I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 45: The Offer in the Clearing

Two days later.

The forest was a different world. Sunlight fell in sharp, dusty shafts through the canopy, painting the ground in shifting patterns of light and shadow. The air smelled of damp earth, pine resin, and the sharp, clean scent of sweat.

In a wide, hidden clearing, the Ironwood Guard was training.

The sound reached Orion long before he saw them—the rhythmic thud of boots on packed earth, the grunt of effort, the *clack* of wooden practice swords meeting, and Aster’s calm, carrying voice cutting through the chaos.

”Loren, your guard is open. A child could poke you there.”

”I’m being *deceptive*, Captain!”

”You’re being dead. Close it.”

Orion moved quietly, keeping to the edge of the trees. He hadn’t told Abel where he was going. His husband was happily occupied in the library with Master Ferris, attempting to copy letters with a seriousness usually reserved for treaty negotiations. It had been the perfect opportunity to slip away.

He found a spot behind a thick oak and peered into the clearing.

Aster stood at the center, a still point in the storm. He wasn’t shouting. He didn’t need to. His observations were delivered like facts, dry and undeniable. He watched two men spar, his arms crossed over his broad chest.

Jax, the giant, was paired with Corin, the red-haired youth. It was not a fair fight. Jax moved with a surprising, lumbering grace, his practice sword looking like a toy in his massive hands. Corin danced around him, quick and nervous, his strikes bouncing harmlessly off Jax’s raised guard.

”Corin,” Aster said, not raising his voice. ”You’re hitting his sword. His sword is not the enemy. His body is. Find the body.”

Corin flushed, ducked under a slow swing, and tried to dart in. Jax simply dropped his shoulder and bumped him. Corin went flying, landing on his backside with a soft *oof*, his practice sword skittering away.

Jax immediately looked horrified. He dropped his own sword and rushed over. ”Kid! Sorry! You alright? I didn’t mean to—”

”Jax,” Aster sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. ”In a real fight, do you stop to apologize?”

”Well, no, but—”

”Then don’t do it here. He needs to learn how to fall. And you,” he turned to Corin, who was scrambling to his feet, ”need to learn that speed means nothing if you run directly into a wall. Which Jax is. A very nice, apologetic wall.”

On the other side of the clearing, Kaelen was running through knife drills alone, his movements fluid and precise, a silent ballet of lethal intent. Loren was trying to balance on a log while deflecting attacks from another guard with a padded staff. He was laughing, taunting his opponent, and consequently, he was losing badly.

It was chaos. But it was a familiar, practiced chaos. These men knew each other. They moved around each other with the ease of long partnership, their insults affectionate, their corrections blunt.

Orion watched, fascinated. This was the world Abel had belonged to. A world of physical certainty, of action and consequence, of trust earned in sweat and shared danger. It was so far removed from the stifling politics of the manor it felt like another country.

Then it happened.

One of the younger soldiers—a man Orion didn’t know—was practicing a complicated disarm maneuver on a training dummy. He spun, misjudged his footing on the uneven ground, and instead of sweeping the dummy’s leg, he kicked the solid post holding it up.

A sharp crack echoed.

The soldier yelped, hopping on one foot, clutching his toes.

Kaelen didn’t even look up from his knives.

Loren paused on his log, grinned, and called out, ”Brilliant strategy! Break your foot on the enemy’s strongest point! They’ll never expect it!”

Aster closed his eyes for a long moment. When he opened them, he looked like a man whose patience was a thin, fraying thread. ”Kaelen.”

The Omega didn’t pause his drill. ”Hmm?”

”Please educate our friend on the difference between a leg and an oak post.”

Without a word, Kaelen finished his sequence, sheathed his practice knives, and walked over. He moved with a quiet, deadly efficiency. The injured soldier looked up, wary.

”It was a mistake,” the man mumbled.

”Mistakes get you killed,” Kaelen said, his voice flat. Then, with shocking speed, he hooked his foot behind the man’s standing leg and swept it out from under him. The soldier landed hard on his back, the air rushing from his lungs. Before he could react, Kaelen planted a boot—not hard, but firmly—on his chest, pinning him.

”Your enemy is here,” Kaelen said, tapping the man’s sternum with his toe. ”Not the tree. Focus.”

Aster gave a single, slow nod. ”Thank you, Kaelen. Everyone, take five. Drink water. Try not to invent new ways to injure yourselves.”

The clearing relaxed into a murmur of conversation and the sound of water being gulped from skins. Aster rubbed his temples, a faint smile finally touching his lips as he watched his men.

This was when Orion decided to move.

He stepped out from behind the oak, meaning to walk calmly into the clearing. He took two steps.

His boot caught on a hidden root, twisted in a patch of moss.

There was no grace to it. No dramatic stumble. One moment he was upright, the next the world tilted. He threw his hands out, but there was nothing to grab. He hit the soft, leafy forest floor with a heavy, undignified *woomph*.

The air left his lungs in a surprised gasp.

Silence.

Absolute, utter silence fell over the clearing.

The chatter died. The drinking stopped.

Every head turned as one, like a flock of birds spotting a predator.

Twenty pairs of eyes—hard, trained, curious—locked onto the figure in fine grey wool now sitting sprawled on the ground, leaves in his dark hair.

Orion, consort of the heir. Lord Valerian’s mate. The delicate Omega from the main house.

He sat there, stunned, his cheeks heating with a flush that had nothing to do with exertion. He could feel the weight of their collective gaze. It wasn’t hostile. It was... perplexed. As if a rare, fragile vase had just rolled itself into a barracks.

For a long second, nobody moved.

Then Aster moved.

The captain crossed the clearing in a few long strides. He didn’t run. He didn’t look alarmed. He simply arrived. He looked down at Orion, his expression unreadable. Then, without a word, he bent, slid one arm under Orion’s knees and the other behind his back, and lifted him as easily as if he were a sack of grain.

Orion made a small, choked sound of protest, but it was too late. He was being carried.

Aster didn’t take him far. He carried him to a large, flat-topped tree stump at the edge of the training ground—a stump that had clearly been used as a makeshift bench or table for years. It was worn smooth. As if by magic, a clean cloth appeared from somewhere on Aster’s person and was draped over the stump. Then Orion was set down upon it, gently, as if he were made of glass.

Before Orion could speak, Aster reached into a leather pouch at his belt and pulled out a small, wrapped bundle. He unwrapped it to reveal a stack of pale, crumbly ginger cookies. He placed them on the cloth beside Orion.

Then he took a step back, crossed his arms again, and regarded his unexpected guest.

”You’re not hurt,” Aster stated. It wasn’t a question.

Orion brushed leaves from his sleeves, trying to salvage some dignity. ”No. Just my pride.”

A faint glimmer of amusement touched Aster’s eyes. ”Pride is a luxury. It doesn’t bleed.” He glanced over his shoulder at his men, who were all pretending very hard not to stare. ”Back to work! Give the man some space to resurrect his dignity.”

The men snapped back into motion, though the glances kept coming. Whispered comments were exchanged. Jax looked deeply concerned, as if he wanted to come over and check for broken bones himself. Corin was peeking from behind a training dummy, eyes wide. Loren was grinning openly.

Kaelen had resumed his knife drills, but his gaze flicked to Orion and then to Aster, analytical and sharp.

Aster turned his full attention back to Orion. He leaned against a nearby tree, his posture deceptively relaxed. ”So. My lord. To what do we owe the...” he gestured vaguely at the forest floor, ”...dramatic entrance?”

Orion took a deep breath. He straightened his back, ignoring the fact he was perched on a tree stump like a misplaced garden ornament. He looked directly at Aster, meeting those steady, assessing brown eyes.

”You said something to me. Last time i visited remember?.”

Aster waited, saying nothing.

”You said,” Orion continued, his voice growing firmer, ”that if I ever wanted to learn self defence, you would teach me.”

He remembered the words perfectly. The offer had been tossed out almost casually, but it had stuck in his mind, a lifeline thrown into the turbulent waters of his new reality.

Aster’s eyebrows lifted slightly. He hadn’t forgotten.

Orion gestured around the clearing, at the men sweating and straining, at the world of strength and competence that felt so alien to him. ”This is where you would teach me. Isn’t it?”

Aster nodded slowly. ”It is.”

Orion swallowed.

He looked down at his hands, clean and soft, then at the hands of the men around him—scarred, calloused, capable.

He thought of Ashford’s shove. The helpless feeling of falling. The cold marble against his skull.

He thought of the bitter taste of the suppressant on his tongue and the secret he now carried.

He needed to be more than what he was.

Orion looked up, and a small, determined smile touched his lips. It felt strange on his face. Hopeful.

”I wanted to know,” he said, his voice clear in the quiet clearing, ”if that offer is still available.”

The words hung in the air.

The rhythmic thuds of practice slowed. The men were listening now, unable to pretend otherwise.

Aster studied him. He didn’t see a spoiled noble or a fragile Omega. He saw the man who had stood his ground against Ashford on the staircase. The man who had looked at a broken wooden horse and seen a thing worth mending. The man who had asked about a carriage wheel with a quiet, persistent intensity.

He saw Abel’s choice.

And in that moment, Aster’s solemn face softened, just at the edges. It wasn’t quite a smile. It was an acknowledgment. A door opening.

”The offer,” Aster said, pushing himself off the tree, ”stands.”

He walked over to a rack of practice weapons. He bypassed the swords, the staffs, the knives. He selected a short, blunt wooden dagger—a trainer’s tool, simple and unthreatening.

He walked back and held it out, hilt-first, to Orion.

”But we start at the beginning,” Aster said, his tone leaving no room for argument. ”Today, you learn one thing. How to hold this. How to stand so you don’t fall over when you hold it. And how to get away if someone grabs you.”

Orion stared at the offered weapon. It was just a piece of shaped wood. But it felt immense. It was a key. A promise. A first, concrete step away from helplessness.

He reached out. His fingers closed around the hilt. It was rough, solid, real.

It felt good.

”Okay,” Orion said, his voice barely a whisper. Then, stronger, ”Okay. Teach me.”

Aster gave a single, firm nod. He turned to the clearing. ”Jax! You’re on cookie duty. If anyone so much as looks at these ginger biscuits, you sit on them.”

Jax’s face lit up. ”Yes, Captain!” He marched over and stationed himself by the tree stump, a mountainous, cheerful guardian of the baked goods.

”The rest of you,” Aster commanded, his voice taking on the easy authority of the training yard, ”ignore us. This is a private lesson. Whatever you see, whatever you hear, it stays in this clearing. Is that understood?”

A low rumble of assent went through the men. Their curiosity didn’t vanish, but it was banked, replaced by a respectful focus. They returned to their drills, the noise level rising again, giving the illusion of privacy.

Aster turned back to Orion. He pointed to the open space in front of the stump.

”Stand up. Bring the knife. Feet apart. No, wider. Like you’re rooted to the ground. You’re not a sapling in the wind. You’re a tree. A small, determined tree.”

Orion slid off the stump, the wooden dagger clutched tightly in his hand. He planted his feet in the dirt, feeling the earth firm beneath his boots.

The sun was warm on his back. The smell of sweat and pine filled his lungs. The sounds of the training yard surrounded him.

And for the first time in a long time, he felt a spark of something that had been buried under duty and despair: possibility.

The lesson began.
