Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 769: The Hollow Warden

They walked deeper into the Wilds the next morning, and the forest itself seemed to notice.

The wrong-jointed trees grew denser the further in they went, red light bleeding thicker through cracked earth, and the pulse beneath their boots had stopped feeling faint. It beat now, slow and enormous, like they were walking across the chest of something asleep and dreaming badly.

”Whatever’s ahead,” Marcus said, markers spinning slow around him, reading currents in the air none of the rest could see, ”it’s the source. Everything we’ve fought so far has been standing guard for this.”

They found it in a hollow at the center of the grove, and for a long moment nobody moved at all.

It had been a tree once, taller than anything else in the Wilds, and something had gotten inside it and never left. Bark split into bark-colored flesh. Branches ended in fingers instead of leaves. Roots spread out beneath the whole clearing like veins, and every twisted plant they’d fought since arriving had grown from soil this thing quietly ruled.

”The Hollow Warden,” Natalia said, reading the name the way this place seemed to whisper such things into anyone patient enough to listen. ”Everything here answers to it.”

It opened eyes along its trunk, dozens of them, and every one of them turned to the nine intruders standing in its grove.

The fight began before anyone chose to start it.

Roots erupted from the ground in every direction at once, faster and hungrier than the single root-wraith had ever been, and Kayla’s vines rose to meet the first wave on pure reflex, green fighting red across a dozen points of contact simultaneously.

Natalia’s arrows sang into the Warden’s trunk, and where each note landed, bark cracked and wept dark sap, but the wounds closed almost as fast as they opened.

”It heals,” Jian said, lightning crackling down both fists as he tore through a root reaching for his ankle. ”Faster than we can cut.”

”Then we don’t cut,” Marcus called, markers flaring around a seam only he could see. ”We overwhelm.”

They tried. Julian’s fire caught along one massive branch and held, at least, refusing to close the way the sword-wounds had. Kira’s frost locked another limb rigid long enough for Noah’s shifting blade to sever it clean.

It wasn’t enough. The Warden’s canopy split open overhead, and spores the color of old wounds rained down across the whole clearing, thick and choking, clinging to skin and lungs alike.

Maya went down first, mirages flickering and failing as the spores fogged whatever focus her deck needed to hold them steady. Emma’s light dimmed, radiance smothered under a haze that seemed to eat brightness on contact.

”Can’t breathe,” Noah gasped, staggering, blade suddenly too heavy in hands gone weak and shaking.

Kayla threw everything Bloomheart Ward had into clearing lungs one at a time, and it wasn’t enough, not against a whole grove’s worth of poison falling at once.

”We’re losing this,” Marcus said, grim and honest, dragging Maya upright by main force. ”We need something we don’t have yet.”

Natalia felt it first, somewhere under the choking spores and the growing certainty that this fight might be the one the Wilds finally won.

Not despair. Something sharper than despair, something that refused, flat and total, to let this be the ending.

Her bow answered before she understood what was happening, Warsong’s silver strings unraveling into threads of pure sound that wove themselves into something new entirely, a second weapon rising alongside the first.

[Second Deck Manifested: Silverstep]

Twin blades formed in her hands, weightless and impossibly fast, and the moment she moved, her whole body seemed to phase half a step ahead of where it should have been, spore-cloud and grasping roots both a fraction too slow to catch her now.

”I can move,” she said, breathless with something close to wonder, already cutting a path toward the Warden’s trunk faster than the poison could follow. ”I can actually move!”

Her breakthrough cracked something open in the rest of them, one after another, desperation finally finding the door it had been looking for all fight.

Marcus’s markers exploded outward into full formation, no longer simple guides but active weapons, snapping shut around three separate roots and turning their own force back against them.

[Second Deck Manifested: Riposte Engine]

”Every hit against me,” he said, grinning fierce as a root’s own strike rebounded and struck the Warden instead, ”is a hit for me now.”

Maya’s failing mirages dissolved and reformed as something sturdier, ethereal threads spinning out from her hands to lash around root and branch alike, binding motion rather than merely mimicking it.

[Second Deck Manifested: Threadbind]

”I don’t need to trick it anymore,” she said, hauling a reaching branch taut and still. ”I can just hold it down.”

Kayla’s vines thickened into something with teeth of their own, thorned barriers blooming around Noah and Emma both, shielding failing lungs while healing light worked underneath.

[Second Deck Manifested: Thornveil]

”Breathe behind this,” she told them, voice steady despite the chaos. ”I’ve got the wall. You focus on breathing.”

Jian’s lightning grounded itself all at once, current sinking down through his own feet instead of out through his fists, and stone climbed up both arms in answer, granite plating heavy and immovable.

[Second Deck Manifested: Graniteguard]

”Hit me,” he told the Warden, planting himself in the poison’s thickest cloud without flinching. ”I’ll still be standing after.”

Julian’s fire stopped clinging to single branches and spread instead, catching along the spore-cloud itself and burning it back on a widening front, flame chasing flame across open air.

[Second Deck Manifested: Wildfire Wake]

”It doesn’t heal from ash,” he said, teeth bared in something that wasn’t quite a smile. ”Let’s see it try.”

Noah’s failing strength found new ground the instant his blade bit into scorched, cleared earth, an anchor of pale light driving down where the steel struck and holding fast.

[Second Deck Manifested: Anchorpoint]

”I don’t need to guess what I am anymore,” he said, voice steadier than it had been all fight. ”I just need to hold this ground.”

Kira’s ice gave way to wind, sharp and sudden, blades of pressure slicing free of her palms and cutting swaths through the thinning spore-cloud.

[Second Deck Manifested: Gale Fang]

”Cold wasn’t fast enough,” she said, already moving faster than the eye could easily follow. ”Let’s try fast.”

And Emma’s dimmed light split in two, radiance folding into shadow and back into brilliance in the same breath, a burst of darkness swallowing one final wave of spores before erupting back into blinding gold.

[Second Deck Manifested: Eclipse Veil]

”Dim me down,” she said, grinning fierce through the return of her own light, ”and I come back brighter.”

Nine new decks turned the tide in the space of a single ragged breath, and the Hollow Warden, for the first time since the fight began, hesitated.

Natalia used the hesitation without mercy, Silverstep carrying her clean through a grasping wall of roots and up the Warden’s own trunk, twin blades finding the one place all those healing wounds had never quite reached, the hollow at its center where whatever had taken this tree still lived.

”Hold it still!” she shouted.

Maya’s threads answered, binding branch and root alike into stillness. Jian’s stone-clad fists hammered a path clear. Marcus’s markers turned every desperate counterattack back against the source that launched it.

Natalia drove both blades into the hollow together, and the Warden’s dozens of eyes went dark all at once, canopy shuddering, roots stilling across the entire grove in a single slow exhale.

It did not fall so much as settle, ancient and finally, mercifully quiet, sap running dark and slow from a wound that would not close again.

They sat in the cleared, poison-free air afterward, nine exhausted bodies and eighteen decks between them, and for a long moment nobody said anything at all.

”Two each,” Julian finally managed, staring at gauntlets that now burned steadier than they had that morning. ”We just doubled ourselves in one fight.”

”We nearly didn’t survive long enough to,” Kayla said, tending the last of Noah’s cleared lungs with vines that still smelled faintly of thorns. ”Let’s not forget that part.”

Natalia climbed down from the Warden’s stilled trunk, twin blades already folding back into light, and looked out at her family, bruised, victorious, and undeniably stronger than they’d been at dawn.

”Three decks left,” she said. ”For all of us.”

”Three decks,” Marcus agreed, ”and whatever this place decides to throw at us next.”

Nobody argued, and nobody rested for long. The Bloodroot Wilds stretched on ahead of them, red-lit and patient, and nine people who had destroyed everything to get here settled their new weapons into steady hands and walked on into it together.
