I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 47: The Gift and the Growl

The afternoon sun slanted through the trees, painting the clearing in stripes of gold and shadow. The air hummed with the easy camaraderie of men at rest after hard work.

Orion sat on his tree-stump throne, utterly spent. He was breathing in deep, shaky huffs, sweat cooling on his brow and the back of his neck. Every muscle in his arms, shoulders, and core sang a chorus of dull, unfamiliar ache. It was a good ache. An honest one.

A ginger cookie appeared on the cloth beside him.

He looked up. Jax stood there, beaming. ”Eat, m’lord. You’re too skinny. Need fuel for the poking.”

Before Orion could thank him, a heavy earthenware mug was pressed into his hands. It was warm. He looked to see Corin, the red-haired youth, nodding earnestly. ”Tea. With honey. For your strength.”

Orion took a sip. It was sweet and strong, exactly what he needed. ”Thank you,” he said, his voice a bit rough.

He wasn’t used to this. To being fussed over, not as a noble consort to be managed, but as... one of them. A trainee. It was bewildering and warm, like stepping into a sunbeam after years in a shaded room.

He ate the cookie. It was crumbly and spicy. He was ravenous. The physical exertion had hollowed him out. When he finished, another cookie silently materialized on the cloth, placed there by Kaelen as he walked past, not even breaking stride.

Orion ate that one too.

Aster sat on a log nearby, sharpening a practice sword blade with a whetstone. The rhythmic *shink-shink* sound was soothing. He watched the clearing, a quiet overseer. His eyes lingered on Orion for a moment, noting the exhaustion, the flushed cheeks, the way he held the mug with both hands as if for support. A faint, approving nod.

The training yard had dissolved into its post-drill rituals. Over by the remains of the straw dummy, three happy, mud-splattered hounds were joyously tearing it to pieces. Someone—likely Loren—had suspiciously rubbed the straw with meat grease. The dogs thought it was the best toy ever invented. The blond straw hair was scattered everywhere, the charcoal smirk long since chewed away.

Nearby, two soldiers were arm-wrestling, their locked hands trembling over a barrel, faces red with strain while a small crowd cheered and placed quiet bets.

In a shady corner, a small group sat in a circle, speaking in hushed, fond tones, blushing and laughing softly.

”...my Liana, she writes every week, tells me about her garden...”

”...mine just had our second. Another Alpha, gods help us, the house will be rubble...”

”...miss her scent something fierce, like cinnamon and rain...”

Their conversation was a soft murmur of love and longing, a private world within the world of leather and steel.

Then Aster set the whetstone aside. He reached into a leather sheath at his own belt. He drew out a dagger.

Not a wooden practice tool. A real one.

The chatter in the clearing didn’t stop, but it quieted. Heads turned. Eyes followed the glint of metal.

It was beautiful in a simple, lethal way. The blade was about the length of Orion’s hand from wrist to fingertip, sleek and sharp, catching the dappled light. The hilt was wrapped in dark, worn leather, and the guard was a single, unadorned curve of polished steel. It was a soldier’s knife. Practical. Honest. Meant for utility, and if necessary, for killing.

Kaelen, who had been demonstrating a chokehold on a patiently suffering volunteer, paused. He raised a single, sharp eyebrow.

Aster stood and walked over to Orion.

Orion looked up, his mouth still slightly full of the last bite of cookie. He swallowed hastily, his cheeks still slightly puffed. The hunger was a deep, gnawing pit inside him, momentarily forgotten in his confusion.

Aster stopped in front of him. He reversed the dagger in his hand, holding it by the blade, and offered the hilt to Orion.

Orion blinked. He set the mug down carefully. He looked at the knife, then at Aster’s impassive face. ”For... the next lesson?” he asked, his voice tentative.

Aster’s lips twitched. Just a flicker at the corner. ”For you.”

Orion stared. ”For me?”

”A present,” Aster said, his tone matter-of-fact. ”And, in case you ever need to give a bothersome younger brother-in-law a slightly more persuasive poke than the wooden kind allows.”

For a heartbeat, there was silence.

Then the clearing erupted in laughter. It was loud, genuine, roaring laughter. It came from the belly. Men slapped their knees, wiped tears from their eyes.

One of the older soldiers, a grizzled man with a missing tooth, wheezed, ”Gods above! The Captain! The Captain makes a joke!”

Loren, who had been watching the dogs, spun around, his face a mask of theatrical betrayal. ”Hey! That was *my* line! I was saving that one! You stole my joke, you absolute thief!”

Aster didn’t even look at him. He just shrugged one shoulder, a tiny, dismissive gesture. The ghost of a smile finally broke through, softening the stern lines of his face for just a second.

The laughter swelled again, warmer now. It wasn’t at Orion. It was with him. It was approval. It was acceptance. The gift was a symbol, but the joke—the shared, irreverent jab at the common enemy—was the real welcome.

Orion felt a strange, tight feeling in his chest. It wasn’t fear. It was the opposite. It was belonging.

Hesitantly, he reached out. His fingers closed around the leather-wrapped hilt. It fit his grip perfectly, as if it had been waiting for him. It was heavier than the wood, solid and cold and real. The weight of it was a promise. A responsibility. A thread of power.

”Thank you, Captain,” Orion said, his voice firmer than he felt.

Aster gave a single nod. ”Keep it close. Don’t show it off in the manor. But know it’s there.”

Orion nodded, his thumb brushing over the cool steel of the guard. He carefully slid the blade into the empty sheath on his own belt. It settled against his hip, a secret weight.

Feeling suddenly buoyant, energized by the gift and the laughter, Orion stood up from the stump. His legs, fatigued and unsteady, protested. He took a step forward, meaning to walk over and thank the men for the tea and cookies.

His boot caught on the same hidden root that had tripped him hours before.

This time, there was no slow, undignified fall.

He pitched forward sharply, a gasp tearing from his throat, his arms flailing for balance that wasn’t there.

He didn’t hit the ground.

Aster moved like lightning. One moment he was standing a few feet away, the next he was there, his body intercepting Orion’s fall. One strong arm shot out, wrapping around Orion’s waist, catching him mid-collapse. The other hand splayed across his lower back, pulling him upright and flush against a solid wall of muscle and leather.

Orion stumbled into the hold, his face pressed for a fleeting second into Aster’s shoulder. He was completely caught, suspended, the captain’s hands firm on his hips, holding him steady until his feet found the earth again.

”Easy,” Aster murmured, his voice a low rumble right by Orion’s ear. He didn’t let go immediately, making sure Orion had his balance. ”The forest floor is treacherous. You have to watch for roots.”

Orion nodded, breathless, his heart hammering from the sudden scare. ”I... I see that now.”

Aster slowly released him, his hands lingering for a half-second before falling away.

And that was when they all heard it.

A low, visceral sound.

It wasn’t loud. It cut through the fading laughter and the general noise of the camp like a hot knife through butter.

It was a growl.

But not the playful rumble of a dog with a straw dummy. This was deeper. Primordial. It vibrated with a raw, possessive fury that froze the blood in Orion’s veins.

The sound came from the edge of the clearing.

Every man fell silent. The arm-wrestlers froze mid-strain. The gossips snapped their mouths shut. The dogs stopped chewing, ears pricked, whining softly.

They all turned.

Abel stood at the tree line.

He must have come searching, following Orion’s scent through the woods. He was still dressed in the soft indoor clothes Orion had helped him into that morning. But there was nothing soft about him now.

He stood perfectly still, his massive frame rigid. His golden-brown eyes, usually so warm and bright, were dark, fixed unblinkingly on the scene before him: on Aster, whose hands had just been on Orion’s hips. On Orion, standing so close to the captain, looking flushed and breathless.

Abel’s face was a blank, terrifying mask. But his scent, usually cedar and honey, had spiked into something else—something sharp, metallic, and fiercely protective. It rolled across the clearing like a thunderclap of warning.

An Alpha’s warning.

The air grew thick, charged with a tension sharper than any blade in the clearing.

No one moved. No one breathed.

Abel’s gaze swept from Aster to Orion, then back to Aster. The low growl still emanated from his chest, a continuous, threatening vibration.

He had seen it all.
