Dawn Experiment

#Day 37 — 23:40

The corridor was dim, the ship’s lights reduced to their night setting. Zhao walked slowly, his footsteps heavy on the carpet, his body aching in places he hadn’t known he had. The day had been long—tanks built, lines tested, Victoria’s training leaving bruises on his ribs that would purple by morning.

He had not checked his messages.

The thought surfaced as he reached the door to the Willow. He had heard the chime—once, twice, maybe three times—while he was welding the last bracket on the holding tank. He had meant to look. He had forgotten.

The door opened silently.

The Willow was dark, lit only by the low flames of the candles on the table and the soft glow from Chen’s door, left ajar. The tea tree stood in its corner, dark and patient. The jasmine bloomed by the bath, its scent faint in the warm air.

And Aida was waiting.

She stood by the low table, her silk robe tied loosely at her waist, her hair loose around her shoulders. Her eyes found his immediately, and he saw the worry there—not anger, not accusation, just fear. Quiet, contained, but unmistakable.

”Zhao.”

He didn’t answer. He crossed the room, pulled her into his arms, and held her.

She melted against him. Her hands came up, pressed flat against his back, and he felt the tension in her shoulders ease, felt her breath release in a long, slow exhale.

”I was worried,” she murmured into his chest. ”You didn’t answer my message.”

He pulled back, looked at her. ”I’m sorry. I was—”

”I know.” She touched his face. ”You’re always busy now. The tanks, the training, the—” She stopped. Shook her head. ”Eat first. Then we talk.”

She led him to the low table. A plate of snacks waited—rice balls, pickled vegetables, small pieces of dried fish. A pot of tea steamed beside it, already poured.

Zhao looked at the sofa.

Vivienne was curled on one end, her head on a cushion, her breathing slow and even. Mei-Lin lay stretched across the middle, one arm flung over her eyes, her mouth slightly open. They had waited for him too. They had fallen asleep.

He crossed to them, bent, and kissed Vivienne’s forehead—soft, brief. She murmured something, shifted, did not wake. He kissed Mei-Lin’s cheek, felt the warmth of her skin, the familiar scent of her—Tea and milk and sleep.

Then he returned to the table, sat across from Aida, and ate.

The food was good—simple, nourishing, prepared with care. He finished quickly, his hunger sharper than he had realized. Aida watched him in silence, her hands wrapped around her own cup.

When the plate was empty, he set down his chopsticks and looked at her.

”Tell me,” she said.

He shook his head. ”Not here. They’ll wake.”

He stood, offered his hand. She took it, and he led her to the bathroom.

#Day 37 — 23:55

The shower was warm, the water pressure strong. Zhao turned the dial until steam began to rise, then turned to Aida.

She was already untying her robe.

The silk fell away, pooling at her feet. Her body was familiar now—the curve of her hips, the soft fullness of her breasts, the smooth skin between her thighs where no hair grew, permanently removed years ago. He had memorized her, mapped her, loved her.

He stepped close, kissed her neck. She tilted her head, offering more, and his lips traced the line of her jaw, the hollow of her throat, the place where her pulse beat against his tongue.

”The outdoor bath,” she whispered. ”I set it to forty-five degrees. Your favorite.”

He smiled against her skin. ”You always know.”

She pulled back, reached for the soap, and began to wash him.

Her hands were gentle, practiced, moving across his shoulders, his chest, his arms. She knelt before him, soaped his thighs, his scrotum, his cock. He closed his eyes and let the tension of the day drain away.

Then the water rinsed the soap from his skin, and her mouth found him.

He gasped. Her skill was extraordinary—decades of experience, thousands of performances, all of it focused on him. The warmth of her mouth, the pressure of her tongue, the way she knew exactly when to pause, when to deepen, when to—

No.

He reached down, cupped her face, and gently pulled her up.

She looked at him, confused. ”Did I—”

”You did nothing wrong.” He kissed her, soft. ”I don’t want to be served. I want to be with you.”

He turned her, pressed her gently against the tiled wall. The water streamed down her shoulders, her breasts, her stomach. Her nipple was already beaded with milk—not much, but enough. He lowered his mouth to it, sucked, and tasted jasmine. Light. Floral. Her.

She moaned, her hands finding his hair, holding him close.

He moved down her body, his lips tracing her ribs, her stomach, the sharp line of her hip. He knelt before her, breathed in the scent of her—sweet, warm, uniquely Aida—and pressed his mouth to her cunt.

She gasped, her leg lifting, hooking over his shoulder. He feasted on her, his tongue circling her clitoris, pressing inside, drinking her. Her body moved against his mouth, her hips rocking, her breath coming in soft, quick gasps.

He memorized her. The taste of her. The sound of her. The way her fingers tightened in his hair when he found the right spot.

Then he stood.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, and he lifted her, pinned her against the wall, and entered her.

They moved together—slow, deep, purposeful. He knew this body. He knew the spot inside her, the one that made her gasp, the one that built the pleasure slowly, wave by wave. Each thrust brought a small climax, her inner walls clenching around him, her breath catching in a soft, feminine moan.

He pulled back slightly, wanting to see her face.

Her eyes were open, watching him. Each thrust softened her gaze, melting something behind her eyes. The mini climaxes built toward something larger, and he watched her face transform—arousal, trust, love.

Millions had seen her like this. On screens, in videos, across the world. But none had been this close. None had been given her heart.

He was glad. He would treasure it.

The rhythm built. Her expression melted, and they climaxed together—her body convulsing, her mouth opening in a sharp noise between a whisper and a moan, careful not to wake the others. He held her through it, buried inside her, his face pressed to her neck.

They stayed like that for a long moment, the water streaming over them, the ship rolling gently beneath their feet.

Then Aida kissed his ear. ”The bath. Before the water cools.”

He smiled. ”Yes, ma’am.”

#Day 38 — 00:15

The outdoor bath was their sanctuary.

The water was hot—forty-five degrees, exactly as he liked it—and the air was cold, sharp with salt and the promise of southern latitudes. The moon hung above scattered clouds, its light silver on the waves. The ship rolled gently, the water in the bath sloshing against the edges, spilling over in small waves that disappeared into the deck drain.

Zhao sat with his back against the edge, and Aida settled between his legs, her back to his chest, her head resting against his shoulder. The water covered them to the collarbone, warm and embracing.

He wrapped his arms around her waist. She placed her hands over his.

”Tell me about your day,” she said.

He did.

He told her about the holding tanks—how Kim had helped him weld the brackets, how they had tested the seals, how the crabs would stay alive for days if they kept the water circulating. He told her about Victoria’s training—the bruises, the drills, the way she pushed him until his arms shook.

”And the sex?” Aida asked, turning her head slightly. ”How does that work? Do you wrestle, and the winner—”

He laughed. ”It’s not like that.”

”Then what is it like?”

He shook his head. ”Let’s just say Victoria is very inventive. I couldn’t describe it if I tried.”

Aida was quiet for a moment. Then: ”I’m curious now. After two decades in the industry, I thought I’d seen everything. But Victoria—” She turned to look at him. ”Can I come to one of your sessions?”

”For research purposes?” he asked, grinning.

”For research purposes.” She smiled. ”I need to know.”

”I’ll ask her. But I already know the answer. The more participants, the better.”

They laughed together, the sound carried away by the wind.

He told her about his worry for Mei-Lin—the foraging, the cold, the seals that might not be as docile as the reports claimed. ”I want to build her something. A protective suit. Lightweight, warm, something that won’t slow her down.”

Aida nodded. ”She would like that.”

He was quiet for a moment. Then: ”There’s something else.”

Aida waited.

”Alexis.”

Her body tensed against him. ”What about her?”

He told her. The library. The balcony. The blanket falling into the sea. The way Alexis had stared at the water, hopeless, defeated. The way he had grabbed her, carried her inside, sat with her in front of the fire.

”I didn’t know what to do,” he said. ”I hated her. I still hate her, for what she did to Vivienne, to the ship. But I couldn’t—” He stopped. ”I couldn’t let her jump.”

Aida was silent.

”I think she’s stable now,” he continued. ”I told her she could find me if she needed to talk. I’ll check on her tomorrow.”

Aida turned in his arms, facing him. The water lapped at her shoulders, her breasts. Her expression was serious, but not angry.

”Long term,” she said, ”she can’t just rely on you. She needs a solution. I’ll talk to Iqbal and Saanvi. See if there’s a way to mitigate the aphrodisiac effect. Make it possible for her to have normal interactions.”

Zhao nodded.

”In the meantime,” Aida continued, ”it’s better if you pay attention to her. Keep her stable.”

He looked down at the water. ”I’m worried about where that leads.”

”Where?”

”With her. I don’t—” He struggled for the words. ”I don’t want a relationship with her. Not like that. But with Alexis, I’m sure it’s going to involve intimacy. And I’m not sure I can—” He stopped. ”She’s not like anyone else. She’s hermaphrodite. I don’t know if I can be intimate with someone like that. And even if I could, what if she recovers and reverts to her old self? What if she uses me?”

Aida cupped his face, forced him to look at her.

”You’re thinking too much.”

He blinked.

”The source of the problem,” she said, ”is that you’re uncomfortable with who she is. Not what she did. Who she is.”

He said nothing.

”Alexis is not a monster. She was made into one, but that’s not who she is underneath. She needs the right company to guide her to new possibilities.” Aida’s thumb traced his cheekbone. ”You need to face her as she really is. Intimate or not, you need to help her. For her sake. And maybe for the ship.”

She paused.

”She tore the ship apart, yes. But in that process, she also prevented a surge of high Dawn Meter readings. The women who went to her—they didn’t turn. They were lost, but they didn’t die.”

Zhao absorbed this.

”We’ll figure her out together,” Aida said. ”Make her able to have companionship again. Real companionship.”

He nodded. ”I’ll do what I can.”

She kissed him—soft, brief, a seal on a promise.

Then she settled back against his chest, and they watched the moon for a while.

Aida’s voice was quiet when she spoke again.

”There’s something else.”

Zhao waited.

”The long-term changes to ship culture—the clubs, the events, the normalization—they’re important. But they don’t address the immediate need for treatment.” She paused. ”And there’s one more urgent issue.”

He felt her tension. ”What?”

”Carmona.”

His arms tightened around her.

”Her reading is in the mid-sixties. Climbing. She needs treatment.” Aida’s voice was steady, but he could hear the strain beneath it. ”I’ll feed her tomorrow. I can compartmentalize job and intimacy, but Carmona—” She shook her head. ”She’ll be a hard sell. I’m not expecting you or Mei-Lin to do it. As treatment coordinator, it’s my job.”

”No.”

The word came out sharper than he intended.

Aida turned to look at him.

”No,” he said again. ”I won’t let you do it. I’ll treat her myself.”

”Aida—”

”It’s safer for me. I’m immune. And it’s my primary duty as a vector—and as a husband—to protect my family.” He held her gaze. ”I won’t let Carmona be that close to you.”

Aida was silent for a long moment.

”Will you need me there?”

He shook his head. ”I won’t let her near any of you. Victoria will stand by. Carmona will be in full harness. I’ll be quick. Clinical.”

She searched his face. Then she nodded.

”Okay.”

She kissed him—longer this time, deeper—and then laid her head on his chest. The ship rolled beneath them. The moon drifted behind a cloud.

”Where do you see this ship going?” she asked.

He felt the weight of the question. The exhaustion beneath it.

”I’m tired, Zhao.” Her voice was barely a whisper. ”The treatment duties, the pressure, the constant external threats—it’s wearing me down. The only thing keeping me going is the family.” She held him tighter. ”You.”

He put his hand over her head, kissed her forehead.

”You’re thinking too much.”

She laughed, a small, tired sound. ”That’s supposed to be my line.”

”Just deal with the problems one step at a time.” He stroked her hair. ”We can plan, but we can’t rely only on planning. Survival demands quick adaptation. That’s what we’ll do. Together.”

She was quiet for a long time. Then she nodded against his chest.

The water in the bath was cooling. The moon emerged from behind the cloud, silver on the waves.

They stayed there, holding each other, until the cold drove them inside.

Zhao wrapped Aida in a towel, then wrapped himself in one, and they padded barefoot through the dark Willow. Vivienne had shifted in her sleep, her head now on Mei-Lin’s shoulder. Mei-Lin had her arm around Vivienne’s waist. They looked peaceful.

Zhao pulled the blanket from the back of the sofa and spread it over them. Vivienne murmured something, smiled in her sleep, and did not wake.

Aida was already in bed, her back to him, the sheet pulled to her waist. He slid in behind her, wrapped his arm around her, and pressed his face to her hair.

”Thank you,” she whispered.

”For what?”

”For coming home.”

He kissed her shoulder. ”Always.”

He closed his eyes. The ship rolled. The Willow was warm. And somewhere on this ship, Alexis was sleeping—or not sleeping—and Carmona was chained in her cell, her Dawn Meter climbing, waiting for a treatment that would come from the hands of the man she had tried to destroy.

Zhao pushed the thoughts away.

One step at a time.

Tomorrow, he would check on Alexis. Tomorrow, he would prepare for Carmona. Tomorrow, the hunt would draw closer.

Tonight, he was home.

He held Aida tighter and let sleep take him.
