Dawn Experiment

#Day 33 — 14:30

The Blue Oasis was a dark shape on the horizon, its windows black, its decks empty. The Red Solstice cut through the choppy seas, its engines pushing hard, its crew tense and ready.

Carmona stood at the forward windows, her hands on the rail, her eyes fixed on her prey. Six hours of pursuit, and now she could see them. The ship that had humiliated her. The crew that had burned her vessel and sent her crawling back to the Commission like a whipped dog.

She checked her monitor. The Blue Oasis’s crew was still scrambling—she could see figures moving on the decks, could see the chaos that had erupted after the riot. No organized resistance. No coordinated defense.

They don’t even know I’m here.

She thought about hailing them. Demanding they hand over Zhao and Chen—and Victoria. She smiled at the thought of Victoria in her torture room, of the long, slow hours of payback.

But where was the fun in that?

Somewhere in the back of her mind, a voice whispered that a peaceful resolution was smarter. Safer. That the Commission wanted the vector and the blind girl alive, and that delivering them would restore her standing.

Then she remembered the fire. The Red Solstice burning beneath her feet. The swim through dark water, the submarine surfacing, the shame of being rescued by the very people she had come to destroy.

No more chances. No more half measures. I want them all dead.

She turned to her crew. ”Fly the drones. Scan the area—front, sides, far and wide. I want to know if anything is out there.”

The drones launched, their rotors buzzing, their cameras sweeping the gray water. Minutes passed. The screens remained clear.

”All clear, Captain.”

”Release the crawler boats. All three. Intercept the Blue Oasis.”

The tenders were lowered, their engines roaring to life. They sped across the waves, closing the distance, their grapples ready. When they reached the Blue Oasis, the hooks shot upward, catching the railings, pulling the boats against the hull.

Carmona watched the feed. The crawlers were released—hatches opening, the creatures leaping onto the deck, swarming through the corridors. She saw crew members panicking, trying to fight back, being torn apart. The security team fired, taking down some of the crawlers, but there were too many.

She smiled. She laughed.

This is payback. This is for everything.

Then she noticed the lifeboats.

Four of them, lowering from the sides, their orange hulls bright against the gray water. The crew was fleeing. Smart of them. Pointless, but smart.

She pointed. ”Intercept those lifeboats. Now.”

The Red Solstice changed course, speeding toward the fleeing boats. Carmona ordered her security team to prepare for boarding. They lined up outside the bridge, rifles ready, faces hard.

As they drew closer, something felt wrong.

The lifeboats were not like any she had seen. Their hulls were reinforced, their windows sealed. And on the front and back of each—

Grapple hooks.

Her blood went cold.

”Evasive—”

The explosion cut her off.

The aft of the Red Solstice bucked, the engines dying in a spray of fire and smoke. Carmona grabbed the rail, steadying herself, her ears ringing.

”Report!”

”Drone attack, Captain. It came from behind—very high altitude. We didn’t detect it.”

Behind? She thought of the white box, the debris she had dismissed. But no—that was impossible. The box had been just debris.

Chen.

Before she could speak, the first lifeboat grappled onto the rail. Its hatch opened, and Carmona saw what was inside.

Crawlers. Dozens of them. Feasting on carcasses—the dead pirates from the earlier attack, their bodies torn and rotting. And there, at the front, a crawler had Sabine’s head in its mouth, her eyes still open, her face frozen in death.

The crew opened fire, but the crawlers were already swarming. They poured through the hatch, leaping onto the deck, tearing through the security team. Screams. Gunfire. The wet sound of bodies being pulled apart.

The second lifeboat grappled on. More crawlers. The third. The deck was lost.

Carmona saw the fourth lifeboat closing in, and she knew the battle was over.

She drew her sidearm and ran for the emergency stairs.

One of her crew saw her, reached for her arm. ”Captain—”

Carmona shot her in the chest. The woman fell without a sound.

No one else moved.

She locked the hatch behind her and climbed down.

#Day 33 — 15:10

The speedboat was fueled, armed, ready. Carmona climbed in, pressed the release, and felt the boat drop toward the water.

The hatch opened. Rain pounded her face. The sea was rough, the waves high, but the engine roared to life.

She was going to make it.

A crawler landed on the bow.

It screeched, clawing at the windshield, breaking through. Carmona shot it—once, twice, three times—and it fell, twitching, into the water.

She checked her side window. The Red Solstice was burning. She could see figures still fighting on the deck, could hear the distant crack of gunfire. But she was away. She was safe.

The engine smoked.

She tried to extinguish the fire—reached for the fire hydrant, sprayed the engine—but another shot rang out, and the second engine died.

No.

She looked toward the Blue Oasis. Through the rain, through the smoke, she saw a glint of light. A scope. A sniper.

Victoria.

She hit the hull of the speedboat in frustration, screamed until her throat was raw.

Not again. Not again.

The Red Solstice burned brighter now, flames licking at the bridge, the crawlers too many to count. No one would survive. No one except her.

There must be a way. Jump. Dive. The sniper won’t see me in the rain.

She was about to leap when the water beside her churned.

The submarine surfaced—Sanctuary, its hull dark, its hatch already open. A machine gun turret rose from the deck, aimed directly at her.

Vivienne’s voice came through a speaker, cold and clear.

”Lay down your weapon. Prepare to surrender.”

Carmona raised her hands. The rain soaked her hair, her clothes, her face.

Chen, she thought. This has Chen’s mark all over it. The Commission is toying with me. They’ve always been toying with me.

She thought of jumping. Maybe she would be shot. Maybe she would die. Better than more humiliation.

She did not jump. She did not have the courage.

She broke down and cried.

#Day 33 — 16:32

The bridge of the Blue Oasis was cold when Vivienne returned. The windows were still darkened, the consoles still powered down. A dark stain remained on the floor where Sabine had fallen—blood that had not yet been cleaned, a reminder of how close they had come to losing everything.

Linh was already at the helm, her hands on the controls, her eyes on the horizon. ”Where are we going?”

”North. Toward the Mother Mercy’s last known position.”

Linh nodded and set the course.

Vivienne opened the comms. ”Emeka. Emeka, come in.”

Static.

”Emeka, this is Captain Laurent. The Red Solstice is disabled. Carmona is in custody. The threat is neutralized. Please respond.”

Static.

She tried again. And again. And again.

Zhao was beside her. She had not heard him come in. His hand found hers, and she held on.

Aida, Kim, Elena—they arrived slowly, their faces tired, their eyes on the horizon. No one spoke.

The minutes passed.

”There,” Linh said, pointing.

A silhouette. A boat. The Mother Mercy.

Relief flooded through Vivienne—and then died as quickly as it came.

The boat was closing too fast. Drifting. Not moving under its own power.

No.

They drew closer, and she saw the crawler boat attached to its side. The deck was a scene of horror—bodies torn apart, blood slick on the wood, the crawlers still moving, still feeding.

No shouts. No screams. No signs of life.

Just the howling wind and the cracking of bones.

Linh pulled the Blue Oasis away before the crawlers could notice them.

Vivienne stood at the window, watching the Mother Mercy grow smaller on the horizon. Thirty people. Emeka. Chidi. The women who had slept in the captain’s cabin, the men who had given up their beds. All of them gone.

All the work we did to save them. All the help we gave. And it wasn’t enough.

Tears began to fall. She did not wipe them away.

Zhao’s arm came around her. Aida’s hand found her shoulder.

”Today we survived Carmona,” Vivienne whispered. ”But at what cost?”

She broke down, and they held her.

The ship sailed on, and the rain fell, and the sea swallowed the dead.
