Re-Awakening: I Ascend with a Legendary class

Chapter 775: The Road To Final

The first match of the true bracket drew every eye in Reaching Heaven Realm, and for the first time all tournament, Kael Vantress did not end it in one strike.

The Wraith fought from angles that shouldn’t have existed, shadow bending around her like it owed her a debt, and for three full exchanges she found seams in Vantress’s guard that no one else all tournament had managed to locate at all.

”You’re better than the rumors said,” Vantress said, almost surprised, turning to track her fourth vanishing step a half beat late.

”Rumors undersell everyone,” the Wraith said, and struck from a shadow that hadn’t existed a heartbeat earlier.

It nearly worked. Vantress caught the blow on a guard raised at the very last possible instant, and for one suspended moment the whole garden seemed to hold its breath along with him.

Then his own gift answered, the same terrible certainty that had ended every match before this one, a single reading of the fight’s entire shape collapsing down into the one motion that ended it cleanest. His strike didn’t need to be fast. It only needed to already know exactly where she’d be.

The Wraith went down clean, disbelief plain on her face even as she hit the ground.

”Four exchanges,” Vantress said, offering a hand up, genuine respect in it. ”Nobody’s taken me past two in three years.”

”Small comfort,” the Wraith said, but took the hand anyway.

---

The second match drew a smaller crowd only because half the garden was still discussing the first, and the wandering cultivator’s fight against Frosthold’s champion proved, within minutes, exactly why nobody had bothered worrying about the outcome.

The Frosthold champion fought like the glacier he resembled, slow, patient, building unstoppable momentum with every advance, and against anyone else in the tournament that momentum might have simply crushed the match flat.

The cultivator never once met it directly.

She yielded to every strike a fraction before it landed, redirecting rather than blocking, and each redirection sent a little more of the champion’s own momentum spinning back into his next advance instead of forward into her.

”You’re feeding my own strength back into me,” he said, slowing despite himself, momentum souring into something clumsy and self-defeating.

”You brought a great deal of it,” she said, quiet and unbothered. ”I simply didn’t want to keep any for myself.”

He overextended on his own gathering weight in the fight’s final exchange, and she stepped through the gap it left behind without any particular hurry, ending it with a touch so light most of the crowd missed the moment it actually happened.

---

Lily’s match against Vantress came an hour later, and she walked into it having watched exactly what the Wraith’s four exchanges had cost him to survive.

”You saw what happened to her,” Vantress said, settling into his stance.

”I saw what almost happened to you,” Lily said. ”That’s more useful.”

”Everyone says something like that before we start,” he said, not unkindly. ”Almost nobody means it the way they think they do.”

”Let’s find out which kind I am.”

She didn’t open testing. She opened with everything, ten shadow-wolf Dreadlings pouring off her whip in a single wave, fast and coordinated in the way only a year of shared battles had taught them to move.

Vantress didn’t simply read his way past it. He met the wave with his own blade in full motion, a technique the crowd hadn’t seen from him all tournament, Stormbreaker forms cutting three wolves apart in a single spinning arc that cost him real effort to land clean.

”Your first deck,” he said, breathing a fraction harder already. ”Efficient. I’ll need more than instinct for the rest of it.”

”Good,” Lily said. ”I brought four more.”

Her whip cracked again, dark seams tearing open across the ring floor, Dreadgate constructs rising jointed and silent, striking from angles her wolves never could have managed. One rift opened directly beneath his own feet.

He didn’t simply step clear this time. He called Aegis Ward, a shimmering wall snapping up around his legs a half second before the rift could close on them, and the effort of raising it fast enough left a visible strain across his shoulders.

”Second deck,” he said. ”You’re not making this easy.”

”Neither are you,” Lily said, and reached deeper.

Nightweave unraveled from her shoulders in curling black thread, three copies of herself peeling away, identical in every visible way, closing on him from three directions at once. Vantress burned Windrunner’s Grace to answer it, speed doubling in a burst that let him meet all three at once instead of guessing between them, and even then one copy’s strike opened a shallow line across his forearm before the illusion scattered.

”First blood,” Lily said, breathing hard herself now. ”That’s three decks of mine and two of yours already spent.”

”I’m aware,” Vantress said, and for the first time all tournament, there was no calm performance left in his voice at all, only plain, honest effort.

She didn’t let him recover. Hollowcurse rose next, dark tendrils lashing his sword arm, draining strength from the contact, and this time he had nothing fresh left to answer it with cleanly. He tore free, but it cost him, the curse leaving his whole arm trembling with borrowed weakness.

”That’s new,” he said, forcing the arm back into a guard that shook doing it.

”I have one deck left,” Lily said. ”And I don’t intend to be gentle with it either.”

Her Dread Sovereign flickered into being at her shoulder, mending the burns his counters had opened along her ribs, and she pressed forward with everything she had left while he stood already spent, arm weakened, breath ragged, every deck he’d built across years of training already committed to simply staying alive this long.

He had one answer left too, and both of them knew exactly what it cost him to reach for it.

”I don’t use this against everyone,” he admitted, and something in the ring itself seemed to still around him as he called it, the whole fight’s shape gathering into a single, terrible point of certainty. ”I’ve never needed to before today.”

Lily threw the Unheard Absolute at that certainty the instant she felt it forming, silence swallowing the gathering readiness whole, and for one full second his gift, his one true advantage, simply had nothing to answer with at all.

It should have been enough. On any other day, against any other opponent, it would have been.

But he had spent this entire fight learning her, the same way she’d spent this entire fight learning him, and in the half second her own silence began to fray under the weight of everything else she’d already thrown, he found the narrowest possible sliver of an opening left in the whole exhausted, brutal fight and drove everything he had left into it at once.

His strike landed clean, catching her already overextended, and the whip fell from fingers that had simply run out of reserves to keep fighting with.

”Yield,” he said, and his voice shook doing it, blade trembling against her collar from an arm that had nothing left to give either.

”I yield,” Lily said, and there was no shame anywhere in it, only the particular satisfaction of having made someone this strong empty every single thing he had to beat her.

He didn’t offer a hand up right away. He simply stood there a moment, catching his breath, arm still trembling from the curse, forearm still bleeding from her illusion’s strike.

”Five decks,” he said finally. ”All five of mine, and the one thing I’ve never had to use against anyone in three years. I’ve never come that close to losing.”

”Then I’d say that’s a start,” Lily said, ”for whatever comes after this tournament.”

---

Rudra’s match against the wandering cultivator drew the largest crowd of the day, and he walked into it with the same flat calm he brought to every fleet he’d ever commanded into weather nobody else wanted to sail through.

”You watched two fights already,” she said. ”What did you learn?”

”That you don’t fight force,” Rudra said. ”You borrow it. So I brought less to steal.”

He didn’t open with strength at all. His Ghost Fleet rose thin and scattered across the whole ring, a dozen small threats instead of one large one, and where the Frosthold champion had handed her an ocean of momentum to redirect, Rudra offered nothing but scattered raindrops, each one too small on its own to feed back into anything worth having.

She adjusted, patient as ever, yielding to what she could and simply absorbing the rest, but absorption without redirection cost her something the Frosthold champion’s single overwhelming advance never had to pay.

”Clever,” she said, the first real acknowledgment she’d given anyone all tournament. ”You’re not trying to overpower me. You’re trying to exhaust me.”

”An admiral doesn’t win a war in one battle,” Rudra said. ”I’ve never once tried to.”

The fight ran longer than any other in the day’s bracket, patience against patience, and it was Rudra’s own trained stillness that finally decided it. He read the exact moment her endless yielding began to cost more than it returned, spent the Unmoved Current on a current that had nothing left to redirect into, and closed the gap while her own calm, for the first time all tournament, faltered by half a second.

It was enough. His blade found her guard exactly where the Frosthold champion’s momentum never had, patient rather than powerful, and she stepped back from the strike with something that might, on anyone else’s face, have been called a smile.

”Well fought,” she said. ”Truly.”

”Well fought,” Rudra agreed, and meant every word of it.

---

The board above the courtyard finished its update as evening settled over Reaching Heaven Realm, and every name but two had gone dark across the whole six-champion bracket.

Final: Kael Vantress vs. Rudra Regalon.

Lily found him at the ring’s edge, already reading the board herself, and the look she gave him was equal parts pride and quiet challenge.

”Beat him,” she said simply. ”For both of us.”

”I intend to,” Rudra said, and for once, there was nothing careful in the way he said it at all.
