The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Anning actually looks down on those demons who repay kindness by marrying.

Isn’t cultivating well sweet? Or is the life of freedom unpleasant?

Why must one discard their martial arts and descend to the mortal world to repay kindness?

If the person’s character is good, it’s more acceptable; but some demons repay those who are extremely poor in character. They have to endure such a terrible man and his awful family, leading to the abandonment of their cultivation without the possibility of achieving fruition, ruining hundreds or thousands of years of practice in an instant. It’s truly a pity.

Those who cultivate value karma; it’s right to repay the kindness received from others.

But who said that repaying kindness had to involve marriage?

If you’ve received life-saving kindness from someone, just save their life too, or ensure their safety for a lifetime. Why involve yourself?

Ms. Hu thought for a long time before she spoke to Anning again, ”Sister, if my husband saved my life, how do I repay him if I don’t marry him?”

Anning smiled, ”In a lifetime, who doesn’t face a few disasters? Just silently protect and help him in times of trouble. Rescue him once? It may not be enough. Twice? It might still not be clear. Saving him three times should repay the greatest kindness.”

”Is it really this simple?”

Ms. Hu murmured softly, observing Anning: ”How do you know this so clearly, sister?”

Anning smiled, ”My husband is a cultivator. His sect has a thousand years of tradition, with many texts available for reference. I’ve read many books with him, and through reading, I’ve understood.”

”Ah?”

Ms. Hu gasped softly, ”Mr. Xiao is actually a cultivator?”

She felt somewhat afraid and anxious, fearing Xiao Yuan might discover her identity as a fox fairy.

”Yes.”

Anning nodded, ”My husband has cultivated from a young age, he knows a lot and is very skilled. Sister, I’m not boasting. My husband can draw talismans, perform alchemy, and even make rain.”

As Anning spoke more, Ms. Hu became increasingly fearful, ”Can your husband hunt demons?”

”He can.”

Anning replied cheerfully, ”But my husband doesn’t hunt demons indiscriminately. He says that Heaven cherishes life, and demon creatures have a hard time cultivating. As long as they haven’t killed anyone or caused chaos, there’s no need to bother.”

With Anning’s words, Ms. Hu felt somewhat relieved.

She thought, she hadn’t killed anyone, so Mr. Xiao likely wouldn’t trouble her.

Talking and laughing, the two arrived at the Silver Tower.

Anning and Ms. Hu walked in together. Ms. Hu bought a silver hairpin of poor design and slightly old-fashioned, but made of pure silver.

Anning chose a set of hair ornaments, including a hairpin, earrings, and bracelets.

After making their selections, Anning and Ms. Hu took a carriage back.

Returning home, Ms. Hu gave the silver hairpin to Mrs. Sun, whispering as she handed it over, ”Mother, a cousin of mine is getting married; I need to return to my home tomorrow.”

Mrs. Sun was somewhat unwilling, but having just received Ms. Hu’s silver hairpin, she couldn’t say anything harsh: ”Come back quickly; if you don’t do the chores at home, should I do them? Also, make sure you clean the house and prepare my meals before you leave tomorrow.”

”Yes.”

Ms. Hu bowed gracefully.

The next morning, Ms. Hu woke early, tidied the house, and prepared breakfast for Mrs. Sun and Sun Ling before leaving.

Ms. Hu took a small bundle and departed from the Sun Family.

After leaving the city, she used a spell and quickly arrived at a deep mountain not far from Yang City.

Entering the mountain, Ms. Hu passed through a barrier and saw many little fox fairies.

”Sister returned.”

”Auntie returned.”

The little fox fairies were delighted to see Ms. Hu, greeting her warmly.

Ms. Hu took out some snacks she bought in Yang City and distributed them among the kids.

”Are the elders around? I wish to see them.”

”They’re here, they’re here. Thirteen has taken a fancy to a scholar and insists on marrying him. The elders are all trying to persuade her.”

One little fox fairy worriedly told Ms. Hu about the situation, ”Sister, the scholar Thirteen has fancied doesn’t look as good as Wulang and doesn’t have any spells. He doesn’t seem like a good person; why does Thirteen fancy him?”

Ms. Hu chuckled, ”Who knows? I’ll ask the elders.”

She said this with a smile, arriving at the central area of the group.

There was a cave there, where the elders lived.

Ms. Hu entered the cave and familiarly found the council chamber.

Upon entering, she saw the three elders of the group persuading Thirteen.

”Elders.”

Ms. Hu gently spoke, ”Thirteen is here too.”

The four turned their heads and saw Ms. Hu. The Great Elder smiled and waved her over, ”Third Lady is back, come sit quickly.”

Ms. Hu smiled and sat down.

Thirteen gave Ms. Hu an awkward smile, ”Third sister.”

Ms. Hu held Thirteen’s hand, ”It’s been two years; I didn’t expect the younger sister to have grown so well, becoming even more handsome.”

Thirteen lowered her head, a shallow smile on her face.

”What’s the use in growing well? She has good roots, without any karmic ties, making her a good seedling for cultivation. But she went down the mountain once and insists on marrying upon return. What can you say about this...”

The Second Elder expressed concern over the matter.

The Third Elder asked Ms. Hu, ”Why did you come back, Third Lady?”

Ms. Hu shared what Anning had told her with the three elders, ”Ms. Luo told me there’s no need to repay kindness in such a way. If you wish to repay, just repay, why sacrifice your whole life?”

This statement surprised the three elders.

Ms. Hu continued, ”Ms. Luo loves reading supernatural tales. She told me she’s most impatient about stories where scholars save demons out of kindness, and the demons repay them with marriage. She said demons don’t repay kindness; they’re seeking revenge.”

”How so?”

Thirteen, intrigued, couldn’t help but ask.

Ms. Hu sighed, ”Ms. Luo said humans and demons are different paths; being together long-term is bad, harmful to both demons and humans. Humans exposed to demon energy slowly deteriorate in health, and in the mortal world, the legacy of bloodlines is paramount. Men marry to have children, to pass on their lineage, but how can a man have children with a demon? Different species cannot produce offspring, and even if they can, it would be unfavored and bring disaster upon them. Just for this reason, a demon marrying shows a wish for the man to end his lineage. What kind of repayment is this? It’s like having abhorred ancestors.”

”Is... this true?”

The three elders were startled by Ms. Hu’s words.

Ms. Hu nodded, ”Ms. Luo’s husband is a cultivator from a thousand-year-old sect. Apparently, they have many records, and Ms. Luo stated she’s never seen a good outcome from demons repaying kindness with marriage to mortals.”

The three elders contemplated the past thousand years, seeing many fox fairies descend to repay kindness without any positive results.

Ms. Hu turned to Thirteen, ”Thirteen, if you truly like that scholar, stay away from him. We foxes have our path; humans have theirs. We aren’t the same, so how can we be together? If you truly marry him, you’d only ruin his life.”

Thirteen was evidently frightened.

”I... I really like him; I just want to be with him; he’s very pitiful. If I don’t marry him, what will happen to him?”

Ms. Hu patted Thirteen’s hand, ”If you feel he’s currently struggling, find a way to give him some silver taels or let him earn a small fortune to improve his household. With money, he can marry a wife and have children, living a stable life.”

Thirteen remained silent.

Ms. Hu looked at the elders, ”The more I think, the more sense Ms. Luo’s words make. I’ve come back to ask the elders, is there any necessity for me to continue staying at the Sun Family?”
