Shinrabansho: Myriad Souls

The lights dropped, then rose again in a cooler wash, and Baku leaned forward without quite realizing that he had.

The hedge dominated the stage now. The green cloth was pulled tight and was studded with crude briars, layered thick enough to suggest it was dense, alive and waiting for the next challenger, whose life it would inevitably claim. It was a simple and effective mechanism, the kind of staging that relied on the audience doing the rest of the work.

Sumire, playing Prince Filia, entered cautiously, her weapon held low, her posture alert but careful.

“So this is where so many died,” she said.

A villager stepped into the edge of the light, her shoulders hunched, her voice rough with age and memory. “They thought courage alone would be enough.”

Baku’s fingers twined together in his lap.

Filia didn’t argue, nor did she posture.

“Courage is never enough,” she replied. “But it is what you spend when you have nothing else.”

A quiet and attentive ripple moved through the audience. Baku felt it pass through him too, that faint internal click when a line landed harder than expected.

That line felt very genuine. Her feelings are very clear to the audience.

The whole audience felt it with him.

“You’ll die the same as the rest if you go,” the villager warned.

Filia didn’t look back. “Then I’ll die reaching the door.”

That was nothing like the timid girl Baku remembered from day one when she’d been pulled along by her companions, from the very moment she’d entered his home with Natalia-sama.

For Natalia-sama’s training to have shaped her into someone like this, so steady, so resolved… was truly remarkable. He had not expected such steel beneath her quiet exterior. Perhaps he had underestimated both the girl and the hand that guided her.

Filia stepped forward without hesitation, as if the choice had already been made long before her words ever left her mouth.

The hedge responded.

The briars softened under her hand, the cloth parting where it had been rigid a moment before. Hidden hands drew blossoms into view, pink against the green, sudden and startling in their gentleness.

Baku’s breath caught.

“It’s opening for her…” the villager whispered, awe threading the fear in her voice.

Filia did not slow as she proceeded. “It’s letting me pass,” she said, her tone steady, almost solemn.

“Why is it you that it chose?”

She paused at the threshold, only for a heartbeat, but long enough that the question lingered in the air. Long enough to honor the flower blossoms that greeted her.

“I do not know.”

Then she stepped forward, and the hedge closed behind her, swallowing her whole.

The lights fell and the curtains closed.

Applause stirred, tentative at first, then steadier. Baku joined in a moment late, his palms meeting with enthusiasm. The play flowed well. Better than well. It had excellent rhythm, such confidence.

The lights rose again.

The sleeping castle revealed itself in tableau, guards frozen mid-lean, a cook caught with her hand raised, a scullion bent under an unseen blow. Their stillness was uncanny in its precision.

Filia walked among them slowly, her footsteps the only sound on the stage.

“A hundred years have passed here,” she said softly, “and the place is still warm.”

Baku tilted his head.

She paused beside the cook, and motioned to slap her, hovering inches from her cheek. For a fleeting moment, humor touched her expression. It wasn’t laughter, recognition that time had stopped for these people.

“The world stopped mid-cruelty,” Filia murmured.

Something in Baku’s chest tightened.

This wasn’t just a fairy tale anymore, not the way it was being told.

Filia moved on, her pace was unhurried, careful, almost regal.

The lights fell and the curtains closed.

Prince Filia reached the tower and placed her hand against the frame, and disappeared into shadow as the lights dimmed once more and the curtains closed.

The audience exhaled as one.

Baku sat back, the fake face he wore still fixed, the applause washing over him. He clapped with everyone else, evenly, politely.

And yet—

That earlier feeling returned to the room. It wasn’t sharp, nor urgent.

Something was just wrong.

As if the play was going perfectly, following its script to the letter, while something just beyond it had slipped out of alignment.

Baku’s gaze drifted, briefly, toward the wings.

Something was still wrong in the fabric of the dream.

The curtains parted and the lights came up, focusing on the same tower room that Aurora lay asleep in on the narrow couch that she had fallen into many scenes past, her hands folded loosely at her waist, her breathing slow and even.

The stillness around her felt preserved, as if the room itself was frozen in time as well.

Prince Filia stepped into the space and stopped short the moment she laid eyes on the fabled princess.

She took a single controlled breath, her facial expression shifting. Her face twitched for a moment, filled with love at first sight. Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes, as though she was beholding beauty beyond comparison.

Her mouth was tight, as though she was struggling to restrain her passion.

“Ah,” Filia said quietly. “The fabled Princess Aurora.”

She took one step forward.

Someone was there with her.

Maleficent now stood between Filia and the couch, unhurried and perfectly placed. She did not block the path with her body alone. The air itself seemed to resist any forward motion.

I wonder how they managed that? A trapdoor hidden in the couch, perhaps?

“Don’t go,” Maleficent said.

Filia’s hand slid to the hilt of her sword. She did not draw it. She took a step forward, resisting at the edge.

“Move.”

Maleficent’s lips curved, faint and knowing. “Still you came.”

“I came to wake her.”

Maleficent’s voice softened, amusement threading through it. “To take her. To claim her. To fix a kingdom’s mistake with your mouth.”

“No.”

“That’s what they all say,” Maleficent replied easily, “before they reach for what is not theirs.”

Filia’s gaze flicked past her, just once, to Aurora’s sleeping form, then back again.

“You’re the one who put her here.”

“I warned them,” Maleficent said, calm as water over stone. “What love does. What hope does. They built a crown out of denial and asked me to bleed it into a cradle.”

Filia’s posture tightened, not in anger, but in cautious understanding.

“You’re one of the rare blood mages.”

Maleficent smiled thinly. “A delightful word. Like a ribbon twined around a knife.”

“They used you.”

“They begged me,” Maleficent said. “They threatened me. They praised me when it worked.”

She took a slow step forward, her shadow stretching across the floor.

“They called my magic sacred when it filled their nurseries. They called it filthy the moment they lost control of the terms.”

Filia’s voice remained steady. “And Aurora paid for that.”

“Aurora was their favorite proof that the system worked,” Maleficent replied. “So I gave them proof that it breaks.”

Filia planted her feet, unyielding.

“Move.”

Maleficent’s eyes gleamed. “Still you came.”

The light snapped out.

The lights came up in the tower chamber.

Aurora slept on the narrow couch, her body still, her breathing even. Downstage, Prince Filia stood between the audience and the sleeping Princess, her sword held in a formal guard. The stance was well rehearsed and felt precise.

The air changed.

There was no sound, it was the atmosphere that the lighting and stage evoked, a sense of pressure, a collective held breath. The light cooled, flattening, as if all warmth had been drained from the room.

Maleficent crossed the stage toward Filia.

She did not rush, one heel settled, then the other, each step deliberate. When she stopped, she looked at Filia, not with anger, not even disdain, but with the calm certainty of someone who had already won.

Filia tightened her grip on her sword. The blade was only a prop, but her hands did not treat it like one.

“Still you come,” Maleficent said softly, her voice carrying without effort. “So small. So earnest.”

She tilted her head, studying Filia as though she were something fragile she might break by accident.

“You were warned,” Maleficent continued. “Every kingdom was warned. Love invites ruin. Hope invites despair.”

Her lips curved, just barely.

“And yet you chose to believe you were exempt.”

Filia swallowed. She held her ground, lifting her blade. Her feet were planted. Her posture was firm.

Maleficent’s gaze flicked to the sword, unimpressed.

“A toy,” she murmured. “Raised by a child who thinks courage is enough.”

She took one slow step closer. The hem of her costume whispered against the floor. She did not need speed. She was making the space shrink with her presence.

“Tell me, Prince,” she said, her voice lowering, almost kind. “When the world burns… what do you intend to save?”

Silence stretched, long enough that the gym felt too large, too empty.

Then Maleficent’s expression cooled completely.

“You cannot stop what has already begun.”

She raised her hand.

That was the cue.

From the wings, the dragon crew surged forward in silence. They did not hide. Their visibility sharpened the effect, like shadows answering a command.

The dragon frame slid into view behind Maleficent. Scales unfurled as students snapped into position with coordinated movements. The neck lifted first, joint by joint, followed by the head. The jaws opened wide.

The construction was light, but the motion carried a true threat. Long control sticks guided the body. They should have been better hidden once fully onstage, but no one cared. It worked.

One crew member thrust her stick forward.

Fabric flames burst out with a soft whumph. The effect wasn’t explosive, but it felt alive. The fire rippled as the wings flexed and the claws scraped against the stage.

Gasps broke out across the gym, even though everyone knew something was going to happen.

Maleficent stepped back at exactly the right moment as the dragon completed its rise. She did not flinch.

She did not need to react to her own power.

Filia raised her sword on cue. Whatever she felt inside, her body did not lie.

Charged, awake, and refusing to shrink away, the dragon loomed close enough to feel real.

For a split second, it was.

Filia smoothed her expression, forcing her focus back into place. Back into the Prince’s face. Back into the fight she was required to believe in.

“Kneel,” Maleficent said quietly, as if offering mercy.

Filia did not move.

“No,” she replied, steady.

Maleficent’s eyes narrowed. Not in anger, rather in appraisal. As if measuring how much breakage would be necessary.

“Then be remembered as one more bone in the hedge.”

Filia shifted her stance, one foot planted, her shoulders squaring. Her blade angled upward, not to threaten, but to declare.

“I didn’t come to be remembered.”

The dragon’s head dipped slightly. The crew held it perfectly, making it move just enough to make it breathe.

Maleficent’s voice softened again, almost affectionate. “Then what did you come for?”

Filia’s gaze flicked once, only once, toward Aurora sleeping behind Maleficent. The audience saw it. It landed as genuine concern, genuine bravery.

“Her.”

Maleficent’s smile returned, thin as a blade.

“Then come.”

She lowered her raised hand slowly, as if loosening a leash.

The dragon held. The flames quieted into a steady, waiting threat.

The stage picture locked. Maleficent was framed by the dragon behind her, Filia standing in front with her sword raised, Aurora sleeping like a promise neither of them would surrender.
