’ve been searching these mountains for so long but haven’t found the place. Are you sure that thing is reliable?”

Fearing a misunderstanding, the squad leader quickly said, ”The moment I got the box, I notified my superiors. Someone came and took it away that very day.”

That man retorted, ”Then there’s only one possibility: we only got a part of it. Otherwise, we wouldn’t keep circling that patch of Lin Zi without finding the location.”

The squad leader asked, somewhat puzzled, ”But wasn’t it said that the map in the box perfectly matched the piece sent by the superiors? How could it be just a part? Besides, the person who was originally left behind is already dead. Even if we wanted to find them to ask, we wouldn’t know where to look.”

He had feared that man would try to steal the credit, so he’d used a trick when he obtained the item. Not long after, the man died.

Yunyi listened intently to their conversation, which confirmed her suspicions. So this squad leader really is compromised.

I need to visit his house soon, to at least get a clear understanding of the situation.

Then she heard the other man speak in Japanese: ”Go back to where you originally got the item and check if anything was missed. We can’t wait any longer; we’re already being watched. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. If that item isn’t found, it’s not just us who are finished—you won’t escape a bad end either.”

The man beside the squad leader saw he didn’t understand what his companion had said in Japanese, so he translated for him.

The squad leader understood they were threatening him, afraid he was hiding something. Resentment surged within him. He had immediately notified his superiors to retrieve the item, yet now they suspected him. It was infuriating.

But he knew that a single word from these people could seal his doom. ”I understand,” he said. ”I’ll go back in a few days and check if anything was missed.”

Yunyi watched them separate. She then switched her focus to the two men who had met the squad leader, tailing them deep into the mountains.

I’m sure of it now. These two are from that group I ran into before.

To avoid startling the enemy, she decided not to follow these two for now. Besides, they would keep operating in the mountains if they couldn’t find what they were looking for.

I must tell Liu Chenglin and the others about this immediately and see what they think. I can’t let my actions mess up their plans.

Also, before the squad leader’s identity as an enemy agent is exposed, I need to make the Qiu Family show their hand. They dared to target me, so I definitely can’t let them off.
