Earth's Greatest Magus

The journey, originally planned to last ten days, stretched into fifteen as unforeseen delays hindered their progress. But at last, the capital city of Pradera revealed itself on the horizon, sprawling across the plains like a jewel set in stone. Emery and his group paused atop a gentle hill to take in the breathtaking sight.

Pradera was a marvel of architectural splendor and magical innovation. The skyline bristled with towering spires and domes that gleamed like burnished gold under the afternoon sun. Arcane runes etched into their surfaces shimmered faintly, protective enchantments keeping the structures pristine against time and weather. The intricate stonework spoke of centuries of craftsmanship, while magical enhancements gave the city an ethereal beauty.

Cobblestone streets crisscrossed the city in a labyrinthine network, alive with activity. Magical lampposts cast a soft glow even in daylight, enhancing the vibrancy of the scene below.

Flying carriages and magus were strictly prohibited from soaring above the city. Respecting the rule, Emery descended with his carriage and entered the city on foot, passing through the main gate and into the bustling streets.

The streets buzzed with energy—merchants called out from vibrant stalls, entertainers performed dazzling feats of magic, and travelers eagerly haggled over exotic wares. The diversity of the people was striking: humans mingled with towering beastmen, lithe elves with delicate features moved gracefully through the throng, and even a few lumbering giants made their way through the crowded avenues, their presence commanding attention.

Shinta’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she wandered the busy streets, flanked by her two new Magus bodyguards, Ha Ron and King Rig.

“Look at that! ….And that!” she exclaimed, darting from one stall to the next, her enthusiasm infectious.

Meanwhile, Emery trailed behind, his pace unhurried but his senses sharp. He observed the crowds with a practiced eye, his awareness honed to pick up even the faintest hint of danger. Just within their immediate vicinity, he could identify at least a dozen figures emanating the unmistakable aura of Grand Magus experts. The sheer density of power in the city was staggering.

Beside him, Soltz strolled casually, his hands clasped behind his back. “What do you think? Any cities in your realm this lively?” he asked, his tone light but laced with curiosity.

Emery glanced at him briefly. “It’s… different,” he replied noncommittally, unwilling to divulge more about his traveler origins. His focus shifted to their destination, a quieter district on the edge of the bustling city, The Azure Cloud Mansion.

Despite the Azure Cloud faction’s reputation as one of the top-tier powers in the Border City, their residence here was modest, even understated. The mansion was built in the traditional style, with polished stone walls softened by creeping vines and flowering plants that framed the arched windows. A tall wrought-iron gate, embossed with the faction’s sigil, marked the entrance. Inside, the estate was surrounded by a tranquil garden, filled with blooming flowers and neatly trimmed hedges. At the gates, Emery presented a letter from the Azure Patriarch. The guards, clad in the azure and silver livery of the faction, examined it carefully before bowing and granting them entry.

The letter served as his introduction and a means to justify his stay, offering him a convenient cover as a member of the Azure Cloud faction while he navigated the city’s intricate social and political web.

A steward greeted them just inside the courtyard, his demeanor courteous but uneasy.

“Welcome, sir,” the steward said, bowing deeply.

Emery nodded, taking in the scene. The mansion was quiet, almost eerily so, with no sign of the usual bustle one might expect from a faction of this standing. It was clear that only a skeleton crew of guards and staff remained on-site.

“I was hoping to speak with the masters,” Emery said, his tone neutral. “When will they be returning?”

The steward hesitated, his brow furrowing. “Unfortunately, sir, both Master Lerand and Master Ardan have been away for nearly two months. They left on a mission for the king, and we’ve had no word from them since.”

“No word at all?” Emery asked, frowning.

The steward shook his head, looking troubled. “None, sir. We… we were hoping you might have come to help us find out what happened to them.”

A sense of unease crept into Emery’s mind. Something about the situation felt off. The two masters of the Azure Cloud faction; the patriarch brother and cousin were formidable cosmic expert figures, not ones to disappear lightly.

Emery’s thoughts turned to the political currents of the capital and the potential dangers lurking beneath its surface. He recalled his prior meeting with the third prince, a potential ally in navigating these complexities. Perhaps the prince might have information about the missing Azure Cloud masters—or the king’s mission that had sent them away.

For now, the steward seemed eager to accommodate them, providing comfortable lodgings within the mansion and seeing to their needs.

That evening, as Emery settled into one of the guest chambers, the quiet of the mansion only deepened his unease. The tranquil atmosphere seemed deceptive, hiding the undercurrents of tension lingering in the air.

It was well past midnight when Emery felt it—a subtle ripple in the surrounding energy. Instinctively, he stilled his breathing, sharpening his senses. A shadow flickered in the corner of the room, barely perceptible to an untrained eye.

However, Emery’s divine sense was keen, easily identifying the presence that had dared to sneak into his room. As the figure stepped further inside, Emery spoke calmly, his tone edged with quiet authority.

“You work fast…”

The figure paused, then stepped forward into the dim light, revealing the dark uniform of a Moonshard Society agent.

“I am Number Sixteen,” he introduced himself before handing over the information Emery had requested—names and identities of known travelers within this realm.

As Emery scanned the list, his eyes widened in surprise. A familiar name leapt out at him.

“Is this him?… he’s here as well?” a mix of disbelief and intrigue coloring his voice.
