The contracts we have are the ones the Bloodhounds kept. There are more. Wren knows about all of them. He knows which nobles paid for which crimes. He knows which Crown officials were involved. He is the living archive of the corruption. If he testifies, the entire noble class goes down.’

’So they’re getting him out. Before the tribunal. Before he can be compelled to testify. A Magistrate who flees jurisdiction can’t be forced to speak. If he reaches international waters, he’s beyond Guild reach.’

’But Port Verenis is a Guild port. The Delver’s Consortium has waystation jurisdiction. And the ship waiting for him is flagged through Castellan Logistics, which means it’s subject to Guild maritime inspection.’

’They think they have an exit. They don’t.’

Hendricks turned to Alvian. The three of them sat in the shipping container, monitoring the network. Tobias was at the Guildhall, keeping eyes on the Council session. The chamber was in chaos. The Speaker was trying to maintain order. The Crown-loyal Guildmasters were demanding explanations. The fracturing Guilds were calling for immediate arrest warrants.

”Three waypoints in six hours,” Hendricks said. ”Millsbridge. Easthold. Harrow’s Cross. The trajectory is clear. Port Verenis. The Castellan shipping operation.”

’Port Verenis. Three hundred kilometers east of Harrow’s Cross. Two days by carriage over the trade roads. Wren left Harrow’s Cross at noon yesterday. He’ll reach Port Verenis by tomorrow night, assuming he doesn’t push the horses. With fresh relays from the Castellans, he might be there by tomorrow morning.’

’Tomorrow morning. Less than twenty-four hours to intercept him before he boards a ship and disappears across the sea.’

”The Consortium has teams at every waystation between Harrow’s Cross and the coast,” Serah said, her pad showing the network map. ”But they’re tracking teams, not interception teams. They can confirm where he is. They can’t stop him.”

”We don’t need to stop him at the waystations.” Alvian pulled up the map on his own interface. ”We need to stop him at the port. Before he boards the ship.”

”The Consortium doesn’t have authority at Port Verenis,” Hendricks said. ”It’s Crown-administered. The port authority answers to the Crown.”

’Wrong. The port authority at Verenis is Consortium-affiliated through the back door. The harbor master is a retired delver named Petra Sulk. She ran with Tobias’s old team before the Rift collapse. She’s been running the port for twelve years. The Crown thinks she’s loyal to them. She’s loyal to the Consortium.’

’The Consortium doesn’t have formal jurisdiction at Verenis. But the Consortium has people. And people are what matters.’

”Contact Petra Sulk,” Alvian said. ”Tell her a Castellan-flagged ship is preparing to depart with a fugitive from Guild justice onboard. Tell her the Delver’s Consortium is requesting cooperative inspection of the vessel under Article 14 of the Maritime Safety Code.”

Hendricks raised an eyebrow. ”Article 14?”

”Vessels suspected of carrying fugitives from Guild tribunals are subject to inspection at any Guild-affiliated port. Verenis is Guild-affiliated through the Consortium’s waystation agreements. The Castellans will argue that the article doesn’t apply because no formal tribunal has been convened. Sulk will argue that the article applies because a tribunal has been scheduled and the suspected fugitive was summoned to appear.”

”And if the Castellans refuse inspection?”

’Then they’re obstructing a Guild investigation. Which is itself a violation. Which means their ship doesn’t sail. Which means Wren is stuck at the port until the Crown sends someone to claim him. Which the Crown won’t do, because the Crown is trying to distance itself from the scandal.’

”Then they’re obstructing. Which is a separate charge. Which means their ship doesn’t sail. Which means Wren is stuck at the port until the Crown sends someone to claim him. Which the Crown won’t do, because the Crown is trying to distance itself from the scandal.”

Hendricks transmitted the request through the communication network. The message pulsed out through the mesh, relayed by crystal to crystal, until it reached Petra Sulk at Port Verenis.

The response came back in eleven minutes. Sulk confirmed. A Castellan-flagged merchant vessel had been sitting at anchor for three days, waiting for a passenger who hadn’t arrived yet. The ship’s captain had filed a flight plan for the southern coast, departure pending. Sulk had been suspicious but had no grounds to act.

Now she had grounds.

”Delver team en route,” Sulk’s message read. ”Three Consortium delvers, Level 50+. They’ll reach the port by midnight tonight. Wren won’t arrive until tomorrow morning. We’ll be ready.”

’Done. The trap is set. Wren thinks he’s running toward freedom. He’s running toward a port where the harbor master is Consortium-affiliated, the inspection authority is Guild-recognized, and three Level 50+ delvers are waiting to take him into custody the moment his carriage rolls through the gates.’

’He’ll surrender. He has no choice. Resistance would mean fighting a Guild operation on Guild-affiliated territory. That turns a corruption scandal into a Guild-Crown incident. The Castellans won’t risk it. They’ll abandon him at the port gates, claim they were providing routine transport and had no knowledge of his fugitive status, and let the Guilds take custody.’

’Everyone abandons Wren. Wren goes down alone. The Crown keeps its distance. The Castellans keep their shipping company. The corruption gets pinned on one man who was already going to be pinned anyway.’

’But. Wren knows things. Wren knows all the things. And once he’s in Guild custody, the Guilds will offer him cooperation. Testify against the Castellans. Testify against the Crown officials who authorized the contracts. Testify against everyone. Get leniency. Walk away with twenty years of supervised service instead of life imprisonment.’

’That’s the play. Wren becomes the witness. The corruption scandal doesn’t end with him. It cascades through the noble families, through the Judicial Office, through everyone who used the Magistrate system as a weapon.’

’And the Crown, which thought it was sacrificing one man to save itself, watches the sacrifice turn into a cascade that takes everything down.’

Hendricks closed the network connection. ”Sulk’s got it handled. We wait.”

”Let the network do its work,” Alvian said. ”The Crown’s enforcement apparatus is gutted. They can’t intercept Wren themselves even if they wanted to. The Castellans think they have an exit. Petra Sulk thinks she has jurisdiction. We know we have a trap.”

’And tomorrow morning, the trap closes.’

---

The capture came at 7:43 AM the next morning.

Wren’s Castellan carriage rolled through Port Verenis’s gates just after dawn. The harbor master’s office flagged the carriage for inspection. The Castellan driver protested, demanded to speak to the Crown’s port authority, was informed that the Crown’s port authority had no jurisdiction over Guild maritime matters, and was further informed that any attempt to bypass the inspection would result in the carriage being impounded and the driver arrested.

The driver, realizing the situation, abandoned the carriage at the port gates and disappeared into the city. The Castellans had washed their hands of Wren. Just as predicted.

Wren emerged from the carriage alone. He was thinner than his official portraits. Three days of flight had aged him visibly. His formal robes were crumpled. His face was grey. He looked like a man who hadn’t slept, hadn’t eaten properly, had spent seventy-two hours convinced he was about to escape and then discovered he wasn’t.

Three Consortium delvers met him at the harbor master’s office. Level 50+ combatants. Professional. Polite. Not a single threat issued. They simply stood between Wren and the ship, and waited.

Wren stood for a long moment. Looking at the ship. Looking at the delvers. Looking at the harbor. Looking at the open sea beyond, where he’d thought he was going to disappear.

Then he raised his hands, palms out, and walked toward the delvers.

”I surrender,” he said. His voice was flat. ”I’ll cooperate. Please. Just... I’ll cooperate.”

[DING!]

[Tracking operation: SUCCESS]

[Target: Chief Magistrate Aldric Wren]

[Status: CAPTURED, COOPERATING]

[Location: Port Verenis, Guild Custody]

[Transport: En route to capital under Consortium escort]

[Flight attempt documented as additional evidence of consciousness of guilt]

[Assessment: The Crown’s political position has further deteriorated]

[The Host’s strategic position has further strengthened]

[The Host anticipated this development]

The crystal pulsed in Tobias’s hut. Hendricks closed his eye. Alvian stood at the window, looking out at the thirteenth level’s perpetual twilight.

’Wren captured. Thorne in protective custody. The evidence presented publicly. The Council session scheduled. The political trap fully sprung.’

’The Crown wanted a scapegoat. They got one. Wren. But the scapegoat is now in Guild custody, and the Guilds will offer him cooperation, and cooperation means testimony, and testimony means the corruption doesn’t end with Wren.’

’The Crown thought they were sacrificing one man to save the system. They’ve actually handed us the witness we need to take the system apart.’

’Next: the tribunal. Formal charges. Formal testimony. Formal verdicts. And then the Crown has to decide whether to accept the verdicts or openly defy Guild authority.’

’Either way, they lose.’

Outside, in the streets of the thirteenth level, people moved through their daily lives. None of them knew that a Chief Magistrate had just been captured at a port three hundred kilometers away. None of them knew that the Crown’s judicial apparatus was about to be put on trial. None of them knew that the political landscape they lived in was shifting under their feet.
