I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 8: The Lesson in the Quiet

They stayed like that for a long time. Orion sitting on the edge of the bed, his body feeling wrung out and hollow. Abel kneeling on the floor, his head now resting sideways on the mattress near Orion’s knee, his eyes closed. The only sound was their breathing, slowly syncing—Orion’s shaky sighs, Abel’s deeper, calming rhythm.

The sunlight through the window had moved. It no longer cut across the floor in a bright blade. It softened, spreading into a warm, golden pool.

Abel was the first to speak. His voice was muffled by the bedding. ”Does it always hurt?” he asked.

Orion looked down at the top of Abel’s head. ”Does what hurt?”

”The... outside.”

Orion considered this. He thought of his father’s study. Of Elian’s sneer. Of Ashford’s laughing face. ”Sometimes,” he said honestly. ”Not always. But sometimes it hurts more than other times.”

Abel was quiet again. Then, ”Today hurt a lot.”

”Yes.”

Abel lifted his head. His cheek had a red mark from the fabric. His eyes were clear now, but serious. ”I don’t want it to hurt you,” he said, with a simple, profound conviction. ”I don’t like when you run.”

Orion felt a fresh pang in his chest. Not of humiliation, but of something softer, more complicated. ”I didn’t mean to scare you.”

”You didn’t scare me,” Abel said quickly. Then he corrected himself, frowning. ”Well. You did. But not like a monster scares me. It was... different. It was a bad scare. Like when you see a baby bird fall from a nest. You’re scared for it.”

The analogy was so pure, so perfectly Abel, that Orion felt a ghost of a smile touch his lips. It felt strange on his sore face.

”I am not a baby bird, Abel.”

”I know,” Abel said earnestly. ”But you ran like one. All fast and... and broken.” He reached out, very slowly, and patted Orion’s hand where it lay on the bed. Just two quick taps. ”No more running, okay? If it hurts, we come back here. We can hide.”

Orion looked at the large hand covering his own. ”We can’t hide forever.”

”Why not?”

”Because... the world is out there. We have to live in it.”

Abel’s nose wrinkled. ”I don’t like that rule.”

This time, Orion did smile. A real, small, weary smile. ”Neither do I.”

They lapsed into silence again. The quiet was comfortable now. Not heavy. It was the quiet of a storm that has passed, leaving everything washed clean and tired.

After a while, Abel shifted. He got up from his knees with a soft groan, rubbing his legs. He didn’t go far. He just sat on the floor, his back against the side of the bed, right next to Orion’s legs. He leaned his head back until it rested against Orion’s thigh.

Orion went very still. The contact was casual. Intimate. Abel didn’t seem to think anything of it. He was just seeking closeness.

”Can I ask a question?” Abel said, staring up at the canopy.

”Yes.”

”What does ’satisfy’ mean?”

Orion froze. The word, which had caused so much pain just an hour before, hung in the quiet room. He looked down at Abel’s profile. There was no lewdness in the question. No smirk. Just genuine curiosity. Abel had heard the word used as a weapon. He wanted to understand the ammunition.

How do you explain physical intimacy to someone who lived in a world of wooden horses and cookie-sharing rules?

Orion chose his words carefully. ”It means... to take care of someone. To make sure they have what they need. To make them feel... good. Safe. Not hurting.”

Abel nodded slowly against his leg. ”Like giving the grumpy soldier a horse.”

Orion blinked. ”A little like that, yes.”

”So Ashford said I can’t give you a horse.”

”In a way.”

Abel was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, ”That’s stupid. I can give you lots of horses. I have a whole box.” He tilted his head back further to look up at Orion. His expression was defiant. ”I can take care of you. I didn’t bite you, did I? Because it would hurt. That’s taking care.”

Orion’s throat tightened. ”Yes, Abel. That was taking care.”

”And I waited for you in the hall so you wouldn’t get lost. That’s taking care.”

”It is.”

”And I chased you when you ran. That’s taking care too.” Abel’s brow furrowed, as if he was adding up a list in his head. ”So I do satisfy. I just do it my way.”

The simplicity of it was disarming. Abel had stripped the word of its sexual weight, its societal baggage, and boiled it down to its essence: care. And by his own metric, he was succeeding.

Orion couldn’t argue with it. Not without dragging them both back into the painful complexity of the world outside.

”You do,” Orion said softly. ”You satisfy just fine, Abel.”

Abel beamed. It was a radiant, relieved smile. He turned his head and buried his face against Orion’s thigh for a second, a gesture that was almost nuzzling. ”Good,” he mumbled, his voice satisfied.

They stayed like that until the light began to fade from gold to orange. Servants came to the door once, a soft knock offering a tray of food. Orion called out, ”Not now, thank you,” and they left.

Eventually, Orion’s legs began to ache from sitting so still. He shifted.

Abel immediately lifted his head. ”Are you okay?”

”Just stiff.”

Abel scrambled to his feet. He held out his hand, just like he had in the hallway. ”Come on.”

Orion took his hand. Abel pulled him up gently. They stood facing each other in the dimming room. Abel didn’t let go of his hand.

”Do you want to play?” Abel asked, his eyes hopeful. ”We don’t have to. We can just sit.”

Orion looked at their joined hands. He thought of the long, empty evening ahead. The silent dinner they would miss. The whispers that would be spreading through the house.

He looked at Abel’s open, waiting face.

”Okay,” Orion said. ”We can play.”

Abel’s smile could have lit the room. He led Orion over to the hearth rug where the toy box still sat. He sat down cross-legged and pulled the box over. He began to unpack it with reverence: the wooden soldiers, the horses, the little blocks that could be a castle or a mountain.

Orion sat down beside him, folding his legs beneath him. He watched Abel arrange the pieces with intense concentration.

”Here,” Abel said, handing Orion a soldier with a painted blue coat. ”You can be the captain. The nice one.”

Orion took the smooth piece of wood. It felt solid in his hand.

Abel picked up a soldier in red. ”I’ll be this one. He’s the captain’s friend. He brings him cookies when he’s sad.”

Orion looked at the little painted face on his soldier. Then he looked at Abel, who was watching him eagerly, waiting for the story to begin.

Outside, the Valerian estate went about its business. Judgments were made. Gossip swirled. Plans were adjusted.

But inside, by the cooling hearth, two husbands sat on a rug. One was learning how to navigate a world that laughed at him. The other was learning that care could come in many forms, even in the shape of a wooden soldier and the promise of a cookie.

Orion placed his captain carefully on a block. ”Alright,” he said, his voice still rough from tears, but steady. ”Once upon a time, there was a captain who had a very bad day...”

And as he began to speak, weaving a simple tale of a lost horse found and a shared meal by a campfire, Abel listened with rapt attention, his whole world focused on the sound of his husband’s voice and the small wooden figure held gently in his hand.
