Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 771: Second Round

The brackets reset overnight, and whatever ease the first round had offered vanished with it.

”Second round opponents are never soft,” John warned them, walking the four of them toward the rings the next morning. ”Anyone still standing this deep already proved they belong here.”

He wasn’t exaggerating.

---

Almond’s opponent called himself Vherim, and the crowd on the Aurelian ring had already started calling him something else entirely.

”The Unbound,” a nearby spectator murmured, as the man’s blade shifted color three times before the match even began. ”His deck doesn’t hold one shape. It refuses to.”

Almond read the blade the moment the fight opened, the way he read everything, and found nothing waiting for him but confusion. The weapon’s essence changed between one heartbeat and the next, iron becoming glass becoming something that wasn’t quite fire, no single truth sitting still long enough to be read.

The first exchange nearly cost him for exactly that reason. He turned aside a strike he’d read as heavy, and the blade that actually landed was light and impossibly fast, catching his shoulder in a shallow line before he’d finished adjusting.

”Careful,” Vherim said, almost gentle about it. ”Everyone tries to read me once. Once is usually enough to lose.”

Almond gave ground, thinking fast. His usual answer, one clean truth found and exploited, had nothing to grab onto here. So he stopped looking for a truth in the blade at all.

Alfred came first, silver and precise, matching Vherim’s shifting speed with pure reflex rather than prediction, buying Almond the room to actually watch instead of react. Benedict rose a breath later, bastion sigils flaring, absorbing two wild strikes that would have opened Almond’s side if they’d landed clean.

”Interesting,” Vherim said, genuinely pleased. ”Most people just keep trying to read me harder.”

”I stopped trying to read the blade,” Almond said, watching now instead of guessing. ”I’m reading you instead.”

And there it was, once he looked properly. The shifting wasn’t random at all. It followed Vherim’s own breathing, a rhythm as steady as a heartbeat once you stopped expecting the weapon to hold still and started watching the man holding it.

Almond let three more exchanges pass, counting silently, and on the fourth beat of that private rhythm, in the fractional gap between one shift and the next where the blade briefly held no true nature at all, he struck.

His Grimblade found nothing to deflect it. For that one heartbeat, there was nothing there to deflect it with.

Vherim went down clean, weapon flickering out of existence entirely, and looked up from the ground with something closer to respect than resentment.

”Nobody’s found that gap before,” he said.

”Everyone has a rhythm,” Almond said, offering a hand up. ”Even chaos does.”

---

Lily’s opponent introduced herself only as the Puppeteer, and the silent constructs surrounding her told the rest of the story before she said another word.

A dozen thread-bound dolls hung suspended around her, jointed and faceless, and not one of them made a sound as they came to life.

”No voice,” Lily said, reading the whole arrangement and finding, for the first time in longer than she could remember, absolutely nothing to erase. ”No command spoken. Nothing but thread and will.”

The first doll came at her fast and silent, and Lily’s usual answer, catch the sound, unmake the command, found nothing at all to catch. She met it instead with her whip in the oldest, plainest way she knew, physical force against physical construct, and it worked, but it worked slowly, and eleven more dolls were already closing in behind the first.

”You rely on sound,” the Puppeteer said, threads glinting faint in the light. ”I built these to have none. I’ve beaten three of your kind already this tournament.”

Lily gave ground fast, whip a blur, cutting down doll after doll while three more replaced every one she felled. This was not a fight her usual trick was going to end quickly.

So she stopped listening for sound, and started listening for something else entirely.

The threads weren’t silent. Not truly. They hummed, faint and constant, a vibration too fine for ordinary hearing but not too fine for a Dreadgate built to read the note under everything.

”There,” she murmured, closing her eyes fully now, trusting the whip to answer what her ears alone couldn’t. ”You don’t speak commands. You carry them. In the thread itself.”

She reached into that fine, constant hum, and the Unheard Absolute closed around it the same way it closed around any sound, silence swallowing the tension holding every doll upright at once.

All twelve went still in the same instant, threads gone slack, and the Puppeteer staggered as the sudden backlash of severed control ran straight up her own arms.

”That’s not supposed to work,” she said, staring at hands that had never lost their dolls before.

”You never fought someone who could hear a thread,” Lily said, and ended it there.

Rudra’s opponent moved like a coin that never landed the same way twice, and the crowd on the Emberfall ring had already dubbed him the Gambler for exactly that reason.

He blinked from one point to another in short, random bursts, no pattern to catch, no rhythm to freeze, momentum scattering into a dozen directions before the Unmoved Current could ever settle on one to grab.

”You still my currents,” the Gambler said, blinking behind Rudra before he’d finished turning to track him. ”I don’t have a current. I have odds.”

The first three exchanges proved him right. Rudra reached for stillness and found nothing steady enough to hold, the Gambler’s erratic hops carrying him just outside every attempt.

An admiral did not win a war by chasing one ship across open water. He won it by deciding, ahead of time, which water the enemy could safely sail through at all.

Rudra stopped chasing.

His Ghost Fleet rose around the whole ring at once, spectral hulls fanning wide instead of concentrated on any single point, cannons trained not on where the Gambler currently stood but on every space he could conceivably blink into next.

”Fill the board,” Rudra said, ”and the odds stop mattering.”

The first volley forced the Gambler’s next blink into a tighter corner than he’d planned for. The second volley narrowed it further still. By the fourth exchange, the erratic hops that had once covered the whole ring were confined to a shrinking handful of safe spaces, and Rudra’s Fortification closed the last of them with a wall of raw, patient stillness.

The Gambler blinked directly into it, out of options rather than choice, and the Unmoved Current finally had something solid enough to grip.

”Odds run out eventually,” Rudra said, standing over him. ”Especially against someone who stopped playing your game.”

---

Ainen’s opponent didn’t have a name so much as a description, and the crowd settled for calling her the Glasswrought, because that was, quite literally, what she was.

Her whole body caught the light like cut crystal, translucent and hard, and when Ainen’s blade first found her arm, it rang off skin like a struck bell instead of drawing blood.

”Interesting,” Ainen said, more curious than concerned, at least at first. ”You’re not really a person, are you. You’re a very well-set table.”

”I don’t burn,” the Glasswrought said, voice like wind chimes. ”I don’t rust. I don’t dissolve. Every ingredient trick you’ve used all tournament has nothing to work with here.”

She was right, and the Grand Table’s usual answer found nothing to grab onto at all, no organic weakness, no essence hungry to be turned traitor. His first several exchanges did nothing but chip harmlessly off crystalline skin.

Ainen called the Feast Golem to buy himself time to think, its bulk absorbing two crushing counterattacks meant for him directly, and while it held the line, he turned the actual problem over properly, the way he turned over any dish that refused to cooperate.

Glass wasn’t always glass. It started as sand, and sand became glass only under enormous, patient heat.

”You don’t dissolve,” he agreed, gathering everything the Grand Table could offer into a single point at his blade’s edge. ”But you were made, once. And anything made can be unmade the same way.”

He drove the heated edge into the same spot he’d already struck twice, and this time, instead of trying to dissolve her, he simply kept the heat building, patient as a slow reduction over low flame, working the same crystalline weakness harder and longer than any ordinary strike would have bothered to.

The Glasswrought’s arm began, slowly and then all at once, to soften.

”That’s cheating,” she said, staring at a limb gone suddenly, impossibly pliable.

”That’s cooking,” Ainen said. ”You just haven’t been cooked slow enough yet.”

She yielded before he had to prove the rest of the point, crystal reforming rigid the moment the heat lifted, and looked at him with something between fury and grudging fascination.

”Nobody’s ever found a way to hurt me,” she said.

”Nobody’s ever tried to season you,” Ainen said. ”Big difference.”

---

Four names climbed their brackets again by the day’s end, each fight harder-won than the one before it, and for the first time since the tournament began, all four of them understood exactly how much further this climb still had to go before it was finished with them.

”Second round,” Lily said, catching her breath at the ring’s edge. ”And already it’s asking questions round one didn’t bother with.”

”Good,” Almond said, watching Vherim disappear into the crowd with something that looked, even in defeat, like genuine respect. ”I’d rather earn this the hard way.”

Rudra said nothing at all, simply watching the ring reset for its next match, already turning over what the third round might ask of them that the second hadn’t.

Ainen, predictably, was already deep in conversation with a nearby vendor about whether glass could, in fact, be seasoned properly, and none of them had the heart to interrupt him.
