The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Chapter 425: Chapter 418: I’m the Vicious Eldest Aunt (Part 5)

Mrs. Li finished cooking, and Mrs. Feng helped bring it in.

The Xu Family had quite a few members, so they usually ate at two tables.

Anning assisted the Old Madam to sit at the table where the women were seated, and glanced at the dishes on the table. Mrs. Li got up a bit late today and the meal she prepared was somewhat casually done.

Each table had a large pot of porridge, along with some bean flour pancakes and two plates of pickles.

Anning pursed her lips, then stepped forward to serve the Old Madam some food.

Only after the Old Madam had food in her bowl did the others dare to serve themselves.

Anning filled half a bowl of porridge for Ying and gave her half a pancake, urging her to eat quickly.

She herself ate a pancake with pickles and drank a few sips of porridge.

The Old Madam did not speak during the meal, but after eating, she said, ”Third’s wife, who are you trying to fool with today’s meal? Do you think my temper has become too overbearing?”

Her words made Mrs. Li’s face turn red with embarrassment, and she bowed her head, too ashamed to speak.

The Old Madam slammed her chopsticks onto the table: ”You will cook again tomorrow, and if it’s not done well, you’ll keep cooking until you get it right.”

Mrs. Li didn’t dare to retort and glanced at Xu Zhiqin.

Xu Zhiqin was eating and completely missed the pleading look from Mrs. Li.

Mrs. Li felt some anger inside, but she had no choice but to get up and clean up the dishes.

Anning did not help Mrs. Li; instead, it was Mrs. Feng who appeared diligent, helping Mrs. Li clean up the dishes and whispering in the kitchen, ”Don’t be mad at mom, she might have spoken without thinking, only your elder sister-in-law... I don’t know what your elder sister-in-law and mom were talking about while you were cooking.”

Mrs. Li frowned.

She felt this may have been instigated by Anning and started to feel some anger towards Anning.

Anning ignored Mrs. Li and Mrs. Feng and took Ying Ge’er and Lan into the room.

Once inside the room, Anning took out two boiled eggs and placed them in the children’s hands, ”Eat quickly, and when you’re done, mom will teach you how to write.”

After all, her original father was a Scholar, so she knew how to write.

But in reality, the original body didn’t learn much, merely recognizing a few characters enough to understand passages.

However, the people of the Xu Family didn’t know this.

They all thought she was educated.

Now that Anning was here, she naturally acted like someone who was educated.

Anning gave her children an extra meal, fed them eggs, and even gave them two pieces of sweet treats.

Meanwhile, in the second branch of the family, Erya, who was lying on the Kang bed and couldn’t get up, was brought a bowl of porridge by Mrs. Feng.

”Erya, you eat first, and later mom will ask Grandma for an egg to nourish your body.”

Erya looked at the rough pottery bowl, then at the somewhat blackened and unappealing porridge, and smelled the indescribable sour burnt scent; she really couldn’t stomach it.

Although she didn’t live that well before her transmigration, she had never compromised on food.

Now, not to mention eggs or meat, she couldn’t even get white flour buns or rice, feeling truly aggrieved.

But at the moment, with her stomach growling from hunger, even if she couldn’t eat it, she had to try.

She gritted her teeth and drank half a bowl of porridge. As her stomach wasn’t that hungry anymore, she refused to eat anything else.

Mrs. Feng could only wipe away her tears as she finished the porridge, then she went to the kitchen to wash the dishes and quietly sought out the Old Madam to ask for an egg to cook for Xu Erya.

When Xu Erya received the egg, she almost cried.

She had never imagined an egg could taste so good.

After Anning and the two children had eaten their fill, she took out some paper and a pen and began to teach them how to write.

After writing for half an hour, Anning put away the materials and let the children go out to play.

She then took a delicate silver bracelet from a box in her room and brought it to the main house.

The Old Madam was picking beans in the room when she saw Anning enter, she put aside the beans, ”Eldest Son’s Wife, what brings you here?”

Anning sat down with a smile, placing the bracelet on the table in front of the Old Madam: ”The other day when I went to the town to sell embroidery, I saw this bracelet and thought it looked nice, so I bought it for you, Mom. Raising all these children hasn’t been easy for you, and now that you’re old, you deserve some happiness. Although I don’t have much worthy to offer, a bracelet I can afford.”

The Old Madam never had a silver bracelet in her life.

Even when she got married, she had no jewelry.

She looked at the silver bracelet with sheer delight.

”Why buy it for me, you should wear it yourself.”

Anning chuckled lightly, ”This is for you, I shouldn’t wear it.”

Without hesitation, she slipped the bracelet onto the Old Madam’s wrist: ”Look, it fits perfectly.”

Indeed, it was perfect. The Old Madam also thought it looked beautiful, as if her own wrist had become more valuable.

Anning, seeing that the Old Madam had accepted the bracelet, spoke softly: ”Mom, when I was in town the other day, I heard something alarming.”

”What is it?”

The Old Madam was admiring the bracelet and without much thought, instinctively asked.

Anning continued: ”There’s been a kidnapper in town, several children have disappeared. I have been very anxious about it, and although we live in a village, we can’t be too careful. Besides, Ying and Lan are growing up quite nicely, what if something happens to them?”

The Old Madam then took the matter seriously, ”Are you telling the truth?”

Anning nodded: ”How could I joke about something like this? I haven’t been able to sleep these past few days, thinking over and over, I’m just not at ease about the two children. Being a widow without a job, if something happens I can only decide what to do by myself, but I don’t have any good ideas, so I had to come and ask you for advice. You are my mother, and their grandmother, who else can I turn to?”

The Old Madam pondered for a moment: ”Well, if you trust me, leave the children here with me, I’ll keep an eye on them while you work, to save you worrying all the time.”

Anning immediately responded with joy: ”I trust you, how could I not trust you to look after the children? You are always so kind, the children love being with you, I’m just afraid that they will like you too much and won’t recognize me as their mother.”

This flattery also made the Old Madam pleased.

”You’re the best, unlike the other two, one foolish, the other clumsy, all scheming without the brains, who wouldn’t know that.”

Anning smiled without commenting on her sisters-in-law’s faults.

The next day, Xu Erya finally got up.

During breakfast, Xu Erya saw that aunt by marriage whom she despised and loathed.

When she saw Anning, Xu Erya paused noticeably.

She inherited some of Xu Erya’s vague memories and didn’t have a profound impression of Anning.

What was distinctly remembered was the descriptions of Anning in the books and the harsh words Anning had said yesterday.

In her heart, a woman who spoke so harshly must also look bitter and ugly.

However, the Anning standing before her was dressed neatly and looked elegant, smiling as she spoke, making her seem a very amiable person.
