Primordial Slime: I Devour The World

One year had changed everything.

The forest was no longer a place that swallowed the unwary.

It was a territory.

Paths had been carved through the trees by countless paws, bounces, and careful footsteps. Small settlements had spread around the central village in quiet rings, each one shaped by the creatures that lived there. The Wolf Den watched the outer borders. The Rabbit Burrow kept the land fed and healed. The Slime Village remained at the heart of it all, glowing faintly in the morning light from the Dungeon Core buried beneath the stone.

Tanaka sat atop the same smooth stone where the elder had once rested.

The place felt different now.

Not empty.

Full.

Below him, the village was awake long before sunrise.

A line of young slimes was practicing Leap across a row of polished logs.

A pair of wolves patrolled the western path with a young goblin scout between them, the goblin’s feet barely touching the ground as it dashed ahead to check the terrain.

Near the herb garden, three rabbit caretakers were sorting medicinal leaves while a crystal mouse family stacked pale stones into little piles along the shade of a tree.

Even more new faces had arrived over the past months.

Moss Turtles had taken to the pond by the southern edge of the territory and now served as patient carriers of supplies.

A flock of Mana Birds nested high in the upper branches, warning the settlement whenever strange mana drifted too near.

A cluster of Kobolds worked with the goblins on tools, pits, and simple structures.

Nothing here had been conquered in the usual sense.

It had been invited.

The village had grown so naturally that it was difficult to remember when there had only been slimes.

Tanaka watched it all through Mana Sense.

The land felt alive in layers now.

Wolves at the edges.

Rabbits in the middle.

Slimes near the dungeon and training grounds.

The newer races fitting themselves into gaps no one had planned but everyone needed.

He could feel every patrol route.

Every supply movement.

Every resting camp.

Every shift in mana across the territory.

And through Thought Communication, the reports flowed to him in gentle pulses.

North border clear.

Herbs gathered.

Dungeon floor one secured.

Two young slimes finished training early and now refuse to stop bouncing.

Tanaka’s inner expression softened.

That last report is suspiciously specific.

A nervous ripple came back.

Then a burst of indignation from somewhere near the training field.

The little slime was probably involved.

As always.

Tanaka turned his attention inward.

Devourer was active.

Quiet.

Patient.

Working.

The skill had become a constant presence over the past year, analyzing everything that entered his body, everything he absorbed, everything he had taken from the world and turned into part of himself. His human-form analysis had started as a vague outline. A set of shapes. A concept.

Now it was nearly complete.

For a full year he had been circling that final answer.

Not because he lacked the power.

Because the form had to be understood before it could be worn.

The body of a human was strange compared to a slime’s.

Too rigid.

Too narrow.

Too many points where the world expected a different kind of movement.

But Devourer had finally gathered enough data.

A human skeleton.

Muscle structure.

Balance.

Weight distribution.

Surface flesh.

Hands.

Fingers.

A face.

Hair.

Breathing.

The shape of speech.

The way mana moved through a body built for language instead of instinct.

Tanaka had spent nights thinking about it.

About what his old Earth body had looked like.

About the shape of his own face before death.

About the body he remembered from the mirror.

And that was the shape Devourer kept returning to.

Not exact.

But close enough that the memory itself made his chest tighten.

His original self.

The one who had laughed at a beta test screen and died before that world could begin.

That shape had been waiting.

Now it was almost ready.

A shout rose from below.

Not alarm.

Just excitement.

The little slime had bounced directly onto the head of a young goblin and now both of them were rolling in the grass while the nearby rabbits watched with what could only be described as patient resignation.

Tanaka’s attention drifted there for a moment.

The young goblin had joined the village three months ago after stumbling into territory controlled by one of the wolves and realizing the wolves were not going to eat him. Now he worked as a scout and toolmaker, usually with too much enthusiasm and not enough caution.

He and the little slime had become odd friends.

The goblin liked digging.

The little slime liked shiny stones.

The goblin liked shiny stones too, which caused frequent arguments Tanaka never understood fully but could always feel through the emotional pulses they sent through the network.

The little slime was currently demanding a rock back.

The goblin was pretending not to hear.

Tanaka sighed inwardly.

At least they are alive.

The year had not been without danger.

The forest still had its predators.

One of the newly joined kobolds had nearly lost a hand to a territorial beast before the wolves rescued it.

Two rabbit scouts had once been cornered by a pack of wild boars, only to be saved by a pair of slimes who happened to be carrying sharpened crystal stakes.

The dungeon itself had continued to change.

Its mana now fed the territory more steadily than before.

The lower floors had opened, one by one, revealing new training chambers and more dangerous creatures.

Some of the monsters there were now part of the village’s regular trials.

The Crystal Core beneath the dungeon remained stable and silent, but its blessing had altered the land in a dozen subtle ways.

Mana-rich herbs grew faster.

Core recovery had improved for every race.

Young monsters matured quicker.

Even the air felt easier to breathe.

Tanaka had watched all of it happen.

And through all of it, one thought had remained.

He could not stay a slime forever.

Not if he wanted to understand the world beyond the forest.

Not if he wanted to walk among humans one day and see whether they were truly as simple as the hunters had seemed.

Not if he wanted to stand in front of this village and become something more than a voice in the dark.

He needed a human form.

Not as a disguise.

As another tool.

Another step.

Another shape of himself.

...

[ Unique Skill: Devourer

Human Form Analysis Complete.

Transformation Available. ]

He went still.

The message was simple.

Clean.

Final.

His attention sharpened.

The village around him seemed to fade into the background for a moment as his mind measured the implications.

If he transformed now, he would know whether the form was stable.

Whether it could hold mana properly.

Whether the skills taken from the bearded hunter could be used within it.

Whether his own body would recognize the new shape without rejecting it.

He looked down at the village one more time.

The slimes bouncing in the training field.

The wolves watching the border.

The rabbits tending herbs.

The goblin arguing with the little slime over a pebble.

The kobolds repairing a storage shed.

The moss turtles carrying baskets without complaint.

This had become a home.

He had to return to it in a form that could do more than bounce.

Tanaka inhaled the way a slime could inhale, which was not at all like a human but still somehow made sense in his mind.

Then he activated Devourer.

The darkness inside his body spread outward.

His gelatinous form began to compress.

Not painfully.

Deliberately.

Mana rushed through him, wrapping around every part of his body like invisible hands shaping wet clay.

His blue body became thinner.

More compact.

The core at his center split into streams of light and sank deeper.

His outline changed first.

Where there had been a simple rounded shape, two shoulders formed.

Then arms.

Then legs.

The world tilted.

He felt height for the first time in this life.

His sight moved upward.

His perspective shifted.

His body stretched and tightened, bones and muscle growing where fluid had once been.

Fingers emerged.

Five on each hand.

Not one.

Not two.

Five.

He could feel the absurd precision of it.

Joints.

Nails.

Wrists.

Elbows.

Knees.

The body was strange.

Heavier than slime.

Stronger in some ways.

Clumsier in others.

Mana flowed through the shape and settled.

Hair emerged in dark strands.

Not long.

Not short.

Just enough to brush his neck and frame his face.

His chest tightened once as lungs formed.

Air arrived differently.

With pressure.

With depth.

Then his face changed.

The last part.

His shape carried his Earth self almost exactly as he had remembered it.

A young man.

Not tall.

Not broad.

Just lean enough to move quickly, with dark hair and features that pulled sharply from memory.

His own face.

The face he had known before death.

The face of Tanaka Morima.

The transformation completed with a soft pulse of mana.

He stood there in silence.

No longer a slime.

Not yet fully comfortable as a human.

But human.

His balance wobbled.

His knees bent instinctively.

He almost toppled forward before catching himself with one hand against the stone.

That hand.

Five fingers.

Tanaka stared.

He flexed them once.

Then again.

The sensation was unreal.

He looked down at himself.

Bare feet on the stone.

Human legs.

Human arms.

A human body.

He could feel the shape of his own breathing.

The weight of gravity.

The pull of joints.

The strange sensation of having a neck again.

His mind went completely still.

Then, at the edge of the village below, the little slime turned.

It had felt the shift instantly.

Its body froze.

Then it bounced twice in place as if in shock.

The goblin beside it followed its gaze.

The wolves on border patrol lifted their heads.

The rabbits looked up from their herb beds.

One by one, every creature in the village turned toward the stone above the central clearing.

Tanaka slowly raised his head.

The village stared.

He stared back.

Then he gave the smallest, most awkward wave imaginable.

The little slime let out a stunned, almost broken little bounce.

The Alpha Wolf’s ears shot upright.

Somewhere below, someone dropped a basket.

Tanaka opened his mouth.

The air felt different going in.

Different going out.

His throat moved.

His voice came out raw at first, unused and strange, but unmistakably human.

”So this is what it feels like.”

The silence that followed was so complete it seemed to press against the forest.
