Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 800: Cost of Two Hours

They heard the fighting before they saw it, which was the first bad sign.

The Gutwrack Span had been loud when they left. Now it was louder, and the sound came from the wrong places, echoing up out of ravines that should have been behind the defensive line rather than inside it.

”They’ve been pushed back,” Jian said, and picked up his pace despite ribs that had very strong opinions about the decision.

The northern position came into view first, and Kira’s stomach dropped.

The ridge they’d been holding when the three of them left was gone. Not overrun. Gone, collapsed into the ravine below, and the line had reformed a full quarter mile back on ground considerably worse than what they’d started with.

Julian was still standing on it. So was everyone else, which was the only genuinely good news in the whole picture.

”You look terrible,” Julian said, when they reached him.

”You look worse,” Kira said.

”That’s fair.”

Marcus’s report came fast and clean once they were back inside the sector link.

”Fourth hour, the southern flood found a ravine we hadn’t mapped and got behind us. Cost us the northern ridge holding the response. Fifth hour, the flying gate escalated. Sixth hour, they started coordinating.”

”Coordinating how?” Jian asked.

”Two gates pushing at once, timed together. Not close together. Exactly together.” Marcus’s voice had the flat quality of someone who’d been managing seven crises simultaneously for hours. ”Something on the other side is watching what we do and adjusting.”

”That’s not supposed to happen,” Kira said. ”Monthly events don’t adapt.”

”Year-end ones apparently do,” Marcus said. ”Or something’s directing this that isn’t part of the event’s normal design. Either way, it’s happening, and I don’t have time to work out which.”

”Casualties?”

”None dead,” Marcus said, and let that sit a moment because it mattered more than anything else in the report. ”Forty-three wounded badly enough that Kayla’s had to take them off the line. She’s running on nothing. Silvester took a bad one at the sixth hour and got up anyway, which I’ve already told him was stupid.”

”It was efficient,” Silvester’s voice came through, ragged but cheerful.

”It was stupid.”

”Can be both.”

Emma found Kayla twenty minutes later, sitting for the first time in eleven hours, hands still faintly green with light she couldn’t seem to fully switch off.

”You need to stop,” Emma said.

”So do you,” Kayla said. ”How’s Jian?”

”Lying about his ribs.”

”He always does.” Kayla pushed herself upright with visible effort. ”Bring him to me anyway. He’ll argue. Bring him regardless.”

Almond met the three of them at the sector’s center, and he’d changed since they left.

Not visibly. But Kira had spent enough months around him now to notice the difference in how he stood, and Emma noticed the same thing a half second later.

”You used the rebuild,” Emma said.

”Two hours ago,” Almond said. ”When the northern ridge went down.”

”And?”

Almond didn’t answer directly. He simply looked past them, toward the western gate where something enormous had just started forcing its way through, and said, ”You’ll see it in about forty seconds.”

The thing came through the breach in pieces and reassembled itself on the other side, which was a trick none of the previous monsters had managed. Segmented plates the size of doors slotted together into a serpentine body two hundred feet long, and it moved across the broken ground like water finding its level, flowing over ravines rather than crossing them.

”That’s Epic-tier,” Jian said. ”At minimum.”

”Probably,” Almond agreed, and stepped forward alone.

What he called wasn’t Grimreaver Sovereign. It wasn’t Voidseed Genesis either.

The air around him folded, and something came out of that fold that had no clean shape at all, a construct built from angles that didn’t agree with each other, pieces of it existing at slightly different distances than the rest.

Vault of the Sovereign Keymaker had always been Almond’s strangest deck, the one he’d used least because he’d understood it least. Whatever the cave had turned it into, it was no longer strange.

It was precise.

The construct moved before the serpent did, reaching into the space the creature was about to occupy rather than the space it currently held, and when the serpent flowed forward into that space, something in its own segmented structure simply did not arrive with the rest of it.

Twenty feet of the creature’s midsection failed to reassemble.

The serpent’s whole body convulsed, front half suddenly disconnected from back half, and Almond walked toward it through the settling dust with the same flat calm he brought to everything.

”It reassembles itself as it moves,” he said, to nobody in particular. ”So I stopped letting the pieces find each other.”

Grimreaver Sovereign finished it, blade finding the one true center of a thing that no longer had the structural coherence to protect it, and two hundred feet of Epic-tier monster came apart across the western ravine.

Emma stared. ”What is that deck called now?”

”Keyward Absence,” Almond said. ”It doesn’t take things apart. It just declines to let them come together.”

”That’s horrifying.”

”It’s useful,” Almond said.

The coordinated push came at the tenth hour, and it came at four gates simultaneously.

Marcus saw it building three minutes before it landed, which was exactly enough time for the whole sector to brace and not nearly enough to reposition anyone.

”Four gates,” he called. ”West, north, center, and the flats. Whatever’s directing this has decided to stop testing us.”

”Then we stop being tested,” Rudra said. ”Everyone holds. Nobody reinforces anyone. If your position breaks, you fall back to the next ridge and you hold that instead.”

”And if there’s no next ridge?” someone asked.

”Then you make one,” Big D said.

The push hit like a single decision made by four separate mouths.

Silvester and Hiroshi’s position took the worst of it, the flats being the only ground in the sector where an organized enemy could actually bring numbers to bear, and the grey soldiers came in formation ranks four deep, shields locked, advancing at a pace that never varied.

Hiroshi met the first rank alone, buying the main army the eight seconds it needed to set. He didn’t try to break the formation. He simply picked one point in it and hit that point until it stopped existing, and the whole disciplined advance had to reshape itself around a hole punched through its center.

Silvester met the second rank beside him a moment later, both of them holding a line that had no business holding, and behind them four hundred Regalons finally locked into position.

”Eight seconds,” Silvester said, breathing hard. ”You said eight seconds.”

”It was nine,” Hiroshi said.

”Then you owe me a second.”

Natalia’s Warsong Absolute sang across the whole flat, every note landing where Marcus’s markers said a formation gap was about to open, and the grey soldiers, for all their discipline, could not hold ranks against an enemy who kept striking the exact place their coordination was weakest a half second before it became weak.

Maya’s Truthweave read their coordination three moves ahead and fed it to everyone at once, and the difference it made was immediate and enormous.

”Left flank shifting in four,” she called. ”Three. Two. Now.”

The flank shifted exactly when she said it would. The Regalon line was already there.

Noah and Kira took the north together, Endless Blade and Eternal Frost working in the tight, wordless rhythm they’d built at the Bladed Carousel months ago, ice locking targets that steel then removed, over and over, neither of them needing to check what the other was doing.

Julian’s Wildfire Eternal held the ravine mouth below them, flame refusing to gutter no matter how many bodies were thrown into it, and Emma, running on reserves she’d already emptied once today, dropped Starfall in careful, rationed bursts rather than the sustained rain she’d used at the Ashfall Basin.

”I’ve got maybe six more of these,” she called.

”Then make six count,” Julian called back.

She made six count.

Rudra and Ainen held the center, and the center held because Tollbound Reckoning had spent ten hours quietly building debt from every single strike the center gate had thrown at them.

When Rudra finally called it in, the resulting reckoning cleared three hundred yards of ravine in one stroke, a wall of collected consequence arriving all at once on everything that had spent ten hours earning it.

”That’s the deck working properly,” Ainen observed, watching it happen.

”That’s ten hours of patience,” Rudra said. ”The deck’s just the receipt.”

The push broke at the eleventh hour, and the Gutwrack Span held all seven gates.

Barely. Two positions had fallen back. One had fallen back twice. Kayla had forty-three wounded and no reserves left in Edenroot, and Jian’s ribs had graduated from a problem to an actual injury he could no longer pretend around.

But nobody had died, and seven gates were still contained, and the event board updated with something none of them expected.

[Sector Performance Evaluation: The Gutwrack Span.]

[Ranking among all active sectors: 3rd.]

Marcus read it twice.

”Third,” he said. ”Out of every sector in this event. We’re third.”

”We’re third at hour eleven,” Rudra corrected. ”This runs for days.”

”Let him have the moment,” Lily said.

”He can have the moment,” Rudra said. ”The moment’s about ninety seconds long. Then everyone eats, everyone sleeps in rotation, and we do this again.”

Ainen was already moving toward the supply cache, because that particular order was the one part of all this that had always been his.

”Ninety seconds,” he called back. ”Then hot food in twenty minutes. Nobody fights this thing on an empty stomach, I don’t care what’s coming through those gates next.”

Above them, the sick orange sky had started to darken toward something worse, and the second emergency task notice arrived a moment later.
