Dawn Experiment

#Day 32 - 17:40

The treatment suite was warm, the way it always was when the family gathered. Candles flickered on the low table, their light catching the curved glass of the slanted window, the dark water beyond, the soft pillows scattered across the lounge. Cultural artifacts lined the shelves now—Mei-Lin’s tea tree in its corner, Aida’s jasmine blooming by the bath, the ceramic cups from some long-ago galley, each one chipped but cherished.

Zhao stood at the window, watching the horizon. The sky was thick with clouds, the wind strong enough to make the ship shudder, but the storm was passing south of them. Linh had promised only the edge—high winds, rough seas, nothing the Blue Oasis couldn’t handle.

Behind him, the suite buzzed with preparation.

Kim was arguing with Mei-Lin. Again.

”It’s kimchi,” Kim insisted, pointing at the small bowl of pickled vegetables. ”Fermented cabbage with chili. That’s Korean. You can’t just claim it’s Chinese because you added different spices.”

Mei-Lin’s smile was serene, infuriating. ”It’s pao cai. My grandmother’s recipe. The chili came from the New World, yes, but the technique—”

”Technique? You soaked vegetables in salt water. That’s not—”

”It’s delicious,” Zhao said, not turning from the window. ”That’s what matters.”

Kim threw a pillow at him. It bounced off his shoulder and landed on the floor. He didn’t pick it up.

Aida emerged from the kitchenette, carrying a small pot. The smell hit him immediately—seaweed, fish, the clean, savory scent of miso that he hadn’t smelled since before the world ended. She had been saving the ingredients. Frugally, carefully, for a special occasion.

He turned. ”You made miso soup?”

Aida’s smile was soft. ”For our guests.”

The pot joined the spread on the low table: Mei-Lin’s steamed Azu Ike, glistening with ginger and scallions; the egg fried rice, golden and fragrant; the pickled vegetables that Kim and Mei-Lin were still arguing about; and now the miso soup, dark and steaming, with tiny cubes of tofu that must have come from Stavros’s stash.

The doorbell rang.

Zhao crossed the room, his bare feet silent on the carpet. He opened the door.

Emeka stood in the corridor, dressed in clean clothes that smelled of the aft deck soap—not the fish and diesel Kim had described. Behind him, Chidi and Adaeze waited, their faces soft with something that looked like nervousness. They had used the outdoor shower. They had wanted to be presentable.

But the gift in Emeka’s hands smelled exactly like Kim had described.

It was a large bag, cloth, stained with salt and smoke. The smell of dried fish punched through the corridor—intense, briny, the smell of survival.

Zhao stepped aside. ”You didn’t have to bring anything. You should save the fish for your crew.”

Emeka stepped inside, and the warmth of the suite stopped him. He stood just past the threshold, his eyes moving across the room—the candles, the pillows, the tea tree, the curved window with its view of the dark water. His mouth opened. Closed.

”This is...” He shook his head. ”Beautiful.”

Chidi and Adaeze followed, their eyes wide. Adaeze’s hand found her husband’s arm, squeezing.

Zhao guided them inside. ”Welcome.”

Vivienne rose from the lounge, crossed to them, and hugged Emeka. No gloves. Her arms wrapped around him, and she held him for a moment longer than a handshake.

”Thank you for coming,” she said.

Emeka’s voice was thick. ”Thank you for having us.”

Chidi looked at Aida. His eyes moved to her face, then away—quickly, the way they always did. Zhao saw it. He had stopped being jealous weeks ago. Now it was just a reminder of how far they had all come.

Adaeze was looking at Mei-Lin, at the food on the table, at the steam rising from the miso soup. Her lips parted. ”Vegetables,” she whispered. ”And seaweed.”

Mei-Lin smiled. ”Eat as much as you want.”

They settled around the table, the cushions shifting to make room. Chen was already there, at the far end, her blind eyes turned toward the sound of the new voices. She had been quiet all evening, her hands wrapped around her cup, her face calm.

Emeka set the bag on the table. ”A gift. Dried salted Azu Ike. Smoked with coconut husk for six hours.” He paused. ”I have been saving it. For a special occasion. Or when the crew needed high morale.”

Zhao reached for the bag, then stopped. ”You should keep it. Your crew—”

”My crew insisted.” Emeka’s voice was firm. ”This is the least we can do.”

Vivienne opened the bag. The smell intensified—smoky, salty, the scent of the ocean and fire. She breathed it in.

”Thank you,” she said.

Emeka gestured to Chidi, who lifted a covered dish from a second bag. ”We also brought our own cooking. Fried smoked Azu Ike. Our local cuisine.” He lifted the lid, and the smell changed—richer, oilier, with something underneath that Zhao couldn’t name. ”Palm oil. We saved it. For a special occasion.”

The dish joined the spread, dark and glistening, the fish broken into large chunks. Mei-Lin leaned forward, her eyes bright.

”What’s the recipe?” she asked.

Emeka laughed. ”You want to steal our secrets?”

”I want to preserve them.”

His smile faded, just a fraction. Then he nodded. ”Coconut husk smoke. Six hours. Then salt, and more smoke. When you fry it, use palm oil if you have it. If not—” He shrugged. ”Any oil will do. But palm oil is best.”

Mei-Lin was already taking mental notes. Zhao watched her, and he felt something warm in his chest. Another piece of knowledge. Another culture. Being saved.

They toasted with cups of tea—no wine, no alcohol, just the warmth of the brew and the clink of ceramic.

Emeka raised his cup. ”To the Blue Oasis. To our friends. To survival.”

They drank.

Vivienne set her cup down. ”How is your crew holding up?”

Emeka was quiet for a moment. ”We lost one. In the attack.” His voice was steady, but his hands tightened on his cup. ”The other five are recovering. The doctors on your ship have been... generous.”

”I’m sorry,” Vivienne said.

”We are alive.” Emeka looked around the table. ”When I saw the speedboats, when I saw the men with their guns, I thought... this is the end. We have no weapons. No training. We are fishermen, not soldiers.” He paused. ”But your people came. Your drones. Your sniper.” He looked at Kim, at the bandage on her leg. ”You came.”

Kim shrugged, uncomfortable. ”I was already there.”

”You stayed.” Emeka’s voice was firm. ”You could have left. You did not.”

The silence stretched. Kim looked down at her cup.

Adaeze spoke, her voice soft. ”The crew has been carving.” She touched her own chest, where a pendant hung—wood, roughly shaped, but Zhao could see the lines of it. A ship. A wave. ”The Blue Oasis. On their belongings. They feel safer when they see your lights on the horizon.”

Zhao felt something tighten in his throat.

Emeka gestured at the room—at the candles, the pillows, the curved window, the warmth. ”Look at this place. Who among my crew would even dare to dream of living in such a room?” He looked at Zhao, at Aida, at Vivienne, at Mei-Lin, at Chen. ”And who would dream that, at the end of the world, they could have such a beautiful family?”

Zhao didn’t know what to say. Beside him, Aida’s hand found his under the table.

Emeka continued, his voice softer. ”Many of my men... they will probably never have a woman again. Not like this. Not a family.” He looked at Chidi and Adaeze, at the way they sat close, their shoulders touching. ”But since we started traveling together, since we started following you into unknown waters...” He paused. ”Something has sparked in them. They want to see what comes next. They want to see the world alongside the Blue Oasis.”

Zhao felt pride. And guilt. The disparity between the ships was so wide—the luxury of the Blue Oasis, the poverty of the Mother Mercy. The women who had been chosen for their beauty, the men who had been left behind.

He looked at Vivienne. ”Maybe they could visit more often. When resources and time allow. Activities together. Meals like this.”

Vivienne nodded slowly. ”I would like that.”

But Zhao saw the unease in her eyes. She was thinking about Carmona. About the Commission. About the risks that the Mother Mercy would face if they stayed close.

He filed the thought away. Tonight was about friendship. About stories and laughter and good food from cultures that the Commission had tried to erase.

Adaeze was eating the miso soup, her eyes closed, her face soft. ”I missed this,” she whispered. ”Vegetables. Seaweed. I never thought I would miss vegetables.”

Aida smiled. ”There is more.”

Chidi was eating the egg fried rice, his movements quick, almost shy. He looked up, caught Zhao watching, and nodded. Just once. A thank you that didn’t need words.

They ate. They talked. Emeka told stories about his village—the festivals, the fishing competitions, the way the old men would sit on the beach and argue about the best spots to cast their nets. Mei-Lin asked questions, and he answered, his voice warm with memory.

Chen said nothing. She sat at the end of the table, her hands wrapped around her cup, her blind eyes turned toward the sound of Emeka’s voice. Zhao watched her. She was listening. Filing. Calculating.

At one point, Emeka glanced toward Chen, hesitated, then lowered his voice. ”The woman at the end of the table—she has been quiet all evening. Is she part of your...?” He left the question unfinished, his eyes moving between Zhao and Chen.

Zhao looked at Chen. ”She is family.”

Chen’s lips curved. Just a fraction.

The evening wore on. The candles burned low. The wind outside grew stronger, rattling the windows, but the suite stayed warm.

When the guests finally rose to leave, Emeka clasped Zhao’s hand. ”Thank you. For everything.”

Zhao shook his head. ”Thank you for coming.”

They hugged—Vivienne, Aida, Mei-Lin. Even Kim, awkward but sincere. Adaeze kissed Aida’s cheek, whispered something in her ear that made Aida’s eyes go soft.

Then they were gone, the door closing behind them, the corridor swallowing their footsteps.

Zhao stood at the window, watching the lifeboat carry them back to the Mother Mercy. The ship’s lights were small on the dark water, bobbing in the rough seas.

Vivienne came up beside him, her hand finding his. ”You did well tonight.”

”I didn’t do anything.”

”You made them feel welcome. You made them feel like equals.” She leaned into him. ”That’s not nothing.”

Behind them, Kim was helping Mei-Lin clear the table. Aida was pouring tea for Chen. The suite was warm, the candles flickering, the smell of fish and miso and friendship still in the air.

Zhao looked at the Mother Mercy’s lights, small and distant on the dark water.

They’re going to be okay, he thought. We’ll keep them safe.

The future remained a mystery to him, to all of them really—all except Chen, perhaps, with her calculations and her silence.

But tonight, they had shared a meal. Tonight, they had laughed. Tonight, they had been human together.

He held Vivienne’s hand and watched the lights until they disappeared over the horizon.
