The humans did not leave.

Tanaka felt it before he saw it.

Their mana had not withdrawn from the forest edge. It had shifted. Spread. Settled into attack formation.

He stood at the center of the village and watched the border through Mana Sense.

The wolves had already noticed.

The Alpha’s ears flattened.

A low, warning growl rolled through the territory.

The slimes nearest the clearing stopped bouncing.

The rabbits froze with their herb bundles still in their paws.

Tanaka knew that sound.

Not alarm.

Decision.

The humans had chosen force.

He moved toward the clearing.

The little slime bounced after him at once.

Behind it came the veteran slimes, then the wolves, then the rabbits escorting the youngest and weakest toward the safety of the inner cave.

Tanaka looked at the humans one last time.

They stood at the edge of the clearing in a loose line, weapons ready. The bearded hunter remained at the front, while the adventurers fanned out behind him.

No one looked panicked.

That was what made them dangerous.

They had seen the settlement.

They had seen the patrol routes.

They had seen the wolves and rabbits.

And still...

They were advancing.

Tanaka lowered his body and sent a clear pulse through Thought Communication.

Leave.

It was simple.

Even a blunt thought.

The wolves and slimes felt it clearly.

Several rabbits paused as if the meaning reached them only through the tension in the air.

The humans did not react.

Of course they didn’t.

They could not hear him.

Tanaka moved closer anyway.

He raised himself slightly and pointed toward the forest.

Then back toward the humans.

Then, slowly, he lowered his body and spread himself between them and the village.

A warning.

A barrier.

The bearded hunter understood the gesture.

He tightened his grip on his sword.

”We are not here to talk.”

Tanaka blinked.

Not because he understood every word.

Because the tone was enough.

The man had answered with steel.

The youngest hunter looked uneasy, but he still stepped forward with the others.

”They’ve organized themselves,” the bowwoman murmured.

”Then we cut off the head,” the bearded hunter said.

Tanaka felt the little slime beside him tremble.

The village behind him stirred.

Mana shifted.

The wolves bared their teeth.

The rabbits began moving the youngest slimes deeper into the cave.

The humans noticed the motion.

”Front rank,” the bearded hunter ordered. ”Break the line.”

The first adventurer charged.

Tanaka had expected it.

The Alpha vanished from his side.

A split second later, the human’s legs were taken out from beneath him by a burst of speed from the trees.

The adventurer crashed to the ground hard.

At the same instant, two veteran slimes launched themselves from the front line.

Earth Impact!

The combined strike landed on the fallen hunter’s shield arm.

The shield cracked.

The adventurer rolled away, shocked.

”What the hell was that?”

”Ambush!” the bearded hunter barked.

Too late.

Wolves burst from both sides of the clearing.

Not all at once.

In waves.

One group struck from the left, forcing the humans to turn.

Another came from the right, hitting the rear line and breaking their spacing.

The humans reacted quickly, but the forest itself was now part of the trap.

Their boots snagged on roots.

Their vision was blocked by the trees.

Their footing was ruined by the uneven ground.

The wolves knew every line of the territory.

The humans did not.

Tanaka moved in sync with the chaos.

He could not speak to the humans.

He did not need to.

The monsters understood everything through his thoughts.

Shield the rabbits.

Leave the wounded alive.

Do not let them reach the cave.

The little slime darted under a human swing and slammed itself into the attacker’s ankle.

The man lost balance.

A nearby slime immediately followed with Leap, crashing into his chest and forcing him backward into a tree.

The rabbit evacuees disappeared into the cave with the youngest slimes, carrying herbs, healing leaves, and bundles of food as they went.

One rabbit stopped only long enough to drag a fallen crystal shard out of the path of the fight.

Even now, in the middle of battle, it was still thinking about resources.

Tanaka almost laughed.

Almost.

The humans were no longer laughing.

They had seen the first wave.

Now they were seeing the second.

The clearing was not full of wild monsters rushing stupidly forward.

It was organized.

Controlled.

Each movement had purpose.

Each attack had support.

The bearded hunter slashed at a slime that had exposed itself on purpose.

The slime split around the blade and another wolf came in from behind.

The hunter turned just in time to block the wolf’s claws.

Not enough time to see the rabbit that had already guided a second slime into his blind side.

The impact lifted him off his feet.

He skidded across the ground and slammed into a crystal-lined tree.

”What is this?” the youngest adventurer shouted.

”They’re coordinating!”

”No,” the bowwoman snapped, firing arrows toward a wolf advancing on her flank. ”They’re not coordinating.”

She ducked as a slime rammed past her shoulder.

”They’re being commanded.”

Tanaka heard that.

He did not understand the exact words, but the tone told him enough.

Recognition.

Fear.

The adventurers began changing tactics.

They stopped chasing individual monsters and tried to push forward as a unit.

That failed almost immediately.

The Alpha Wolf intercepted the center line.

Three wolves moved with it.

The formation broke.

One adventurer swung a heavy axe wide enough to clear the wolves, but the opening he created was instantly filled by two slimes and a rabbit that used the gap to carry a wounded younger slime to safety.

The man stared.

”Why are the rabbits not panicking?”

”Because they know where to go,” Tanaka thought.

Because they had been living here for months.

Because this was no longer a nest.

It was a home.

The bearded hunter forced his way through the front with a shout.

”Enough! Burn the cave!”

Tanaka’s core flared cold.

No.

He felt the village behind him.

The youngest slimes inside the cave.

The rabbits moving supplies.

The wolves guarding the side paths.

He had found this place in silence.

He would not let humans turn it into ash.

He lunged.

Leap.

Mana Reinforcement.

Earth Impact.

The bearded hunter turned just in time to block the strike with his sword arm.

The impact still drove him back several steps.

His boots dug trenches into the soil.

Tanaka compressed himself again and hit the man from the side before he could recover.

Not to kill.

Only to push him away from the cave.

The leader of the hunters grunted and slashed downward.

Tanaka absorbed part of the mana in the attack, but the blade itself still bit into him and sent a shudder through his body.

He bounced back, reforming instantly.

The little slime used the opening to slam into the hunter’s ankle.

A wolf followed with a bite to the back of his leg.

The man stumbled.

The village line held.

Behind him, the bowwoman shouted, ”This is not a normal monster den!”

”No,” Tanaka thought, watching the battlefield with narrow, focused attention.

It was not.

It was a territory.

Every race was acting as one.

The rabbits ferried the youngest away and returned with bundles of herbs for the wounded.

The wolves attacked from the forest edge and vanished before the humans could counter.

The slimes formed the front shield, taking blows and returning them with relentless, patient force.

And Tanaka...

Tanaka was everywhere.

He intercepted the strongest strikes.

He redirected attacks away from the cave.

He kept the humans from regrouping long enough to press deeper.

The adventurers were good.

Better than the hunters who had first attacked the village.

One used a sweeping spear style that forced the wolves back.

Another cast short bursts of wind that blew slimes off balance.

The bowwoman landed two clean shots into a veteran slime before the little slime knocked her aim aside with a reckless leap.

The bearded hunter looked around, breathing harder now.

He saw the rabbits moving supplies.

He saw the wolves closing escape routes.

He saw the slimes rotating positions like they had drilled the movement a hundred times.

His expression changed slowly.

Realization.

The line between prey and territory had vanished.

This was not a settlement defending itself.

This was an army.
