Shinrabansho: Myriad Souls

The air shifted as Baku faded into the air.

His exit wasn’t especially dramatic, no flash, no sound, but everyone felt something. One moment he was on stage with them, feeling and looking solid enough, but the next he thinned, the edges of his form blurring, his presence dissolving like fog on glass.

The world started moving and murmurs spread after he vanished, leaving everyone feeling confused and uncertain about what happened, the audience struggling to reconcile what they’d just witnessed before the curtains slammed closed.

Beside me, Aoi shivered.

Her shaking wasn’t subtle, her shoulders drawing inward, her arms tightening against her sides as if the temperature had dropped around only her. Her breathing caught once, then again, shallow and uneven.

I turned to her immediately with alarm and pulled her close, my arms wrapping around her protectively without thinking. She fit against me the way she always did, in a way that no one else could, her forehead laying against my collarbone as she leaned in, her fingers gripping the fabric of my costume in the back through my cape.

“You’re back, my wife. Thank Kami for that. No, thank Baku-san.” I murmured softly into her ear, pressing my cheek firmly against her hair. “Whatever happened… at least you’re still here with me now. Maybe what just happened was what you were afraid of the whole time. Losing yourself to that thing.”

She shook her head against me, small and sharp. “If only that was all there is to it. No,” she said, her voice breaking in a way I’d never heard from her before. She drew back just enough for me to see her face, her eyes glassy and emotional, her lashes wet. “It’s not just that.”

Her breathing trembled, and then the words spilled out from her, unguarded.

“It’s all coming to an end.”

The realization hit her fully then, and she didn’t try to hide any of how she felt.

Tears slipped free, quiet and earnest, completely unlike the controlled composure she usually wore like armor. She covered her face for half a second, then gave up and leaned back into me, crying in small, uneven breaths.

I held her tighter, rocking us just slightly, my hand smoothing over her back.

Riko watched us for a moment, her usual grin subdued. When she spoke, her tone was gentler than usual, but still characteristic of her.

“Plays don’t last forever,” she said. “We’re almost done with it all now. And… yeah, some weird things just happened.” She glanced across the stage, then back at us. “But it’s been a good performance so far. A really good one.”

Megumi approached then, her clipboard tucked under her arm, concern plain on her face even as the stage manager part of her reasserted itself. Her gaze flicked over Aoi first, assessing, then softened.

“Where were you?” she asked, not accusing, very worried. “We were all terrified when you disappeared.”

Aoi wiped at her eyes quickly, nodding, trying to pull herself back together.

Megumi exhaled, then clapped her hands once, brisk and decisive, the sound snapping everyone back into motion.

“All right. Please stay where we can see you from now on,” she said firmly. “And hurry up offstage. The stage waits for no one.”

Aoi didn’t respond, staying in my arms as we stood together, her fingers still threaded into mine, her grip a little tighter than usual, as long as she could.

Megumi smiled softly and turned, already calling cues, already pulling the world back into place. We all shuffled after her and I held Aoi as we walked off and the crew rushed past us to clean up and set up the next scene.

Aoi didn’t join the crew. I held her as long as she wanted it. I would never tease her for being clingy like me, especially after what she had gone through. I couldn’t imagine what it was like to be consumed by that shadow creature.

That little voice inside me screamed in torment in reaction.

The curtains rose slowly, not with the confidence of a fresh beginning but with the careful hesitation of everything waking after a long, unnatural sleep.

Light crept back onto the stage in steps, not fully warm initially, providing just enough illumination to suggest the form and depth of the scene, to let the audience recognize the actors that they had seen previously. The castle interior was exactly as it had been abandoned: bodies locked mid-motion, expressions suspended between intention and consequence, the entire tableau held in a breath that had lasted a century.

Sound returned to the castle the same way.

Not all at once.

A single clock chime rang out, sharp and lonely, echoing faintly through the gym. Then another followed, uneven, as if the mechanism itself were uncertain it was time. Somewhere beyond the walls, a dog barked. A distant voice shouted something indistinct, too late to matter, belonging to a world that had kept going while this one slept.

Onstage, time finally loosened its grip.

The cook’s arm completed its long-delayed arc, her palm smacking the scullion across the back of the head with a hollow crack.

“Take that, you lazy—”

She stopped mid-syllable and her eyes widened as she realized every face in the hall was turned toward her.

“…Why is everyone looking at me?”

The scullion straightened slowly, rubbing her head with exaggerated offense. “I waited a hundred years for that?!”

Laughter broke loose, it sounded uneven and startled, very human. It rippled through the audience in bursts, people laughing too loudly, too quickly, as if they were trying to reassure themselves that the world had snapped back into place.

The lights fell and the curtains closed.

The curtains opened once more, revealing the tower room once more.

The door to the chamber burst open.

A guard dashed inside, her spear raised. “They are inside!” She yelled, leveling her spear at Maleficent, standing imperiously, saying nothing.

“Step aside!” the Queen commanded as she rushed past the guard, breathless, her hair had fallen loose from its careful order, her gaze already searching.

“Aurora!”

She stopped short.

Aurora was standing, alive and awake.

And she was holding hands with someone the Queen had never seen before.

The King followed a step behind her, her astonishment hardening almost immediately into a sharper and more cautious face. Her eyes flicked from her daughter’s face to the stranger at her side.

“Who are you?”

Filia straightened, subtly shifting her stance so that she remained between Aurora and the monarchs deliberately, but not defiantly. Her grip on Aurora’s hand did not loosen.

“Prince Filia.”

The word she had used landed with meaning.

“A prince?” the King repeated, disbelief edging his tone.

“A title. A duty,” Filia replied evenly. “I need no permission to claim what is mine.”

A moment passed, tight and uncomfortable, gratitude and authority colliding without resolving their conflict.

The Queen’s gaze moved between them, then settled on Aurora’s face. Understanding reached her before relief did.

“She woke for you,” the Queen said softly.

The King’s jaw tightened. “She woke because the spell ended.”

Aurora inhaled, steadying herself. When she spoke, her voice was quiet, but it did not waver.

“I woke because she chose me.”

The words struck harder than any curse.

The King stiffened, pride flaring hot and reflexive. “You’re but fifteen.”

Aurora’s fingers tightened around Filia’s. “We slept through a hundred years,” she said, lifting her chin. “Don’t tell me what I am as though you own me.”

The Queen exhaled, the sound trembling with a thousand emotions she had not yet sorted, relief tangling with fear, love brushing up against the knowledge that something had irreversibly changed.

“Let her breathe,” the Queen said. “It is time.”

Filia’s hand found Aurora’s again, not possessively, not just for the sake of their performance, a touch shared.

Above them all, unseen, Baku floated near the rafters, one hand resting against his chest as if to steady something that still felt out of alignment. Below him, the audience murmured, their voices overlapping in confused fragments.

“Did you see that thing—”

“Falling from the ceiling—”

“Where did it go?”

“I swear it grabbed the prince—”

“No, it must’ve been part of the show—”

The curtains had risen again.

The stage was intact.

But the creature was gone.

Baku closed his eyes for a brief moment, breathing through the echo of what had nearly gone wrong. When he opened them again, he looked down at the living, imperfect scene unfolding below and willed his nerves into stillness.

The play went on.

And beneath the applause, beneath the laughter and whispered confusion, the dream still carried a fracture no one else could yet see.

Maleficent did not rush.

She appeared at the edge of the stage as if she had always been there, half-claimed by shadow, her presence cooling the air without a sound cue to announce it. The audience felt her before they fully registered her presence, an unease settling into the room, the sense that the story had not closed its teeth yet.

Her gaze lingered on Aurora and Filia, their hands still joined.

“Love invites ruin,” Maleficent said, her voice calm, unraised, carrying effortlessly across the space.

Aurora did not step back.

She lifted her chin and met Maleficent’s eyes directly, the fear still there… but no longer ruling her. “Then ruin us,” she said. “We’re awake.”

A ripple moved through the audience. No one clapped yet. It was very quiet… their attention sharpening on the stage.

Maleficent’s lips curved into a thin, knowing smile. “You think waking is your victory.”

Filia shifted her stance, standing more firmly at Aurora’s side. Her voice was steady when she answered. “It’s a step forward. It is our choice.”

Maleficent regarded her then, her eyes narrowing slightly, not in anger, but in appraisal. “Choice,” she replied, “is as a candle in the wind.”

Filia did not hesitate. “Then we will shield it with our hands.”

For a moment, Maleficent said nothing.

She studied them, really studied them, as if weighing something unseen. The pause stretched just long enough to feel intentional, to suggest that this ending had not unfolded the way she had expected… or perhaps that she had expected it all along.

At last, she turned away.

The movement was dismissive on the surface, almost bored, but there was a feeling of holding back in it, a decision not to intervene further. Her cloak shifted as she walked, her shadow peeling off her form as she passed beyond the light.

She did not look back.

Her absence lingered longer than her presence.

Onstage, Aurora’s grip tightened around Filia’s hand, not because of fear, but through certainty. They remained standing together as the moment resolved, the weight of the exchange pressing into the silence before the story dared to move again.

The lights dimmed and the curtains gently slid closed.

The hedge that had once strangled the castle was now drawn back in sections, the green cloth slipping away to reveal its stonework and the open space behind it. The briars loosened their hold, not vanishing entirely, but retreating enough to show where the castle had endured beneath them. The light warmed by a single degree.

Subtle, restrained, refusing the lie of a perfect dawn.

The Herald stepped forward, her staff banging on the stage, her voice steady enough to rivet everyone’s attention on her.

“The castle wakes,” she declared. “The kingdom wakes.”

A murmur moved through the gathered villagers. Relief threaded through it, but it tangled with disbelief, grief, and an old anger that had found no relief.

One villager stepped out from the crowd. It was the same woman who had spoken earlier, her posture straighter now, though her eyes still carried the memory of loss.

“Do the dead princes wake too?”

The question was not cruel. It was honest.

Silence answered first.

Then the King spoke. When she did, her voice carried no ceremony, no authority… only sincerity.

“No.”

The Queen exhaled beside her, her fingers tightening briefly at her side before she lifted her chin and continued, “But we can stop adding bodies to the hedge.”

That landed on the crowd differently, not as triumph, but as responsibility finally acknowledged.

Aurora stepped forward then, no longer shielded or threatened by thrones, prophecy, or eternal sleep. She faced the crowd directly, her shoulders squaring, her voice clear and unembellished.

“I am not a story for children,” she said. “I am a person who must live after the ravage of a curse.”

She paused, not for effect, but because the truth weighed on her.

“This is not an ending,” Aurora continued. “Yet there is love. And there is life.”

Her gaze shifted, not searching, not uncertain. She looked at Filia and extended her hand with a certain gentle certainty.

Filia took it immediately.

She lifted Aurora’s hand and pressed a reverent kiss to it, a gesture visible even from the far edges of the gym. When she spoke, her voice carried the weight of a vow rather than a flourish.

“And I will be with her,” Filia said. “We will be wed.”

There was no gasp from the court this time. No scandalized hush. Only the stillness that followed a truth spoken plainly.

Filia drew Aurora close, her arms settling around her with unmistakable ardor.

Their faces hovered near one another, their breath shared, not as a spectacle but as a commitment made openly. They remained that way, unflinching.

The curtains began to close around them.

The light faded, not into darkness, but into repose.

The applause washed over us like a warm tide.

It filled the gym from wall to wall, echoing off the rafters, rolling forward in seemingly unending waves. People were on their feet now. Parents, students, other festival-goers who’d wandered in out of curiosity and stayed because something about the play had caught hold of them. Even the stagehands bowed from the wings, ducking their heads awkwardly.

I bowed with the rest of the cast in the center of the stage, my heart still thudding in my chest, filled with relief.

We did it!

I stole a glance sideways at Aoi-chan with the rest of the stage crew. She was there, really there bowing with everyone else, but her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. Her shoulders were tense, her posture too forced, like she was still braced for something to come down from above again.

I felt a rush of tenderness so sharp it almost hurt.

Before she could retreat into herself, I ran over to her and caught her wrist, and yanked her back with me, pulling her fully into the front line with us. She startled, then laughed softly as we bowed together, side by side.

I leaned in just enough for her to hear me over the applause. “You’re here with me,” I murmured. “That’s what matters. Don’t worry.”

She nodded, squeezing my hand once.

As we straightened, the clapping surged again, louder somehow. It was almost as though the gymnasium itself was trying to tell us we’d done a good job.

It was over. We could finally breathe now.

I let myself believe that.

I’m glad that it’s all over and we can go back to living normally, I thought, my chest finally loosening. Now we can enjoy the festival. The nightmare is gone.

No more eyes on us anymore.

I smiled, without forcing it.

The locker room smelled like sweat, fabric, and that faint, comforting trace of stage makeup that never quite washes out of the air.

Costumes came off slowly, carefully, the way you treat something important even after its job is done. Voices filled the air around us. Relieved, tired and excited. It was the low hum of people coming back to themselves and relaxing.

Aoi-chan stayed close to me the entire time, exactly where I wanted her.

She wasn’t hovering exactly, but she was near enough that I could feel her presence even when I wasn’t looking. She lingered by my locker, leaning against it while I unfastened my costume, her arms folded loosely, her gaze flicking toward me more often than she probably realized.

It was a little unlike her to be so dependent on others.

I noticed it, but I didn’t comment. It worried me, but also made me feel intensely protective of her.

None of us talked about what had happened, not directly. There was an unspoken agreement in the room, as if naming that creature might tear the lid off something that everyone preferred to forget. Instead, we stayed together. The four of us, moving in the same small orbit, changing our clothes, brushing hair back into place, using the motions to relax and cool off and there wasn’t any flirting this time.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the folded yukata Mom had packed for me and lifted out Aoi-chan’s as well, the fabric was cool and reassuring beneath my fingers.

“Ahh, finally,” Riko said, stretching as she slipped out of her costume. “I’m really starving. I swear I can smell yakisoba all the way from inside here.”

Yuna laughed softly as she gathered her things, the tension finally easing out of her shoulders. “We should get some drinks first. Everyone’s bound to be dehydrated after a performance like that.”

“That was amazing,” I said, letting the praise land where it belonged as I turned fully toward Yuna. My voice felt lighter now that the stage was behind us. “You were incredible out there, Yuna-chan.”

Riko nodded emphatically, almost bouncing in place. “Seriously. You put us all to shame, Yuna-chan.”

Yuna flushed just a little, her smile turning shy at the edges. “Thank you. That kiss onstage was extremely convincing, perhaps a bit too much so,” she said, shooting Riko a look that was equal parts fond and teasing.

“Not my fault,” Riko replied, grinning wider as she shrugged. “I’ve got to think about the bottom line.”

“Speaking of bottom lines, did you have to shake your butt at me like that while we were getting dressed for our performances?” I said dryly, rolling my eyes.

“It was absolutely essential,” Riko shot back without missing a beat, punctuating it with a wink. “Don’t you agree, Sumire-chan?”

I couldn’t help blushing a little.

Aoi-chan didn’t say anything. She just listened, her gaze unfocused, thoughtful, like she was trying to piece the events of our day together from the edges inward and nothing auxiliary bothered her. She hadn’t seen a fair amount of the play. I knew that, and the knowing sat quietly between us… the reason why.

When I finished changing, I put on my yukata and smoothed the fabric before turning toward her, tying my obi in place.

“Ready?” I asked, keeping my voice gentle.

She looked up at me, blinking, meeting my eyes, and nodded.

“Yeah,” she said softly. “I am.”

I hesitated a moment, then asked, “Do you want some help putting on your yukata, my love?”

Her cheeks colored immediately, but she smiled and nodded again, smaller this time.

I stepped in close and began helping her change, my movements unrushed. I slipped my hands around her waist to guide the fabric into place, letting them linger there just a little longer than necessary, not because I was trying to take things further than was proper, but because holding her felt extremely important right then.

When I stood behind her to tie her obi for her, I pressed my chest against her back, my arms wrapping around her fully. She leaned into me without hesitation, lovingly. I tightened the knot carefully, secure and firm. And then I stayed there, holding her a moment longer, my chin resting on her shoulder, nuzzling at her neck and ear.

“I love you,” I murmured softly.

She didn’t answer right away, but her hands came up to rest over mine.
