I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 26: The Awakening

The first thing Orion felt was the pain. It wasn’t a sharp, sudden thing anymore. It was a deep, grinding throb that seemed to pulse from the back of his skull through his entire body with every slow beat of his heart. It settled into his bones, a heavy, sickening ache.

Then came the sound. A low, steady crackle—a fire in a hearth. The soft rustle of fabric. And breathing. Not his own. Someone else’s breath, ragged and uneven, close by.

He tried to open his eyes. His eyelids were impossibly heavy, glued shut with exhaustion and dried tears. He managed a flutter. Light, muted and orange from firelight, stabbed at his blurred vision. It hurt. He let them close again.

He was in a bed. He could feel the weight of blankets, the smoothness of linen sheets. This wasn’t the floor. He was somewhere... safe? The thought was distant, fuzzy.

A voice cut through the fog. It was rough, gravelly with disuse and emotion, whispering right next to his ear.

”Orion?”

It was Abel.

Orion tried to answer. His throat was desert-dry, parched. All that came out was a faint, cracked sigh.

The hand holding his—he hadn’t even realized his hand was being held—tightened instantly. The grip was almost painful in its desperation.

”Orion?” Abel said again, louder this time, hope trembling in the word.

With a monumental effort, Orion forced his eyes open. The room swam into focus slowly, like a painting emerging from watercolors. He was in a large, familiar bedchamber—his and Abel’s room. The curtains were drawn, but firelight from the hearth danced on the walls. And beside the bed, hunched in a chair that looked too small for him, was Abel.

He looked terrible. His golden hair was a tangled mess, as if he’d been running his hands through it for hours. His eyes were swollen and red-rimmed, the skin beneath them bruised with exhaustion. He wore the same clothes from the day before, now wrinkled and stained. He was staring at Orion with a raw, vulnerable intensity, as if looking away for a second might make him disappear.

”You’re awake,” Abel breathed, his voice cracking. A fresh tear traced a path through the grime on his cheek.

Orion tried to nod. A spike of white-hot agony lanced through his skull. He winced, a small gasp escaping him.

Abel flinched as if struck. ”Hurts?” he asked, his voice small, childlike with worry.

Orion managed a tiny, careful movement of his head. A yes.

”Master Arlen said it would,” Abel whispered, leaning closer. His scent—warm cedar and honey, now underscored with the sour tang of fear and grief—enveloped Orion. It was oddly grounding. ”He fixed your head. Sewed it. You bled a lot. On the floor.”

The memories filtered back, piece by jagged piece. The staircase. Ashford’s sneering face. The shove. The fall. The *crack*. The blood spreading on pale marble. Abel’s shattered cry.

”Ashford...” Orion croaked, the name scraping his throat.

Abel’s expression darkened. A shadow of something fierce and protective flashed in his golden eyes. ”Guards took him. Father hit him.” He said it with a flat, factual tone, but there was a sliver of savage satisfaction buried deep within it.

Orion absorbed this. The Duke had intervened. Publicly. That was... significant.

He tried to shift, to sit up a little. A wave of dizziness and nausea washed over him, forcing him back down with a groan.

”Don’t move,” Abel said immediately, his hand moving from Orion’s to hover awkwardly over his shoulder, wanting to help but afraid to touch. ”Master Arlen said you have to be still. Your brain got... shook. Like a snow globe.” He frowned, trying to remember the physician’s exact words. ”Concussion. Bad one.”

”How long?” Orion whispered.

Abel blinked, confused for a moment. Then he understood. ”A day and a night. It’s morning now. Second morning.” He looked toward the window, though the curtains were closed. ”The sun is up. I think.”

A day and a night. Lost in the void.

”You stayed?” Orion asked, though he already knew the answer.

Abel’s gaze snapped back to him, wide and earnest. ”Of course. Where else would I go?” As if the idea of leaving this chair was unthinkable. ”I watched you breathe. All night. Sometimes it got really quiet and I got scared, so I held your hand tighter. Then you’d breathe again.” He said it simply, a report on his vigil.

A lump formed in Orion’s throat, painful around the dryness. This man, who the world called broken, had kept watch over him with a loyalty more profound than any oath. He hadn’t left. He hadn’t gotten bored or distracted. He had just... stayed.

”Thank you,” Orion whispered, the words inadequate.

Abel just shook his head, fresh tears welling. ”No. No thank you. It’s my fault.”

”No, Abel,” Orion said, mustering as much strength as he could. ”It was Ashford. You didn’t do anything.”

”But I was there,” Abel insisted, his voice thick with guilt. ”I was right there and I couldn’t catch you. My hands were too slow. I just watched you fall.” He looked down at his own large hands now, clenched into frustrated fists in his lap. ”Useless.”

”You’re not useless,” Orion said fiercely, the conviction cutting through his own pain. ”You’re here. That’s what matters.”

Before Abel could argue further, the door to the chamber opened softly. Master Arlen entered, followed by a maid carrying a tray with a steaming bowl and a pitcher of water. The physician was a middle-aged man with a calm, weary face and intelligent eyes. He took in the scene—Orion awake, Abel distraught—and gave a small, professional nod.

”Consort Valerian. You’re back with us. How do you feel?”

”Like my head was used as an anvil,” Orion rasped.

A faint smile touched Arlen’s lips. ”Apt. That’s the concussion. The laceration on your scalp required fifteen stitches. You also have significant bruising along your spine and ribs from the fall. You are extremely fortunate there is no spinal damage.” He moved to the bedside, gently feeling Orion’s pulse at his wrist. ”Do you feel nauseous? Any blurring of vision?”

”Both,” Orion admitted.

”Expected. You must remain on complete bed rest. No sitting up, no reading, no excitement. Quiet and dark. We need to let the swelling in your brain subside.” He glanced at Abel. ”My Lord, he needs rest. And so do you. You haven’t slept.”

Abel shook his head stubbornly, not taking his eyes off Orion. ”I’m fine.”

”You are not,” Arlen said, more firmly. ”You will be of no help to him if you collapse. Go. Wash. Change your clothes. Eat something in the adjoining room. You can return in an hour.”

Abel looked torn, panic rising in his eyes at the thought of leaving.

”It’s okay,” Orion said softly, giving Abel’s hand what he hoped was a reassuring squeeze. ”I’ll be right here. I promise I won’t go anywhere. Just... do what he says. For me?”

The ”for me” did it. Abel’s resistance crumbled. He nodded reluctantly, releasing Orion’s hand as if it pained him. He stood, his large frame unfolding stiffly from the small chair. He lingered for a moment, looking down at Orion with heartbreaking uncertainty.

”One hour,” Orion whispered.

”One hour,” Abel repeated, like a vow. He turned and shuffled out of the room, casting a last, longing look over his shoulder before the door closed behind him.

Once he was gone, the room felt emptier, colder. Master Arlen let out a quiet sigh. ”He hasn’t left that chair since we brought you in. Refused all food. Drank only when forced. His devotion is... formidable.”

Orion didn’t know what to say to that.

Arlen helped the maid prop Orion up just enough to sip some water. It was cool and blissful on his throat. Then came a thin, bland broth. He managed a few spoonfuls before the nausea threatened to rebel.

As the maid cleared the tray, Arlen’s expression grew more serious. ”Consort, while your physical injuries are concerning, there is another matter. The circumstances of your fall.”

Orion remained silent, watching him.

”The accounts from the servants are unanimous. Lord Ashford provoked you, then struck you, causing the fall.” Arlen paused. ”Some also suggest your words to him were deliberately... inflammatory.”

Orion met his gaze. ”I defended my husband.”

”I do not doubt it. And I am not judging. I am your physician, not a magistrate. But you must understand the position this puts the Duke in. A public assault by one son upon the spouse of another. The heir’s spouse, no less.” He lowered his voice. ”Lord Ashford is currently confined to his apartments under guard. The Duke has not yet announced any formal judgment.”

”What will happen?” Orion asked, though he suspected he knew.

”That is for the Duke to decide. But such an act cannot go unpunished. Not if he wishes to maintain order in the household, or his standing with your own family.” Arlen adjusted Orion’s pillow. ”Your focus now must be on healing. The politics will wait. But they *will* be waiting for you when you are back on your feet.”

He finished his examination, checked the bandage on Orion’s head, and gave more instructions about rest. Then he left, leaving Orion alone with the crackling fire and the throbbing in his skull.

Orion lay still, staring at the canopy above the bed. He thought of Ashford, locked away. He thought of the Duke’s stony face, the slap that had echoed in the hall. He thought of Abel’s devastated eyes.

He had wanted to protect Abel’s smile. He had gambled and won, in a brutal, costly way. Ashford was publicly disgraced, his cruelty laid bare. But the cost was here, in this bed, in the pain grinding through him.

Was it worth it?

The image of Abel smiling in the meadow, blushing from a simple kiss, flashed behind his closed eyelids. Yes. A thousand times yes.

Orion felt that warm, protective root in his chest twist and grow deeper, anchoring itself not just in affection, but in a cold, clear purpose.

This wasn’t just about protecting a smile anymore.

The door opened softly. Abel slipped back in, true to his one-hour promise. He had washed. His hair was damp, combed back neatly. He wore clean, simple clothes. He still looked exhausted, but some of the frantic terror had eased from his face.

He came straight to the chair, sitting down and immediately reclaiming Orion’s hand. His touch was gentler now, more careful.

”You’re still here,” Abel said, as if confirming a miracle.

”I told you I would be,” Orion murmured.

Abel leaned his head against the edge of the mattress, close to their joined hands. He closed his eyes, a long, shuddering breath leaving his body. For the first time in over a day, some of the terrible tension seemed to leave his massive frame.

”Don’t do that again,” Abel whispered, his voice muffled against the blanket. ”The falling. I didn’t like it.”

”I didn’t like it either,” Orion said dryly.

A tiny, huffing sound escaped Abel—almost a laugh, born from relief. He lifted his head, his golden eyes soft. ”Next time,” he said, with sudden, startling seriousness, ”I will catch you.”

Orion believed him.

”Okay,” Orion whispered, closing his eyes again, letting the warmth of Abel’s hand seep into his cold fingers. ”Next time, you can catch me.”
