I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 10: The Name in the Wind

Angel moved with a power that was deceptive. His walk was not a jarring, plodding step, but a smooth, rolling gait that ate up the ground. Orion felt the immense strength coiled beneath him, a living engine of muscle and sinew, yet it was utterly controlled. The horse responded to the slightest shift of his weight, the gentlest touch of the reins, as if they were sharing a single thought.

Out of the courtyard, past the formal gardens, Abel guided them with soft presses of his legs—left, right—toward a wide, sandy track that wound through a sun-dappled copse of ancient oaks. They left the stone and scrutiny of the main house behind, swallowed by green light and birdsong.

Abel was humming.

It was a low, tuneless sound, a vibration Orion felt through his back where Abel’s chest pressed against him. It was a sound of pure, uncomplicated contentment. He wasn’t just sitting behind Orion; he was *with* him, his body relaxed and moving in time with the horse’s rhythm, his arms a secure band around Orion’s waist.

Angel’s ears, which had been flicking forward and back with alert intelligence, swiveled toward the sound. One ear tilted back toward Abel, listening. Then, as if pleased, the great horse gave a soft, chuffing snort and shook his magnificent head, making his bridle jingle.

His walk gained a subtle, playful bounce—a jaunty little extra step here and there.

He was teasing them. A warhorse, playing.

Orion couldn’t help the small, genuine laugh that escaped him. It was a quiet sound, lost in the rustle of leaves, but Abel heard it. The humming stopped.

”You laughed,” Abel said, his voice warm with wonder near Orion’s ear.

”He’s showing off for you,” Orion said, patting Angel’s sleek neck. ”He knows you’re happy.”

”I am happy,” Abel confirmed, and the simple statement held more weight than any elaborate poetry.

He rested his chin on Orion’s shoulder for a moment, watching the path ahead. ”We took him back. We just... took him.”

”We did.”

”Ashford’s face looked like a squished tomato.”

This time, Orion’s laugh was fuller, freer. It felt good. It felt like shedding a heavy coat he hadn’t realized he was wearing. ”It did, rather.”

They rode in comfortable silence for a while longer, the only sounds the crunch of sand under hoof, the sigh of the wind in the oaks, and Abel’s steady breathing. The tension of the day—the humiliation, the tears, the confrontation—began to leach away, replaced by the simple peace of motion and shared presence.

Then Abel’s grip tightened just a fraction around Orion’s waist. Not nervously, but thoughtfully.

”Orion?”

”Hmm?”

”Earlier... in the stable. You called me something.”

Orion replayed the moment. The sweet, dangerous smile aimed at Ashford. His own voice saying, *’Isn’t that right, my love?’*

A faint heat crept up the back of Orion’s neck. It had been a weapon, a piece of theater aimed at Ashford.

But the word had passed his lips. Abel had heard it.

”I did,” Orion admitted.

”What’s ’love’?” Abel asked. His tone held no embarrassment, only the straightforward curiosity of a scholar encountering a new word. ”Is it like ’husband’?”

Orion considered how to map the uncharted territory of romantic affection for someone whose emotional vocabulary was so beautifully literal. ”It’s... related. ’Husband’ is what you are. A title. ’Love’ is... more of a feeling. Or a name you give someone because of the feeling.”

”What feeling?”

Orion stared at the dappled light shifting on the path ahead. ”The feeling when you want to be near someone. When you think about them even when they’re not there. When their happiness makes you happy. When you want to take care of them, and... and you feel safe when they take care of you.” He paused, feeling absurdly exposed. ”It’s what married people often call each other. If they have that feeling.”

Abel was silent for a long time. So long that Orion wondered if he’d confused him or overwhelmed him.

He could almost hear the gears turning in Abel’s mind, sorting this new information, comparing it to his own internal experience.

”Oh,” Abel said finally, softly. The word was an exhalation against Orion’s neck.

Then, after another stretch of quiet, broken only by Angel’s rhythmic steps: ”What am I supposed to call you?”

Orion’s heart gave a funny little stutter. ”You don’t have to call me anything special. My name is fine. Orion is good.”

”But you called me ’my love’,” Abel pointed out, his logic impeccable. ”That’s special. Shouldn’t I call you something special back? To be fair?”

Orion smiled, despite the fluttering in his stomach. ”It’s not about fairness, Abel. You can if you want to. But only if you mean it. You could just say ’Orion.’ Or ’husband.’ Some people say ’darling’ or ’dearest.’ It doesn’t matter.”

”Dar-ling,” Abel repeated slowly, testing the shape of the word. He shook his head against Orion’s shoulder. ”No. That’s for cookies. Dearest... that sounds like a fancy chair.”

Orion choked on another laugh. ”Alright. Not those then.”

Abel fell quiet again, deep in thought. His hold around Orion’s waist shifted. It wasn’t loosening, but changing. One hand slid a little lower, splaying possessively over Orion’s abdomen, holding him securely against the solid wall of Abel’s chest. The other hand came up, his fingers brushing lightly against the side of Orion’s ribcage.

He leaned in closer. His nose brushed the shell of Orion’s ear. His breath was warm.

When he spoke, his voice was different.

It wasn’t the bright, open tone of the man who played with wooden horses. It wasn’t the confused, panicked voice from the hallway. It was lower. Richer. It resonated from deep in his chest, carrying a subtle, undeniable Alpha timbre—a vibration that seemed to bypass Orion’s ears and go straight to his spine. It was the voice of the man who had once commanded this very warhorse, and perhaps armies. A voice that had been sleeping, now stirring.

He didn’t shout. He didn’t growl. He simply let the word settle into the space between them, intimate and clear, as if naming a fundamental truth he had just discovered.

”Mine.”

The single syllable hung in the oak-scented air.

It wasn’t a question. It wasn’t a request. It was a declaration, quiet and absolute.

Angel’s ears flicked back, catching the shift in his master’s voice. The horse’s gait didn’t falter, but his head lifted a degree higher, his stride gaining a touch of proud awareness, as if acknowledging the claim.

Orion stopped breathing.

The word landed in the center of his being and reverberated. It should have felt oppressive. Crude. A reduction of his person to a possession.

It felt nothing like that.

Wrapped in Abel’s secure embrace, feeling the rumble of that word through Abel’s chest and into his own back, hearing it spoken not with arrogance but with a sort of awed, solemn conviction... it felt like being *seen*. Not as a replacement, not as a duty, not as a political tool. But as a person who belonged *with* another person. Who was claimed, not taken. Chosen, not assigned.

It was the opposite of the cold neglect of his father’s house. The opposite of Ashford’s mocking dismissal. This was a warmth that seared away the chill of a lifetime.

Tears pricked at Orion’s eyes again, but they were of a completely different nature. He blinked them back rapidly, grateful Abel couldn’t see his face.

He found his voice, though it was thinner than he intended. ”Is that what you’ve decided to call me?”

Abel nuzzled his hair gently, the Alpha gravel fading back into his usual tender tone, though the possessiveness in his hold remained. ”Yes,” he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. ”Because you are. You’re my husband. You ride my horse with me. You make the bad things quieter. You’re mine.” He said it again, savoring it. ”My Orion.”

He said it not as two words, but as one. *Myorion.* A new title. A new name.

Orion let out the breath he’d been holding. He brought his own hand up and laid it over Abel’s where it rested on his stomach, lacing their fingers together. The gesture was an answer. An acceptance.

”Alright,” Orion whispered to the wind and the trees and the patiently listening horse. ”Alright.”

And as they rode on, the path beginning to slope upward toward a hill that promised a view of the whole valley, Orion leaned back, just a little, into the solid, welcoming warmth at his back. He closed his eyes, feeling the sun on his face, the powerful movement of the animal beneath him, and the steady, unwavering heartbeat of the man who held him, who had just rewritten his identity with a single, perfect word.

He was no longer just Orion Valen, the spare son.

He was no longer just Orion, the replacement bride.

He was *Myorion*.

And for the first time since a carriage had rolled up to his father’s door, it felt like enough. It felt like more than enough. It felt like everything.
