Brother Dao Took the Entertainment Industry by Storm, Fans Beg Me Not to Kill Anymore

Chapter 686: What You Play Is a God—

A few minutes later, in the quiet office, Xiao He stared at the documents in front of him with a stunned expression.

“World Olympiad Drama Competition?”

This was a completely unfamiliar name.

Xiao He had never ventured into this field, so naturally, he had no idea about the prestige of this competition.

But based on his past experience as a student, with prefixes like “World” and “Olympiad” combined, it had to carry enormous weight.

This was undoubtedly one of the most authoritative events in the drama world, and if he had to guess, in previous years, they would have directly sent the National Team to perform.

So Xiao He couldn’t understand at all why such an important competition would invite him as a special guest performer…

Don’t tell him it was because the massive National Theater couldn’t find anyone to compete—don’t make him laugh, that was impossible—

“Huh? Seriously, no one can play it?”

The doubts Xiao He was about to voice were immediately shut down by Yang Heng.
And facing Xiao He’s “stubborn” questioning, Yang Heng just shot him a look. “Yes, due to the setting of this script, the requirements for this actor are extremely complex, so we haven’t found a suitable candidate yet—originally, before I met you, we had already given up on this script.”

“But thanks to the chance meeting during the ‘Imperial Enterprise’ audition, I got to interact with you. I also got your resume from Director Chou and studied your situation carefully. That’s why I truly believe you’re perfect for participating in our stage play competition.”

Then, Yang Heng added very sincerely, “Please rest assured, this role doesn’t have many scenes. It’s just that some parts are quite intricate. Actually, it was your ‘Twelve Mirrors’ that inspired us creatively, so I really hope you’ll consider it.”

Inviting guest actors for such competitions wasn’t unusual; there were precedents both domestically and internationally. Besides, the role Xiao He was invited for was just a small supporting part—not many scenes but important—so Yang Heng’s invitation wasn’t out of place, and there was no major obstacle for Xiao He to accept.

But Xiao He still didn’t quite get it. “Uh, can I ask why other actors can’t handle this role? I’d be happy to participate and win glory for the country, but this sounds a bit complicated. I need to first confirm whether I’m truly capable and qualified for it.”

Yang Heng let out a long breath.

He finally revealed the main reason. “Because in this original script we’ve created, this role is a capricious god who governs the seven deadly sins of humanity—what we commonly know as pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust.”

“The requirements for this role are indeed complex. He has the divine nature of a god, but within him, there are seven personalities. The main performance style involves seamlessly switching between these personas on the spot—just like the detective with multiple personalities you performed at your birthday party. We’ll amplify a specific flaw of the god, presenting a more exaggerated and unique stage performance to achieve the effect of character creation.”

After explaining this, Yang Heng added with some frustration, “To be honest, this is our fault. When we created it, we already considered the difficulty of performance for the actor. But back then, you had just sparked this wave of multi-personality switching performances. Not only were people online scrambling to imitate it, but even within our team, many were practicing it. So at the time, we were full of confidence, thinking we could overcome this challenge. Yet, much to our surprise—”

“The final results were never quite satisfactory.”

Although from the perspective of “Twelve Mirrors,” seven personalities here was relatively few, and logically, this shouldn’t have been an issue, the personalities in “Twelve Mirrors” actually had fundamental differences between them.

For example, the impatient hunter, the cowardly patient, the rebellious teenage girl… these roles had different ages, different personalities, different genders, and even different thought processes and background settings.

When portraying these characters, it was much easier to distinguish them.

But here, the god—He was already a god.

The seven negative traits He carried were essentially sin itself. When infinitely amplified, they only expanded the attribute of “sin” itself, while the other traits that could be expanded were empty and chaotic.

—Because He was a god.

A god had no gender, no superfluous personality traits; they were born as gods, and thus, there was naturally nowhere to expand their background or character.

So for an actor to start from “sin” itself and play a god so perfect it had no other flaws—that was simply impossible!

And for certain deeper implications, the role also had to be young.

So the problem came. If “Twelve Mirrors” couldn’t find a suitable candidate back then, how could they possibly find one for this new script’s character?

Yang Heng might have been able to do it, but he was the male lead and had his hands full. Among the younger generation of actors, the only one he recognized seemed to be Xiao He.

And what Yang Heng didn’t fully say was that this script was also very special.

He hoped to use Xiao He’s fame and popularity to let more people see their work.

—Nothing to do with profit, nothing to do with rankings.

It was just…

The truth was that this was still an anti-war-themed script.

Yang Heng sighed deeply in his heart.

He wasn’t sure, given the current complex situation, whether Xiao He would agree.

But he had tried his best.

From the initial approach to the formal invitation now.

He had done everything he could.

Xiao He didn’t speak either. He just pondered for a moment, slowly closed the file about the competition details, and said seriously, “I’m sorry, but I need to discuss this with my company first.”

Luckily, this competition only happened once every four years, so they still had time to prepare and decide.

In this short time, Xiao He couldn’t possibly finish reading the script Yang Heng had given him. So Xiao He planned to do the same as when he had declined Zhuang Hongyi’s script “Dragon”—temporarily set this matter aside.

He needed to think it over.

Think it over carefully.

—

This visit to the National Theater was, without a doubt, a huge success.

Xiao He had made the rounds, not only meeting a heavyweight like Qu Chengcheng but also scoring a special invitation to perform in a stage play.

The latter didn’t need much discussion—Xiao He still needed to consider it. But the former, through this incident, had genuinely taken note of Xiao He.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that Qu Chengcheng was only the Associate Dean of the National Theater. According to Liu Rulan’s introduction, this heavyweight was also a rehired veteran expert at the Film Association, the Actors Association, and several other related units.

In layman’s terms, in the three major domestic film awards and TV drama awards currently held, a good half of the people sitting on the judging panels and award seats had connections with Qu Chengcheng.

Capital had its own games to play, and the authorities had theirs.

With Qu Chengcheng’s connections, many future award matters wouldn’t end up in a situation like “Let the Mistake Slide” again.

Of course, for now, they were only at the stage of knowing this heavyweight. Thanks to Yang Heng’s situation, Qu Chengcheng had always treated Xiao He quite well.

As for maintaining the relationship in the future and further strengthening mutual benefits… they would need to keep in touch with Yang Heng.

So…

Sitting in the car, Xiao He let out a long sigh, finally realizing that he was being fought over from all sides.

What was going on!

He had thought no one was looking for him before, but now, without warning, everyone was coming to him for collaborations!

This schedule was really going to be packed solid until next year!
