Dawn Experiment

#Day 33 — 18:30

The bridge was dark, the windows still tinted, the consoles still dim. Vivienne stood at the forward rail, her hands gripping the cold metal, her eyes on the water below. The rain had stopped. The sea was calm, almost peaceful, as if the storm had never been.

Zhao was beside her, his hand on her back, warm and steady. Aida stood on her other side, silent, present. No one had spoken for a long time.

The door opened.

Chen walked in, Mei-Lin guiding her. Her blind eyes were turned toward the sound of Vivienne’s breathing, her face soft, her steps slow. Mei-Lin led her to where Vivienne stood, then stepped back.

Chen reached out, found Vivienne’s hand, and held it.

”I’m sorry,” she said. ”I could not find a better solution. I could not save the Mother Mercy.”

Vivienne’s tears had dried, but the ache in her chest was still there, raw and heavy. She did not speak. She could not.

Chen’s hand tightened on hers. ”You made the right choice as a captain. That is why the Blue Oasis is standing. That is why we survived what could have been a disaster.”

Vivienne shook her head. ”I tried to save them. I gave them motors, sails, food. And they still—” Her voice caught. ”How many Nigerians are even left in this world? We may have just witnessed the erasure of an entire culture. Emeka and Chidi might have been the last of them.”

”They did not die in vain.”

Vivienne looked at her. Chen’s face was calm, but there was something in her voice—a certainty, a weight.

”I monitored the attack from the submarine,” Chen said. ”I watched the video feed from the Blue Oasis’s cameras. I saw how many crawlers fit into each lifeboat. They barely fit. The creatures are mutating, changing shape. I could not predict exactly how many would fit. If there had been even a few more—” She paused. ”They would not have been able to lower the boats. The operation would have failed.”

She turned her face toward Vivienne.

”At least fifty crawlers attacked the Mother Mercy instead of the Blue Oasis. Fifty. That is the difference between victory and defeat. They did not die in vain. They saved us.”

Vivienne stared at her. The words settled into her chest, heavy but warm.

They saved us.

Chen’s voice softened. ”Survival has a cost. Winning has a cost. The Blue Oasis suffered so that the Mother Mercy could live. Now they have died so that we can live. One day, we may have to return the favor. So that others can live.”

Vivienne straightened. She wiped her face with the back of her hand, took a breath, and stood taller.

Chen was right. The Mother Mercy was gone, but their sacrifice meant something. They had bought the Blue Oasis time. They had bought the mission a chance.

And Vivienne was not going to waste it.

She cleared her throat. ”Summon the council. We need to meet.”

#Day 33 — 19:00

The bridge was crowded when the council arrived. Maggie, Victoria, Isabelle, Elena, Linh, Kim—they filed in, their faces tired, their eyes curious. Sophie was not there. She was still in medical, recovering. But the rest had come.

Vivienne stood at the head of the room, her hands on the rail, her back straight.

”The Mother Mercy is gone,” she said. ”Emeka, Chidi, and their crew are dead. They were good people. They did not deserve what happened to them.”

She paused, letting the silence settle.

”But they did not die in vain. Chen has confirmed that the crawlers that attacked them would have otherwise come for us. Their sacrifice bought us our survival.”

She looked around the room. No one spoke.

”We will honor them. Not with words—with action. We will survive. We will fight. And we will make sure their deaths mean something.”

She nodded to Chen.

Chen stepped forward, Mei-Lin at her side. Her blind eyes turned toward the council, her face calm.

”The ship is no longer connected to AURA,” she said. ”NUWA controls us now. The Commission cannot track us.”

A ripple went through the room. Maggie’s eyebrows rose. Victoria leaned forward.

”However, NUWA is not yet complete. She must be finished before we can bring the fight to the Commission. Before we can do that, we need to disappear. Change course. Make them lose us.”

Vivienne nodded. ”Where do we go?”

Chen turned her face toward the navigation screen. ”The seal hunt can continue. But not in South Georgia. The Commission will be watching there. Instead, we head for the southern coast of Argentina. The population of elephant seals is smaller, but it will be enough for our needs. And it will be easier to lose their tracking there.”

Linh was already calculating. ”We can make that course change within the hour.”

”And after the hunt?” Victoria asked. ”Where do we go then?”

Chen’s lips curved. ”We break the game.”

The room went still.

”What does that mean?” Vivienne asked.

Chen turned her face toward her. ”The Commission designed the race. They set the rules. As long as we follow their rules, they will always have the upper hand. It is time to change the game.”

”Change it how?” Isabelle asked.

”We awaken all the keys,” Chen said. ”Every twin in every stasis pod. We find a cure for the virus. We end the race before it can reach its conclusion.”

Victoria stepped forward, her face tight. ”I thought purity was the key. That’s what I was told. That’s what I believed for years. Purity would wake the keys.”

Chen shook her head slowly. ”Purity is not the key. Purity is the product. The genetic material extracted from the keys. The keys are not meant to wake. They are meant to be sacrificed.”

Victoria’s face went pale. Her hands clenched at her sides.

”All this time,” she said, her voice low. ”All these years. I thought if I could just reach Veronica, if I could just find a way—”

”Now you know the truth,” Chen said. ”The Commission never intended for them to wake. But we can change that. We will find a way. And when we do, we will use their own weapons against them.”

Victoria was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded, once. ”Tell me what I need to do.”

”First, we need to find someone. A genetic specialist. One of the Commission’s best. She helped design the vectors. She helped design the keys. She is being held in a hidden research laboratory on a remote island in the South Pacific.”

Vivienne frowned. ”You want us to rescue her.”

”She can help us find a cure. She can help us break the game.”

Victoria’s voice was hard. ”That’s going to need some serious firepower. We’re not exactly armed for a raid.”

”We will find weapons,” Chen said. ”We have time.”

Isabelle spoke up. ”That’s a long way. We’ll need supplies. Food, mostly. The rations are already tight.”

Zhao stepped forward. ”The seal hunt will provide food. Meat, fat, hide. Not just winter clothing. We can preserve it, stretch it.”

Vivienne looked around the room. ”Any objections?”

No one spoke.

”Then it’s decided. We hunt the seals off Argentina. Then we go south. We find this laboratory. We rescue the scientist.” She looked at Chen. ”And we break the game.”

Chen nodded.

#Day 33 — 19:30

The council was about to adjourn when Aida stepped forward.

”There is another matter,” she said.

Everyone turned to her.

”The sedated women have woken up,” Aida said. ”They are confused. They are frightened. They are trying to understand what happened to them, and to the ship. If they learn that Alexis is still in the holding cell—” She paused. ”They may riot again.”

Maggie’s jaw tightened. ”So what do you suggest? Let her go?”

”No,” Aida said. ”Not yet. But not forever, either.”

She looked at Vivienne.

”I propose we free her. But not in secret. We do it through a general assembly. We make the crew see what happened. The chaos on B-Deck. The way the ship was torn apart. The way Carmona used our weakness to attack. We show them the consequences.”

Vivienne frowned. ”And Alexis? What does she do during this assembly?”

”She makes her case. She tells her story. The council listens. The crew listens. And if her proposal makes sense—if we can find a way to integrate her without risking another collapse—then we consider it.”

Elena nodded slowly. ”The unity of the ship is important. Everyone needs to have a say.”

Victoria crossed her arms. ”You’re asking us to put the future of the ship to a vote. With a woman who nearly destroyed us.”

”I’m asking us to trust the crew,” Aida said. ”To let them see the truth. To let them decide.”

Vivienne was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded.

”We hold the assembly tomorrow. Aida, you will present the case. Alexis will speak. And the crew will decide.”

She looked around the room. ”This is a new world. We don’t build it with secrets and orders. We build it with trust.”

The council dispersed. The family walked out together, united.

The ship turned south, toward Argentina, toward the seals, toward whatever came next.

The storm was over. But the war was just beginning.
