”Let them try. The public session is broadcast live. If the Crown’s lawyers stand up and argue that evidence of corruption should be excluded because it was obtained while defending against the corruption, that argument itself becomes the story.”

Thorn’s laugh was short and sharp. ”You’re learning how this works.”

”I’m learning that politics is just combat with better witnesses.”

”Close enough. Get the package here. I’ll handle the rest.”

The crystal went quiet.

Alvian looked at the three binders on the table. Serah looked at them. Tobias looked at them. Three people, three different skill sets, three weeks of preparation, all of it converging on three leather folders that were about to blow a hole in the Crown’s legitimacy the size of a Guildhall.

’Tomorrow night, the package goes to Thorn. Three days later, the public session. Every Guildmaster. Every extranet feed. Every citizen who ever wondered whether the system was rigged against them.’

’They’re about to find out it was. And they’re about to find out who rigged it.’

Tobias picked up the binders. Held them against his chest like something precious. His mechanical arm hummed. The crawler-crystal joints resonated with his tension.

”I’ll handle the delivery,” he said. ”Midnight. The tunnel. Thorn’s people.”

”Be careful.”

”I’m always careful. That’s why I’m still here.” He paused at the door. ”You know what this means, right? Once this goes public, the Crown can’t ignore us anymore. They’ll have to respond. And the response won’t be negotiation.”

’I know. The Crown will escalate. They’ve been holding back because they thought they could manage the political damage. Once the evidence goes public, they’ll realize they can’t. Then they’ll have to choose. Capitulate or crack down.’

’And crack down is what desperate regimes do when they’re losing.’

”I know,” Alvian said. ”That’s why the communication network went first. That’s why the Guilds are aligned. That’s why the healing array is self-sustaining. Every piece in position before the evidence drops. By the time the Crown realizes what’s happening, they won’t have moves left.”

Tobias nodded. Left. The door closed behind him.

Alvian stood in the empty hut. The table was bare now, the evidence gone. The candle flickered. Outside, the thirteenth level continued its perpetual twilight, people moving through streets that didn’t know they were about to become the center of a political earthquake.

The Guildhall’s great chamber hadn’t hosted a full Council session in eleven years.

Alvian watched through a communication crystal patched into the Guildhall’s own extranet feed. The image was crisp. Seven raised platforms arranged in a circle around a central speaking floor. The dome above them arched three stories high, painted with murals of the kingdom’s founding. The galleries were packed. Citizens, journalists, representatives of noble families who’d heard rumors of what was coming.

Hendricks Cole sat in a corner of Tobias’s hut, his cybernetic eye tracking the feed’s reception metrics. Serah had her circuitry pad open, recording the session for later analysis. Tobias had gone to the Guildhall itself, claiming a seat in the public gallery through his Consortium credentials.

Three days of preparation. Three days of waiting. Three days since the evidence package left this hut at midnight, carried through the Academy sub-basement tunnel by Consortium delvers who didn’t know what they were carrying.

Today, the package opened.

Elara Thorn took the speaking floor at 9:04 AM.

She wore her formal delver’s leathers, scarred from thirty years of Warrens work. Her face was expressionless. Her posture was military. She carried the three leather binders under her arm and set them on the central podium without ceremony.

”The Delver’s Consortium presents evidence of systematic corruption within the Crown’s Judicial Office.”

Her voice carried across the chamber without amplification. The acoustics of the dome did the work.

”This evidence consists of thirty-seven notarized contracts for illegal activities, including assassination, intimidation, and evidence suppression. Each contract bears the notary seal of Guild Magistrate Hollis Thorne. Each contract was authorized by Chief Magistrate Aldric Wren.”

She opened the first binder. The holographic display above the podium projected the document’s contents across the chamber. The Bloodhound contract. Duke Gaius Magnus’s signature. The fifty thousand credit fee. Thorne’s notary seal. Wren’s authorizing stamp.

”Contract one. Magnus family. Target: Alvian Vance, E-Rank student at Ironclad Academy. Authorization: assassination. Fee: fifty thousand credits. Notary: Magistrate Thorne. Authorizing superior: Chief Magistrate Wren. Date: eleven weeks ago.”

’She’s starting with my contract. The one that started everything. Smart. Puts a face to the corruption. Lets every viewer see that the E-Rank kid who healed two hundred people was the one the Crown tried to have killed.’

She opened the second binder. Contract two. The Varen family. Dorin Alcott, the merchant who’d been developing a competing trade route. Twenty thousand credits. Intimidation sufficient to dissuade further commercial activity.

She moved through the contracts one by one. Thirty-seven presentations. Each one projected on the holographic display. Each one a separate crime. Each one bearing the same notary seal and the same authorizing stamp.

The Crown-loyal Guildmasters reacted with varying degrees of discomfort.

Guildmaster Seron Holt of the Merchant’s Compact shifted in his seat every time a contract bearing his family’s name appeared. Which was seven times. He hadn’t known about the contracts, or so his expression suggested. Either he was genuinely surprised or he was performing surprise for the cameras.

’The Holt family. Seven intimidation contracts against commercial competitors. Their entire competitive advantage for the last six years was purchased violence. Seron Holt is either the most innocent man in the chamber or the best actor.’

Master Vex of the Artificer’s Circle watched the presentations with professional interest. His Guild had already withdrawn cooperation with the Crown. He was here as an observer, not a participant. But his circuitry-trained eye was tracking every Guildmaster’s reaction, cataloging who flinched and when.

Elder Healer Ashby looked like he wanted to be sick. The Healer’s Assembly had referred patients to the Magistrate’s office for injury compensation claims. Some of those patients were the targets of the very contracts being displayed.

The presentations took two hours and forty minutes.

Thorn closed the third binder. ”The Delver’s Consortium rests its presentation. The evidence is now before the Council. We request a formal tribunal with full prosecution authority.”

The Council Speaker, a neutral position held by the Librarian of the Crown Archives, opened the floor for discussion.

The fracturing Guilds demanded immediate tribunal proceedings. The Delver’s Consortium, the Artificer’s Circle, and the Healer’s Assembly all spoke in support. Their statements were brief. They’d already said what needed saying through their alignment with the case.

The Crown-loyal Guilds requested time to verify the evidence. Their statements were longer, more qualified, full of procedural concerns. They wanted independent authentication of the notary seals. They wanted chain of custody documentation. They wanted everything that desperate people want when they’re trying to delay the inevitable.

’Chain of custody. They’re going to argue the evidence was obtained illegally. I knew they would. Thorn knew they would. The procedural challenge is the Crown’s only defense. Let them make it. Then let Thorne speak.’

At 12:17 PM, Guild Magistrate Hollis Thorne requested speaking time.

The Council granted it.

Thorne rose from the magistrates’ section. His formal robes were immaculate. His face was carefully neutral. But Alvian was watching through the crystal feed, could see the tension in his shoulders. The careful way he walked. The practiced control of his breathing.

He’d been preparing for this. For weeks. Since the Bloodhound engagement, when his notary seal had first appeared on a contract recovered from a battlefield. He’d known this day would come. He’d spent the time getting his story straight.

’Magistrate Thorne. The man who sold the authority of his office for eight percent of every contract he stamped. Now he’s about to perform the political equivalent of throwing himself on a grenade. Or throwing someone else on it.’

Thorne straightened his robes. Adjusted the chain of office around his neck. Looked up at the seven Guildmasters on their platforms.

”I acknowledge the authenticity of the notary seals presented in this evidence.”

The chamber went silent. Even the journalists stopped murmuring. Even the cameras stopped clicking.

”I further acknowledge that the contracts bear my signature and my seal. The Delver’s Consortium’s documentation is accurate. I notarized these contracts.”

Serah’s intake of breath was audible in the hut. ”He’s confessing.” Her voice was a whisper. ”Live. On camera. To fourteen million people.”

”He’s not confessing,” Alvian said. ”He’s setting up.”

Thorne continued. ”However. I did not act unilaterally. I acted within the authority granted to me by the Crown’s Judicial Office. All contracts I notarized were approved by my superior, Chief Magistrate Aldric Wren. Every signature. Every seal. Every authorization. I have documentation.”
