Dawn Experiment

#Day 36 - 12:30

The medical bay smelled of antiseptic and something else—something green and earthy that Vivienne recognized as Mei-Lin’s doing. A small clay pot sat on the bedside table, steam rising from its surface, carrying the scent of ginger and herbs she couldn’t name.

Sophie lay on the bed, her eyes closed, her face pale against the white pillow. The bandage on her shoulder was fresh, the wound beneath healing but not yet healed. An IV line snaked from her arm to a bag hanging from the ceiling hook, the liquid inside clear and slow.

Vivienne stood at the threshold for a moment, watching her mother breathe. Sophie Laurent, who had always seemed untouchable, indestructible—lying here like anyone else. Fragile. Human.

She crossed the room, her footsteps soft on the tile, and touched Sophie’s hand.

The reaction was immediate. Sophie’s eyes opened—not startled, not afraid, just aware. Her gaze found Vivienne’s face, and something in her expression softened.

”Vivienne.”

”Mother.” Vivienne pulled a chair close to the bed and sat. ”How are you feeling?”

Sophie shifted, winced, settled. ”I have been through worse. I will recover.”

Behind them, the door swished open. Mei-Lin entered carrying a thermal container, its surface still warm from the kitchenette. She bowed her head slightly to Sophie—not quite a bow, not quite a nod, somewhere in between.

”Sophie. I brought you soup. Traditional Chinese medicine recipe. It helps recovery after surgery or physical injury.”

She set the container on the bedside table beside the clay pot, unscrewed the lid, and steam billowed out. The smell intensified—fish, ginger, and something deeper, earthier, that Vivienne couldn’t identify.

Sophie looked at the soup. Her expression didn’t change, but her nostrils flared slightly. She sat up slowly, careful of her shoulder, and took the container in her hands.

She lifted it to her nose. Her face twisted.

”What did you put in this?”

Mei-Lin’s smile was patient. ”Fish soup. With fresh herbs I grew myself. It might smell strange, but it tastes good. I promise.”

Sophie stared into the liquid. For a moment, Vivienne thought she might refuse. Then Sophie held her breath, lifted the container to her lips, and drank.

She swallowed. Paused. Breathed.

”I can handle this,” she said, and drank more.

When the container was half-empty, she set it down and looked at Mei-Lin. ”I apologize for my reaction. I know this is not the time to be picky with food. This is survival. Any recovery food is appreciated.”

Mei-Lin nodded. ”Finish it when you can. The herbs work best when the soup is warm.”

Sophie picked up the container and finished it.

She set it down, wiped her mouth with the back of her hand—a gesture so undignified, so unlike her, that Vivienne almost smiled—and looked at her daughter.

”You did well,” Sophie said. ”Against Carmona. I heard what happened. Congratulations.”

Vivienne shook her head. ”It wasn’t just me. It was Chen. Victoria. Everyone.”

”You led them.” Sophie’s voice was firm. ”That is what matters.”

A pause. Then Vivienne said, ”Carmona is in the holding cell. We captured her.”

Sophie’s eyes widened. ”Captured? Not executed?”

”Chen needs her alive. For information. For her genes.”

Sophie was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded slowly. ”Carmona’s genes were chosen by the Commission. She might be useful after all.”

She looked down at her hands, then back at Vivienne. ”I should have seen Sabine coming. I knew the Commission would send a spy. I suspected her, but I didn’t have enough proof to arrest her.” Her jaw tightened. ”That will not happen again.”

Vivienne waited.

”I want to form a small team,” Sophie said. ”Two or three people. Counter-intelligence. We screen the crew, the guest list, anyone who comes aboard. We look for patterns, connections, anything that suggests Commission collaboration.”

Vivienne frowned. ”That would mean constant surveillance. The crew will feel watched. Demoralized.”

”Counter-intelligence has a cost.” Sophie’s voice was steady. ”But the cost of inaction is higher. Sabine almost killed you. She almost killed me. Is that not proof enough?”

Vivienne thought of the knife. Of her mother’s body between her and the blade. Of the blood spreading across white fabric.

”Who do you have in mind?” she asked.

Sophie shook her head. ”I need to review the files first. I will report back when I have candidates.”

Vivienne wanted to push, but the exhaustion on her mother’s face stopped her. Later. There would be time later.

She looked at the Dawn Meter on Sophie’s wrist. 55%. High—too high for someone recovering from injury.

”Your viral load is climbing,” Vivienne said. ”You need treatment.”

Sophie followed her gaze. ”I know.”

”Mei-Lin is here. Her milk is effective. It might be easier on your body than—”

”No.”

Sophie’s voice was sharp. She caught herself, softened. ”I do not wish to be treated by Mei-Lin. I will wait for Zhao.”

Vivienne frowned. ”You’re weakened. Mei-Lin’s milk is gentler. More appropriate.”

Sophie’s jaw tightened. ”It is not that I object to sucking another woman’s breast. I find the taste of human milk unappetizing.”

Vivienne stared at her. Then she said, quietly, ”You just said we should not be picky about food. Survival, you said.”

Sophie opened her mouth, closed it. Her eyes flickered—something there, behind the mask, that Vivienne could not read.

”I understand what I said,” Sophie replied finally. ”This is different.”

Vivienne watched her mother’s face. She was holding something back. Not about the taste—something else. Something she would not say.

Vivienne wanted to ask. But Sophie’s health was fragile, and pushing her now might do more harm than good.

She stood. ”I will ask Aida to schedule you with Zhao.”

Sophie nodded. Her hand was already reaching for the tablet on the bedside table, her eyes scanning the screen, already working.

Vivienne turned to leave. At the door, she looked back.

Her mother was scrolling through the crew manifest, her face intent, her injured arm held carefully still. Already building her list. Already planning.

We still don’t see eye to eye, Vivienne thought. I still can’t forgive her for being absent. For choosing the Commission’s game over me.

But she had been there when it mattered. When the knife came, Sophie had not hesitated.

That was enough. For now.

Mei-Lin kissed her briefly at the door—soft, quick, a promise—and Vivienne walked toward the bridge.

#Day 36 - 13:08

The Willow was quiet when Mei-Lin returned.

The tea tree stood in its corner, leaves dark and glossy. The jasmine bloomed by the bath. The ceramic cups waited on the low table, arranged in their circle.

Mei-Lin had posted the notice on the communal board in the atrium and on B-Deck three days ago. Herb Club. Interest meeting. The Willow. All welcome.

She had not expected anyone to come.

She had told herself it didn’t matter. She would continue her research anyway. Focus on the results. The club was just an experiment—if no one came, she would try something else.

But her eyes kept drifting to the door.

She was pruning the tea tree when the door opened.

Her head snapped up.

Aida walked in, crossed to the table, and picked up her tablet. ”I’ll be home late. Working on the spa with the engineers. Renovations.”

Then she was gone.

Mei-Lin stared at the closed door. Then she shook her head, smiled at herself, and returned to the tea tree.

She selected the youngest leaves—pale green, tender—and carried them to the wok. The heat was gentle, the leaves hissing softly as she tossed them, drying them without burning. When they were ready, she spread them on a wooden plate to cool.

Her herb cabinet stood against the far wall—a small wooden chest with dozens of tiny drawers, each labeled in her careful handwriting. Ginger. Ginseng. Astragalus. Licorice. Goji. She had collected everything she could find, from Stavros’s ship, from the hydroponic bay, from the few dried stores that had survived the pandemic.

She was measuring the weight of a new mixture when NUWA’s voice came from the wall speaker.

”Mei-Lin. The combination you requested requires further testing. The concentration of active compounds varies significantly between batches of fresh herbs. I recommend—”

The doorbell rang.

Mei-Lin’s hand froze. She set down the scale, wiped her fingers on her apron, and crossed to the door.

She opened it.

Noor Al-Sayeed stood in the corridor, a ceramic pot in her hands, her dark hair pulled back in a practical knot. She was tall—taller than Mei-Lin—with olive skin and eyes the color of honey. Her smile was shy, almost hesitant.

”Mei-Lin. I hope I’m not interrupting.”

Mei-Lin stepped aside. ”Not at all. Come in.”

Noor stepped inside, and her eyes went wide.

She had seen the Willow before, but never like this—never with the herb cabinet open, the tea tree pruned, the jasmine blooming. The room smelled of earth and green things, of drying leaves and warm soil.

”I brought you a gift,” Noor said, holding out the pot.

Mei-Lin looked inside. Her breath caught.

Ginseng.

Not the dried root she had seen in photographs, but a living plant, its leaves dark and veined, its stem thick with age. The pot was unusual—a core in the center with holes drilled through, allowing the roots to extend outward into a nutrient solution that filled the outer chamber.

”This is...” Mei-Lin’s voice was barely a whisper. ”This is one of the most valuable ingredients in herbal medicine.”

Noor’s smile widened. ”I’ve been working on the hydroponic system. The core pot lets the lateral roots spread without disturbing the main plant. Easier to harvest small amounts without killing it.”

Mei-Lin hugged her.

Noor stiffened for a moment, surprised, then relaxed. Her arms came up, awkward but warm, and she held Mei-Lin for a moment longer than necessary.

When they pulled apart, Mei-Lin was already carrying the ginseng to a spot beside the tea tree—shaded, protected, where the morning light would reach it but not burn it.

”It’s perfect,” she said. ”Thank you.”

Noor wandered the room, her fingers brushing the leaves of the tea tree, the petals of the jasmine. She pulled out her phone—an old model, restored, its screen cracked but functional—and began taking photos.

”NUWA,” she said, ”identify these plants.”

The AI’s voice responded, calm and precise, listing names and properties. Noor nodded, absorbing, learning.

Mei-Lin watched her for a moment. ”You’ve learned a lot. About botany.”

Noor shrugged. ”It was a hobby. Before.” She set down her phone, touched a jasmine bloom. ”My family is in PR—public relations. I worked for them. Handled their image, their media, their damage control. The usual aristocratic nonsense.” She smiled, a little wry. ”Plants were my escape. When Verne made everyone crew, I volunteered for hydroponics. NUWA taught me the rest.”

Mei-Lin nodded. That was how it worked on the Blue Oasis. Everyone had been something else before. Models, socialites, heirs, celebrities. Now they were gardeners and engineers and security guards, learning as they went.

”Sit,” Mei-Lin said. ”I’ll make tea.”

They sat under the slanted window, the afternoon light gold on their faces, and talked. About plants, about herbs, about the hydroponic system Noor had designed. About the pandemic, and the ship, and the strange lives they were building.

Noor set down her cup.

”Can I ask you something?”

Mei-Lin nodded.

”Why did you start the club? The herb club, I mean.”

Mei-Lin considered the question. ”I was already researching how to enhance treatment by augmenting my milk with herbal diets. I’ve made breakthroughs—some of them. But sometimes the work is lonely. It would be better if I could share knowledge with others.”

Noor nodded slowly. ”I’m happy to share. But...” She hesitated. ”How do we verify the results? It gets personal. With breast milk.”

Mei-Lin shook her head, smiling. ”That’s why I started the club. To get comfortable with the topic. To make it not awkward.”

Noor looked down at her hands. ”I’ve never done treatment with you. Only with Aida.”

”How did it feel?”

”Awkward.” Noor’s voice was quiet. ”Less so now—I’ve done it a few times. But still awkward.”

Mei-Lin waited.

”Sometimes I feel... attracted to her. Aida. More as we get comfortable.” Noor looked up, her expression worried. ”But it’s not romantic. Not really. It’s just—she’s kind, and patient, and when she touches me I feel safe. That’s not the same as wanting to be with someone, is it?”

Mei-Lin reached across the table and took her hand.

”In the old world, people would say it is. They’d say attraction is attraction, and if you feel something, you must want something. But we’re not in the old world anymore.”

She squeezed Noor’s fingers.

”You can like someone’s skill without wanting them. You can appreciate their presence without needing to possess them. A masseuse can give you pleasure without you falling in love. The same is true here.”

Noor stared at her. ”You’re not jealous? Of Aida? Of the people she treats?”

Mei-Lin was quiet for a moment. ”Sometimes. I’m learning to let go of it. Aida is free to love whoever she wants. If I held onto jealousy, there would be no family on this boat. The nature of our work is intimacy—with Zhao, with each other, with strangers. If I couldn’t share, I would be alone.”

Noor’s hand tightened on hers. ”I don’t pretend to understand. But I’m trying.”

Mei-Lin looked at Noor’s wrist. The Dawn Meter glowed 49%.

”When was your last treatment?”

Noor followed her gaze. ”A few days ago. Aida. I was scheduled for another in two days, but—” She shrugged. ”My meter is climbing.”

Mei-Lin released her hand. ”Would you like to taste my milk?”

Noor’s eyes widened. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again.

”You don’t have to,” Mei-Lin said quickly. ”I only ask because my milk has been enhanced. It produces hormones that can stimulate lactation in other women. It takes time—you won’t lactate today. But it’s a start. If you’re interested in learning—”

”I am.” Noor’s voice was steady. ”I want to know more. About lactation, about herbs, about how it all works. And my meter is high. I might as well do it now.”

She took a breath. Exhaled.

”Show me.”

Mei-Lin unbuttoned her blouse.

The fabric parted, revealing her left breast—full, heavy, the nipple already dark and glistening. A bead of milk formed at the tip, catching the afternoon light.

Noor stared.

”Recently I’ve been enhancing my milk to help Vivienne lactate,” Mei-Lin said. ”The captain needs to feed Chen. Her viral resistance is weak. This is what family does—we support each other. Even when it means sacrifice.”

Noor’s gaze moved from Mei-Lin’s breast to her face. ”You’re doing this for her? For Chen?”

”For all of them.” Mei-Lin smiled. ”For us.”

Noor leaned closer. Her lips touched the nipple—hesitant, questioning. Mei-Lin’s hand came up to cradle the back of her head, gentle, patient.

Noor sucked.

The milk came—warm, sweet, with an undertone of something herbal. Noor’s eyes widened. She pulled back, licking her lips.

”It’s different from Aida’s. Creamier. Sweeter.”

Mei-Lin nodded. ”I’ve been eating herbs to modify it. The milk now carries compounds that stimulate lactation in other women. Not immediately—it takes days, sometimes weeks of regular stimulation. But it’s a start.”

Noor stared at her. ”You’re saying I could lactate? Eventually?”

”If you want to. If you keep drinking my milk, and if you stimulate your breasts regularly, your body may begin producing its own.” Mei-Lin touched Noor’s cheek. ”It’s not magic. It takes time. But it’s possible.”

Noor was quiet for a long moment. Then she unbuttoned her own blouse.

Her breasts were round, firm, the nipples dark against her olive skin. She had never lactated before—had never even considered it. But the idea of becoming a healer, of producing medicine from her own body, was strangely appealing.

Mei-Lin guided her to the mattress under the slanted window. Noor lay back, her hair spreading across the pillow, her hands at her sides.

Mei-Lin moved on top of her—not straddling, but hovering, her breasts dangling above Noor’s face. The milk dripped down, landing on Noor’s lips, her chin, her throat.

Noor caught the drops with her tongue, then closed her mouth around Mei-Lin’s nipple and sucked.

The milk flowed.

Mei-Lin’s hands found Noor’s breasts—cupping, massaging, kneading. The tissue was soft, responsive, the nipples hardening under her touch. Noor moaned around her mouthful, her hips shifting on the mattress.

Mei-Lin could smell her now—the warm, musky scent of arousal rising from beneath Noor’s skirt. Her own body responded, her clitoris swelling, her juice beginning to flow. The silver ring on her clitoral hood caught the light—three tiny stones, white for Vivienne, red for Aida, yellow for Zhao, still warm from her body heat. Noor would see it soon, would ask about it. That was fine. Mei-Lin was not ashamed of her promise.

She slipped her hand inside Noor’s skirt.

Noor’s thighs parted, welcoming. Her pubic hair was neatly trimmed, dark against her pale skin. She was wet—already wet, her juice slick on Mei-Lin’s fingers.

Mei-Lin circled her clitoris, gentle at first, then firmer. Noor gasped, her mouth releasing Mei-Lin’s breast, her head falling back against the pillow.

”Like that,” she whispered. ”Please—like that.”

Mei-Lin lowered her mouth to Noor’s other breast, sucking, drawing the nipple between her lips. There was no milk yet—that would take time—but the nipple hardened, and Noor moaned, her hands coming up to cup Mei-Lin’s head.

Then Mei-Lin pulled back, positioning herself above Noor. With practiced fingers, she massaged her own breast until a thin stream of milk arced directly onto Noor’s exposed vulva. Noor gasped at the warm wetness, then moaned as the liquid pooled between her folds. Mei-Lin leaned closer, continuing to express milk with one hand while her other hand gathered the moisture, working it methodically across Noor’s inner lips and around her clitoris. Two fingers slipped inside, coating the vaginal walls, ensuring the milk would be absorbed where it would be most effective.

”This is how it works best,” Mei-Lin murmured. ”The milk needs to reach your bloodstream. Oral ingestion helps, but direct application to mucous membranes—the vagina, the rectum—is more efficient.”

She pressed deeper, and Noor cried out, her hips rising off the mattress. Mei-Lin’s fingers curled, found the spot, and Noor’s body convulsed.

She came quickly—too quickly, her breath coming in sharp gasps, her inner walls clenching around Mei-Lin’s fingers. Mei-Lin held her through it, whispering soft words, her other hand still massaging Noor’s breast.

When the spasms faded, Noor lay panting, her eyes half-closed.

”Your turn,” she whispered.

She reached up, pulled Mei-Lin down, and their bodies shifted. Noor’s hands found Mei-Lin’s skirt, pushed it up, and stopped.

Underneath, Mei-Lin wore panties with a slit cut directly down the center—her favorite pair, because the slit let her clitoral ring dangle freely without catching on fabric. The ring was fully visible through the opening, the three stones glinting.

Noor stared at it. ”What is that?”

Mei-Lin smiled. ”A promise. White for Vivienne. Red for Aida. Yellow for Zhao. I bound myself to them. They bound themselves to me.”

Noor reached out, touched the ring. Her finger traced the stones, gentle, curious. ”It’s beautiful.”

She leaned down and took the ring between her lips, tugged gently. Mei-Lin gasped—the sensation was sharp, electric, the pull on her sensitive clitoris almost too much. Noor released the ring and pressed her mouth to Mei-Lin’s vulva, her tongue finding the clitoris beneath the ring, circling it.

Mei-Lin’s hips bucked. She reached down, spread her own folds, and guided Noor’s mouth to where she needed it. Noor sucked, licked, pressed her tongue inside, and Mei-Lin came with a cry, her juice flooding Noor’s face.

They lay tangled together on the mattress, breathing hard, their skin slick with sweat.

Noor laughed.

”What?” Mei-Lin asked.

”It wasn’t so bad.” Noor turned her head, looked at her. ”In fact, I liked it.”

She held up her wrist. The Dawn Meter glowed 37%.

”The meter agrees with me,” she said, and grinned.

Mei-Lin kissed her forehead.

They showered together, the water hot, the steam thick. Noor washed Mei-Lin’s back, and Mei-Lin washed hers, and they talked about nothing—about the ginseng, about the hydroponic system, about the strange beauty of the ship’s interior in the afternoon light.

When they dressed, Noor hesitated at the door.

”What if I like you?” she asked. ”After several sessions? What if I want more?”

Mei-Lin smiled. ”Then we enjoy it together, when we can. And if not, we still have fun.” She touched Noor’s cheek. ”Feelings can develop in any direction. That’s fine with me. But at the end of the day, my home is the Willow. I have Zhao, Aida, Vivienne, Chen. That will not change. That’s enough for me, no matter what happens with others.”

Noor stared at her for a long moment. Then she hugged her—tight, fierce, grateful.

”I’m beginning to like this new arrangement,” she said. ”Can we meet again? Can I bring a friend?”

Mei-Lin nodded. ”I’ll let you know when I’m available.”

Noor waved goodbye and disappeared down the corridor.

Mei-Lin stood in the doorway, watching her go.

One person, she thought. Better than I expected.

She returned to the herb cabinet, her hands finding the scale, the dried leaves, the careful measurements. The work was not done—would never be done—but she felt lighter now. Happier.

She wanted to visit Aida at the spa, to see how the renovations were progressing. But the herbs needed weighing, the recipes needed testing, and NUWA was waiting for her data.

She measured, and mixed, and recorded, and smiled.

The Willow was quiet. But it was not empty.
