Chen Jie said, ”No, Lord, I have never plotted anything, including that guard matter. I have always been very passive.”

”Really? Wasn’t the coffin incident outside the city a trap you set for Nan Batian?”

Chen Jie said, ”Lord, I admit, I did indeed set a trap for him that time, but it was only after he and his men stopped my funeral procession and wanted to open the coffin that I came up with the idea on the spot. You know, my brothers were all killed by Nan Batian. They would certainly want to see their enemy kneel down and kowtow.”

Lord Yelu narrowed his eyes and said, ”What about the matter with the Tara family?”

”Lord Yelu, the Tara family has nothing to do with me, including their deaths. They weren’t killed by our White Tiger Hall’s people. I swear to heaven, I have no intention of being enemies with the Mulan people.”

Chen Jie said very earnestly.

Lord Yelu frowned and said, ”And what about Nan Batian’s smuggling operation?”

Chen Jie said, ”That was something I leaked to Liu Laoguai. As you know, Lord, Nan Batian, following your orders, sealed the entire Mianshui River. My wharfs and dozens of cargo ships were unable to leave the banks, while Nan Batian was making big money by opening the river in secret. Frankly, I was jealous. But if I were to come to you, Lord Yelu, to complain, it would seem as if I were reporting superiors to you, something a gentleman would not do. I was also afraid of being pointed at by the disciples of the Fishing Guild, so I could only use Liu Laoguai’s hand, with the aim of causing Nan Batian discomfort.”

Upon hearing this, Lord Yelu laughed heartily, ”Hahaha... you are quite forthright to admit such a thing.”

Chen Jie said, ”I have nothing to hide from you, Lord.”

”So you mean to say you have no collusion with the Zoroastrian Sect, and you are innocent?”

Lord Yelu stared at Chen Jie, who met his gaze without any flinching, very calmly stating, ”Yes, I have no connections with the Zoroastrian Sect. Please, Lord, discern the truth!”

Lord Yelu looked into Chen Jie’s eyes, people who lie usually have shifty eyes, but Chen Jie’s eyes were calm, indifferent, with no sign of evasion, showing pure sincerity.

For this gaze, Chen Jie had practiced hard for a long time, overcoming the cowardice in his heart, to come here and have an ’open-hearted talk’ with Lord Yelu.

Lord Yelu was moved by Chen Jie’s sincerity, calmed his heart, put down his fishing rod, and said, ”Enough, state the purpose of your visit today.”

Chen Jie said very seriously, ”To kill Nan Batian!”

Lord Yelu, taken aback, looked at him and said, ”You are really frank, to speak so openly about such a difficult subject.”

Chen Jie looked at Lord Yelu and said, ”Lord, I have no lies for you. I really want to kill Nan Batian.”

Lord Yelu said, ”I know about your grudge, but as you know, I won’t take sides because of your personal disputes or help you deal with Nan Batian.”

Chen Jie said, ”Lord, there’s no need for you to take sides, you just need to make a fair judgment.”

”A fair judgment?”

Lord Yelu sized up Chen Jie and said, ”Have you found some convincing evidence against Nan Batian?”

Chen Jie looked at Lord Yelu and said, ”Lord, it is certain that Nan Batian is colluding with the Zoroastrian Sect, and he might even be a major leader, possibly the one in charge of transporting arms from Mianshui County to the Northern regions.”

”Do you have evidence?”

Chen Jie bowed and said, ”Yes, my people have been watching. Nan Batian has been refining arms in a mine cave in the North Mountain Iron Ore District. As long as you send people there, Lord, you will catch both the man and his contraband!”

”Hmm?”

Lord Yelu’s eyes went wide in shock as he looked at Chen Jie, ”Really? He’s that bold?”

Chen Jie said, ”It’s true, without a doubt, Lord. Here is the location of that mine. If you send Commander Qimu Ge to check, there will surely be gains.”

Lord Yelu, upon hearing this, glanced at Qimu Ge, who said, ”My Lord, I can go now.”

Lord Yelu raised his hand and said, ”Wait!”

Lord Yelu looked at Chen Jie and said, ”Jiu Si, do you think it’s possible that Nan Batian is doing this to deceive me, secretly making arms?”

Chen Jie said, ”It’s possible! And of course, it’s also possible that he truly is a spy for the Zoroastrian Sect, specifically working to gather arms for them!”

Lord Yelu was momentarily startled, then looked at Chen Jie, who bowed and said, ”Lord, my main purpose of coming here was to deliver two pieces of news, this being the first!”

Lord Yelu said, ”And the second?”

Chen Jie said, ”There’s an inn on Le’an Street in South City called Shengping Inn, where I have a silent partnership. A report came from there yesterday that four people arrived. In their conversation, I overheard the words ’Inspection Envoy’.”

”Hmm!!”

Lord Yelu’s eyes widened immediately, the Inspection Envoy had come to Mianshui!

Chen Jie said, ”I don’t know for sure, but since there are rumors, it’s probably not unfounded. Besides, if you, Lord, have time, you could go take a look, and perhaps then you’ll know if it’s true.”

Lord Yelu, unable to sit still, got up and said, ”Qimu Ge, don’t bring anyone. Jiu Si, lead the way. Let’s go to Shengping Inn and investigate.”

Chen Jie said, ”Yes.”

”Yes.”

Qimu Ge nodded in agreement too.

Chen Jie, now with his head lowered, knew that the arrival of the Inspection Envoy in Mianshui was bad news, taking him by surprise. However, after thinking it through the previous night, Chen Jie realized that it might actually be a blessing in disguise.

The strong adapt to their environment, even turning unfavorable conditions into advantageous opportunities for themselves.

And Chen Jie had figured out this advantage: the Inspection Envoy was not only pressure on himself but also on Lord Yelu.

He could use this pressure against his opponents. Just relying on the crime of privately manufacturing arms in the North Mountain Mine might have been flawed in trying to take down Nan Batian forcefully, and he still needed to plan and convince Lord Yelu to make a decisive judgment.
